Orkney’s bustling capital, Kirkwall is an ancient Norse town dating back to the 11th century. Together with its narrow main streets and mysterious pathways, Kirkwall is home to the magnificent St Magnus Cathedral. Today, its thriving centre boasts restaurants, museums, pubs and shops, perfect for stocking up on supplies for your stay or enjoying a delicious meal out when you would rather not cook. Explore the island on foot, two wheels or from the water, try your hand at catching a brown trout, or spend an afternoon on the green at one of the nearby golf courses. Take in some local history with a visit to the Earl’s and Bishop’s Palaces (0.5 miles) or Orkney Museum (0.5 miles), before sampling a local tipple at the Highland Park Distillery (1.5 miles). Wildlife lovers should keep a look out for inquisitive seals and even dolphins and orcas, pods of which can sometimes be spotted east of the island. Alternatively, head to Hobbister Nature Reserve (5.5 miles) to see its resident hen harriers, short-eared owls and red-throated divers as you explore the saltmarsh, moorland and sandflats. Once you have finished touring this magnificent island, take on the rest of the Orkney archipelago with a visit to Westray (27 miles) or North Ronaldsay (36 miles).

Lovely cottage and of all the places we have stayed over the years, the best equipped. Easy walk into Kirkwall ( 5 minutes to St Magnus), and Tesco / Lidl are a short walk also. Bed was super comfortable and the place was spotless clean.

A lovely cottage, beautifully presented. Lots of lovely touches like plenty of coat hangers and interesting art work. Having an en suite toilet and basin as well as the main bathroom really makes life easy. It is tight (as you are warned) to get into the parking space so the alternative parking in Clay Loan is worth using and only a very short walkRead more away. There were plenty of spaces every day when we visited in June. We heartily recommend this cottage. Hide

We enjoyed the space and comfort of the cottage especially as the weather was not very good. Very close to supermarkets and the centre of Kirkwall which was very convenient. The cottage is tucked away up a lane and it is very quiet and secluded. Even in the bad weather we thought that Orkney was an exceptional place to visit.
