When you see Downie Park from the lovely tree lined drive, it will catch your breath. It is, quite simply, a beautiful building in a stunning location. Part of the Cortachy and Airlie Estates, the house sits at the foot of the Angus Glens surrounded by hills, woodland and farmland and looks down to the River South Esk well known for its salmon. There are endless beautiful walks throughout the estate and on the hills and moors above.

Downie is an imposing house from the huge stone flagged and pillared hall with its 2 story hanging staircase, to the beautifully light and spacious oval rooms that are a feature. All the rooms are full of light and space with gorgeous views of garden or countryside.

The house has been newly refurbished in an eclectic and unusual style and offers a deliciously quirky presentation with fine fabrics, antiques mixing with more industrial and modern pieces. The oval bedroom has absolutely gorgeous hand painted walls that will entrance. Fine white cotton bed linen is ready to slip in to at the end of a day. There is one en suite bedroom on the lower ground floor which would work well for less mobile guests.

Most bathrooms have the original deep clawfoot baths – deep and long - they are a comforting way to relax at the end of a day. There are two drawing rooms with open fires – one with TV so an easy break out space is there for those who want a quiet moment. A high ceilinged formal dining room complete with open fire is ready to host some marvellous evenings. As with so many old houses, the kitchen is in the lower ground floor and thoughtfully, there is plenty of dining space here too with a kitchen table.

This is a hidden and beautiful spot, perfect for weddings and celebrations or for fishing parties. Fine golf courses such as Carnoustie or Rosemount are close by and the nearby Angus coast has many unspoilt beaches. Edinburgh is within a couple of hours and nearby cities like Perth or Dundee with the stunning V&A museum, are easy days out.

    What and amazing property I only wish we had more time to explore the huge and enchanting house and grounds. I highly recommend it for large groups and those with kids, although do be aware there are many many stairs, some of them steep. There are numerous bathrooms and too many rooms to use There is a beautiful river on the property to explore and a lovely long walk along the driveway for easier access. Eliza

    Our family of 17 plus 2 dogs celebrated the new year at. this wonderful house . The house is extremely large lots of room for everyone to relax , we even managed to have a ceilidh in the beautiful entrance hall. The kitchen was perfect and big enough to enjoy breakfast together. The house is extremely cosy with endless hot water , it has been very tastefully decorated , has a quirky feel to it . The house is set in breath taking surroundings , we all enjoyed walks by the river each day , even joined by some deer . A big thank you to Dot who met with us before our visit so we could see the house , she was so friendly and welcoming and was there to greet us on our arrival at New Year. I thoroughly recommend this house .

    We had a fantastic weekend celebrating special family birthdays at Downiepark in February. The house is beautiful, full of character, warm and comfortable, but not so formal that you can't relax. The grounds around the house were perfect for games with the children in the afternoon and the house itself had something for everyone from 70 to 2 years old to enjoy when the partying started. Table tennis for the teens, music in the hall, quiet space for those who wanted a break and room for everyone to eat together. We did not want to leave! The caretaker, Dot, could not have been more helpful and was keen to ensure we enjoyed our stay.
