Castle on the Loch enjoys a glorious setting with its own delightful gardens and beautiful views across Holy Loch.  This impressive Scottish castle welcomes up to 42 guests making it ideal for a special event, celebration or a superb self-catering holiday destination for a large family gathering, groups of friends or even a wedding.

Designed by David Hamilton, who also designed Dunoon Castle, and built by James Hunter in the early 1800s, the castle has many magnificent features with beautiful ceilings, decorative plasterwork, carved doors and a superb sweeping staircase. Offering plenty of space and fun for all ages, this welcoming large holiday house has its own heated indoor swimming pool, games room with snooker table, large conservatory and outdoor play area. The large front hall with its open fire, seating area and grand piano provides an impressive entrance and double doors between the two drawing rooms fold back creating one grand reception room where everyone can come together - perfect for parties or any gathering. The larger drawing room boasts a bar area and a doorway leads through to the library. The elegant dining room makes a wonderful backdrop for memorable dinners and there is ample space for relaxed meals and summertime dining in the conservatory.

The nineteen simply furnished but comfortable bedrooms offer flexible accommodation suitable for family groups, children and adults alike. All the bedrooms benefit from en-suite shower rooms and those to the front of the castle have glorious views over the garden and across the sea. The conservatory opens on to a large terrace with garden furniture and the gardens and lawns are surrounded by beautiful ancient trees making a great habitat for birds and red squirrels.  In the evening and early morning deer can often be seen grazing.

Castle on the Loch is very accessible from Glasgow by ferry over the Firth of Clyde from Gourock to Dunoon. The Cowal Peninsula, with its beautiful open scenery, is a particularly captivating part of the West Coast of Scotland and offers a wide range of activities including walking and cycling with many wonderful forest trails, sailing on the beautiful waters of the Firth of Clyde, a challenging 18-hole golf course, trout, salmon & sea trout fishing, as well as horse-riding, quad biking or just relaxing in the beautiful scenery. Cowal is also home to several beautiful gardens including Arkinglas Woodland Garden which has one of the finest collections of rhododendrons and conifers within the British Isles and the nearby 150 acre Benmore Botanic Gardens. The nearby Puck’s Glen also offers a magical forest walk. At the end of August Dunoon hosts the Cowal Gathering which incorporates highland games, traditional dancing and pipe band competitions. In October, the Cowal fest offers many events including walking, cycling, scenery, wildlife, history, heritage, arts, film, crafts, drama, and music. Dunoon Castle and museum is worth a visit with an exciting history of the area from ancient times to present day.

The owners live in a self-contained wing at the back of the castle - privacy is guaranteed and they take great care to ensure that you have either as little or as much assistance as you require.

    Castle on the Loch reviews
This Castle was a good choice a bit far away from the city of Glassgow but what a scenic drive from hafton to the city. The internet only worked in a couple of rooms and we had to contact the owners several times to reset the router, if your smart you will only turn on lights at night that you need to be safe and turn the hot water tank off when not using or the electric and heating bill can be a shock to your wallet. The castle itself is very clean and the kitchen is full of everyday items to cook store and prepare meals. There are two large dinning tables to eat on and there is lots of room to house a large group. The beds are somewhat hard but some people like it that way. Room 11 is the best - big bath tub and nice stand up shower and two sinks but no power outlet for hair dryer or electric plug in razor. Plenty of parking and lots of nearby shops for groceries or drinks. The owners and the house keeper and ground keeper were very helpful each time we approached them. The pool is awesome but the hot tube doesnt work. There is a large snooker table and fuzzball and pingpong as well. As a Canadian I thought the price was a bit steep worked out to $2075 a day to stay there. Thats including heat and hydro even though we paid that separate. The grounds were amazing the garden the flowers the lawn with an occasional deer on the grounds but be careful 4 trees had large amounts of hornets lurking about. But out of 10 I gave it a solid 8 lost 2 marks just cause the little things add up. It rained 5 of my 8 days ...... thanks for the castle.

This Castle is a beautiful building that served our party of 14 quite well. The owners were very nice and helpful throughout our stay. We held a formal dinner that was catered by "Turnip the Beet" and highly recommend them for this venue.
    Mr Milewski - July 2018
This was the 25th year of our group holidaying together and Hafton Castle made a fine venue. The bedrooms are comfortable and are all en suite while there are many spacious public rooms which allowed us to gather in different groups at different times. The dining room was a bit dark but easily accommodated 27. We self cater, groups taking it in turn to cook, and the kitchen was very satisfactory although we like to meet in kitchens for breakfast and seating space was limited. For families there is a children's play area and a large lawn. Hafton is conveniently located for Dunoon and Ben More Gardens, in our case it was access to a range of hills that made it ideal. There are many Grahams, Corbetts and other Marilyns in the vicinity. The owner lives on site and is friendly, helpful and approachable. There were 2 issues. The 2 downstairs bedrooms are damp, probably a leaking shower above which the owner is looking into. The kitchen only has 1 household dishwasher which was inadequate for 27 so if you filled the castle... Otherwise, highly recommended for large groups.
    Mr Ramage - July 2017
Overall our stay was fantastic. The castle is beautiful and the space is amazing for parties. The owners were very friendly and helpful and checked in to see that everything was going well. The castle did have some repair problems (there were a number of leaks in the roof) but that may have been due to the bad weather. One thing to draw attention to is the cost of gas and electricity. This may well be called out but in the small print and we were not prepared for the total cost (just over £1,000 for a week). This adds on to the overal cost (which was pretty reasonable) so people should factor that in when planning to stay.

We had a fantastic party weekend at Hafton Castle. The venue is great and having use of the pool is well worth it. Would recommend it for any large group event there was 34 of us for most of the weekend and we all had a great time.
