Panoramic views over Rascarrel bay and a private hot tub make this the perfect base for a romantic holiday to quiet south-west Scotland. Located only 2.5 miles from the small village of Auchencairn, where a village shop will provide you with supplies, this is a true rural retreat where you never have to venture far from the beauty and the comfort of the lodge.

Vaulted ceilings and large windows throughout mean the interiors are bright and airy. Stylish décor with splashes of colour and pattern in the soft furnishings, as well as thoughtful design touches such as mood lighting in the kitchen and a decked area with a star ceiling, add luxury to your stay.

Climb the few steps into the lodge’s hallway, where you can leave coats and boots, and leads if your four-legged friends are joining you. There’s a utility room for anything that needs a refresh after a day out. Head into the spacious open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner, and together prepare a romantic meal with fresh local produce. Store the wine away in the wine cooler as you cook, and once everything is ready sit at the table for two and enjoy. As well as the dining table, there’s also a kitchen island with seating for leisurely breakfasts. Afterwards, take a seat on one of the sofas, and either admire the stunning sea views with a glass in hand, or relax with a film before bed. Unwind with a hot shower or soak in the free-standing bath, and then get a good night’s sleep in the king-size bed.

Outside, dine alfresco on the wonderful enclosed patio – accessible via French doors in the living area – or soak in the hot tub as you gaze out to sea. If the Scottish weather isn’t on your side, or it’s too cloudy to see the stars, then step through the second set of French doors to the covered decked area with seating and starry mood lighting.

When you want to do a more substantial trip for supplies than popping to the village shop, or simply wish to browse the windows of the many independent stores in the area, there are several pretty towns only a short drive away from the lodge. Castle Douglas (11 miles) is a recognised 'Food Town' is the perfect place for picking up locally made food and drink. Attractions there include Threave Garden, which also has a bat reserve, and Threave Castle, both of which are owned by National Trust for Scotland. Harbour town Kirkcudbright (12 miles) is the ideal place for art lovers, boasting Kirkcudbright Galleries, a handful of small quirky art galleries, and the home of Glasgow Boy and painter E.A. Hornel, Broughton House and Garden.

When the sun is shining, make the most of the good weather and wander out amid the spectacular scenery, with a beautiful ruin as your backdrop to a romantic picnic. Surround yourself in the history of Dundrennan Abbey (6 miles), and Sweetheart Abbey (22 miles), and explore the inside of well-preserved Cardoness Castle (20 miles), a 15th-century tower house with a dramatic past. For natural beauty, follow a trail along the coastline at Rockliffe, and Brighouse Bay (18 miles) is a popular beach.
