    Calamura reviews
I had been to the cottage before, also in autumn. Back then I travelled with friends and didn't see much of the house. This time around, with my wife and kids, we spent quite some time there and we absolutely loved it. Everything is taken care of, everything is clean. The location is gorgeous and Findhorn is a lovely little town. I am definitely going back in a year or so. Unfortunately, my wife isn't too thrilled about moving to Scotland, but if she was, a place like this would be the go-to option ;-)
Mr De Haan - October 2018
Calamura is in a prime position in Findhorn and is one of the few properties to offer parking (though the width of the gates is a bit of a challenge for modern cars!). The grounds were a little unkept. The house was homely but comfortable. We had some trouble getting the heating to work at times when we needed it. Sadly our first few days were unseasonably cold for August. Findhorn has a magic all of its own so we had a good holiday.
    Mrs Smith - August 2018
We are a family of four with 2 dogs. We brought our boat and kayak on holiday. The parking area was large although the drive was a bit tight to get the trailer around. We found Calamura to be a quirky, pretty cottage. Plenty of space to feel comfortable. The views from the window are lovely over the inlet. An easy walk into the village and a good location to explore the area. There is a large supermarket in Forres along with plenty of decent places to eat. The house has a huge untended garden with a couple of boats and trailers overgrown however there is a place to sit outside. Where the cottage is let down is the general maintenance and care. There is a bare bulb light, torn flooring in the hall, paint flaking off the downstairs shower room ceiling as its not ventilated. The radiator is rusty behind the paint. The toilet seats are wobbly and the brush next to the toilet is not attached to the handle. The bannister rails at the top of the stairs are the sort for loft conversions. The left sided one is dangerously loose. There is damp marking on the wall in one of the bedrooms and the roof windows are filthy and need attention. One of the bedside cabinets had some kids headphones in, we presumed they had been left behind. My husband unrolled, unkinked and reattached the hose fittings correctly to get it to work so we could rinse wetsuits etc. All in all this is a beautiful house and appears to have been neglected. the possessions and books are interesting and the location is great. But a good clean and a bit of TLC is much needed if you want 5 stars.
Owners Response: "Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that you were not totally satisfied with your stay. The house is in the process of having some updating and serious repairs done. We have had a very full season of bookings and have just spent three weeks there ourselves, during which most of your points have already been addressed or are in hand. The damp wall has led to major re-pointing work carried out earlier this year, and the bedroom is due to be repainted once the wall has sufficiently dried out. The downstairs bathroom is due to be completely redecorated before the next season. As you mention in the review it is a beautiful house with unique character and we aim to maintain a ‘homey’ rather than a ‘hotel’ feel. It is much loved and used by our own families on a regular basis. Those interested in coming to enjoy the ‘Calamura experience’ can be assured that the house will have been given the attention it requires before the next season. Finally, and in case this is not clear to others looking at the website, we would like to mention that we have a no dogs policy at Calamura. Response from Cottages & Castles : We have added to the Layout section that Calamura does not accept pets."
    Mr Hall - August 2018
My family have been coming to Findhorn for decades & the past few years we’ve stayed in Calamura. We really love the house, it’s garden. We hope to continue coming for many years to come.
    Mrs Hughes - July 2018
2nd stay at location, when arrived house had no oil heating , very cold, Owners very helpful when contacted, although Emergency plumber arrived very promptly we spent first night with no heating or hot water, we did have an open fire supplied with coal and logs,we had no young children or elderly persons with us, plumber arrived promptly in morning and fixed heating. We did have an enjoyable stay and comfortable 2nd and 3rd night in house.
    Mr Shearer - January 2018
This is a beautiful property located in a stunning area with wonderful views. The property was well equipped and very comfortable. And the open fire in the sitting room was very welcoming on a chilly night. Excellent base to explore the highlands and would highly recommend would definitely return.
    Mrs Hawkins - October 2017
Lovely characterful home - very quirky. Comfortable and well-equipped. Could be chilly as we couldn't master the central heating controls. Open fire great and starter pack of fuel much appreciated. Large garden, great to park. Super location. Walking distance to beach / shop / café / Kimberley Inn. Further afield, enjoyed visits to Brodie and Cawdor Castles and Caringorms.
    Mrs Kneeshaw - May 2017
    good value characterful spacious comfortable
    Mr Smith - April 2017
No real criticisms - icing on the cake would be to have wifi. It is remote and had to go to cafe to review emails. When heating off lost heat quickly probably would benefit from having glazing and insulation updated.
    Mrs Richards - March 2017
One of the few Findhorn properties with private off-road parking, Calamura is a great family-friendly home, which has been recently improved with a new oven and hob. Comfortable rather than luxurious, it has everything you could want for an easy-going, kick off your shoes and relax break.
    Mr Harkness - November 2016
Calamura is a lovely, well equipped cottage is in a beautiful location with simply stunning views of the beach. This visit ( one of many) we booked two days for the children at Findhirn Marina, where they had superb water sport tuition in the bay opposite. There are many places to visit locally including Logie Steading, situated in a pretty location with amazing walks, lovely food, art gallery, gift shops with crafts, excellent butcher, garden centre and lots more ! Also visit Knockando Woollen Mill, sponsored by the Princes Trust, it's truly a gem, hidden away amid the most wonderful views, it's a working mill with very good crafts and tea rooms. For shopping there is, very locally, Brodie CountryFayre, just outside Forres, a must for gifts, crafts, Scottish food men's and Ladies wear and a fantastic buffet style restraunt. This is really the tip of the iceberg with things to do in this area, forgive my enthusiasm but we are frequent visitors and I just wanted to spread the word ! Oh forgot to mention Aviemore, Cullodden, Johnstons of Elgin, Brodie Castle, the Culbin Forest and for a bit of an alternative time, visit the Findhorn Foundation !
    Mrs Davies - August 2016
It's a great house in a great location. quite authentic without being rundown or too old. The only drawback is the timer on the hot water. It's off between 10 am anx 4.30 pm, which means you arrive in an arctic house in winter...
Mr De Haan - November 2015
This Amazing property always puts a smile on our faces straight away... This year the car was unpacked in record time... and as the Owners of Calamura so kindly provide garden furniture this was put to good use straight away... within minutes our party was sat with liquid refreshments in hand and starting to enjoy the Findhorn vibe... It is so Easy to sit in the garden with a Smug Look on your face and watch the World go by and pretend that this is your own property... some in our party even had a tendancy to stick their little finger out whilst raising their glass to their lips... Well for 2 weeks of the Year at least its nice to Dream...! Already making plans for 2016...
    Mr Strachan - June 2015
We have stayed at Calamura many times and would thoroughly recommend it, especially as it has recently undergone some new decoration in the sitting room.
    Mrs Perry - March 2015
Calamura is in a great location in Findhorn. It is comfortable, and we have stayed there many times. It could do with a little attention, ie the carpet is quite stained and some more lamps and new cushions would give it a real lift.
Owners Response: "Thank you for your feedback. We are aware of the carpet stains and although we have the carpets professionally cleaned at the end of the season each year, there are one or two which simply wont come out. This is something that we will address in due course along with this year's big tasks of repainting of the outbuildings and extensive work on the many trees in the garden. We will also look to doing something about the cushions and lamps!"
    Mrs Perry - September 2014
We stayed in Calamura for three weeks and there was not one single day which was worth less than five stars! The house with its lovely trees - outstanding; perfectly situated at the bay and less than ten minutes to the village with its shops and very very good pubs, not to forget the wonderful fish & chips stall which only opens at the weekends; very well equipped; absolutely cosy and comfortable; managed and kept to a truly high standard. This expresses the thoughts and evaluation made by all three families involved in our party. If we come back to Moray again, and I think we shall, it will be Calamura again.
    Mr Kassner - July 2014
As someone who grew up in Findhorn...The chance to come back and experience the village from this gorgeous location was truely amazing...Within seconds of arrival it became obvious to all in our party that we were going to have a wonderful holiday in greet us we had our very own deer in the sprawling undergrowth of the beautiful unique garden...Smiles on faces started from this point and never left for the next two weeks...the house itself oozes charm and even thou it was June the chance to light an open fire was to much to resist and so this feature alone just made you feel like the house was wrapping its arms around you as a welcome...I do not have one negative thing to say about this property and am already looking forward to the chance of making a similar booking in 2015...
    Mr Strachan - June 2014
Fantastic cottage. We had five people staying there and it was a great size for us. Would love to be able to spend more time there and in a different season.
    Mr Barrett - December 2013
Calamura is a wonderful holiday cottage in an utterly beautiful part of Scotland. Our stay was relaxing and fun and I would heartily recommend this cottage for your stay in the Scottish Highlands. It is situated in the beautiful little town of Findhorn and only an hour or so away from Loch Ness.
    Mr Carroll - October 2013
Was a great place to spend a holiday but now not so good due to moaning pub landlords who close when they feel like it 10pm on a Saturday night and £2.65 for a pint wont be back. Cant fault Calamura as it is a lovely cottage with everything you need for a holiday.
    Mr Clark - September 2013
The house was very comfortable, great garden and great location across from the shore, the local amenities, shop ,baker, pubs, cafe's were first class. I can only give 4 star's to the house because of the following. The oven was dirty and contained the charcoled remains of what I think was a sausage! The manuals for various appliances were scattered around, not contained,as is usual, in a folder,so had to be searched for.The tumble dryer, despite strict instructions pasted to the door regarding the care of it,was full of fluff and the condenser full of water. In addition the curtain in the shower room fell down, great shower though.
    Mrs Giddey - August 2013
Very good accommodation and facilities in a super position.
    Mrs Grant - June 2013
We loved our stay at Calamura the house was comfortable, spacious and views were spectacular. We have been to Calamura in the past when our children were smaller and they still like to go back even though they are in their late teens and twenties. One of the few places they will go with us now they are older they like it so much. Who is the lady on the stairs? The house would nt be the same without her presence. An excellent relaxing holiday home, I wish we could buy it. We will return. Findhorn is a relaxing holiday destination not many places on the planet to beat it. Excellent base for touring.
    Mrs Stewart - March 2013
Have stayed at Calamura a number of times, and at different times of year (Winter, Spring, Summer) .It's an excellent 3 bedroomed house overlooking the Findhorn estuary and in a good location for walking, sightseeing, wildlife watching or for getting out into the Scottish countryside for hiking, cycling etc.. Would definately recommend it and would be very likely to return for another break there in the future.
    Mr Courtney - February 2013
Calamura is a stunning house in a beautiful location. My little boy loved that the beach was just across the road from us. Findhorn is a very special place, with lots to do. Its also perfect for exploring further afield. We can't wait to go back!!!
    Mr Taylor - August 2012
This is one of the best self catering cottages we have ever stayed at the property has a lovely feel and the garden is great for the children. Findhorn itself is a beautiful village with an amazing beach.
    Mrs Browning - August 2012
house is very unusual, lots of room and the garden is amazing. could do with a bit of a scrub, especially the oven which produced smelly black smoke when we switched it on and took me an hour and a half to clean properly so we could use it. but the views and the garden made up for it!
    Mrs Cameron - October 2011
