Picturesque Dunkeld sits on the banks of the River Tay, famous for its salmon fishing. Stroll around the village and see its brightly coloured ‘little houses’, built in the early 1700s and now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. The Trust also runs the Ell Shop, where you can see the original Scottish ell measure—just over a metre long—used by weavers in centuries past. Visit majestic Dunkeld cathedral, part romantic ruin and part parish church, in a beautiful, wooded setting. Browse the village’s excellent range of specialist shops and go down to the river to see Thomas Telford’s beautiful early 19th-century bridge across the Tay. It links Dunkeld with its sister village, Birnam, (1.5 miles) on the opposite bank and both have a network of wonderful walks and cycle tracks to explore.

Take the 3-mile riverside path from Birnam, which passes the Birnam Oak, an ancient survivor of the original Birnam Wood, made famous in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Beatrix Potter spent childhood summers in this lovely area and admirers will delight in the exhibition of her life and work at Birnam Arts Centre. A trip to the Loch of the Lowes Wildlife Reserve (4 miles) makes a great family day out, with hides, viewing windows and wildlife trails where you may spot red squirrels.

Fabulous cottage, near so many wonderful sights. Garden and patio area would be superb in good weather. Beds so comfy. Loved the open-plan kitchen/lounge/dining area. Only down-side would be situation. Wrong side of A9 for outing to shops/pub. Would always have to drive. However, would certainly recommend it! We loved it.
