The cottage is just a couple of miles from the charming coastal fishing village of Portpatrick where you will find a sandy beach, delightful harbour and a good choice of places to eat, drink and relax. Portpatrick is set around a small bay and hosts a Folk Festival each September. The village is located on the western coast of the Rhins of Galloway, a hammerhead-shaped peninsula stretching for 25 miles. This is a fantastic area for golfers, with four beautiful courses within just 10 miles. There are also plenty of opportunities for sea angling. The peninsula juts out into the Irish Sea, encompassing both Loch Ryan to the north and Luce Bay to the south. To the east is the bustling ferry port of Stranraer (6 miles), which offers a range of great shops, pubs and restaurants, with local attractions including Stranraer Museum and the Castle of St John which dates back 500 years. From Stranraer, you can catch a ferry for a day trip to Northern Ireland. Other attractions on the peninsula include the Gardens on the Dunskey Estate (2 miles – by arrangement only), Castle Kennedy Gardens (10 miles), Killantringan Lighthouse (4.5 miles) and Logan Botanic Garden (14 miles). To the south is the Mull of Galloway, Scotland’s most southerly point (22 miles) where you can explore the lighthouse, enjoy a bite to eat at the cliff-edge cafe and visit the RSPB nature reserve which is home to puffins, peregrine falcons and kittiwakes.
