    Fassfern Cottage reviews
TRANSLATION: The cottage is beautifully situated. House and surroundings are well maintained. Everything is important, the rooms are comfortably furnished. The upstairs bathroom is a bit narrow, but there is a second downstairs toilet. Wonderful is the fireplace with the free wood supply, which we have used much. Since the weather was very good, only deckchairs in the garden would have been missing ... The house is ideally located for exploring the walking areas around Fort William, but also close to the sea. Highly recommended and the price-performance ratio is extremely good.
    Mrs Himburg - July 2019
This is a great little cottage in a tranquil setting, perfect for getting away from it all. We particularly enjoyed having a range of walks right on our doorstop, but also being well placed for exploring the wider area, including Skye, Loch Ness and Ben Nevis. The weather wasn't always great, but having a DVD player and a log fire was great on those wetter days and a perfect place to unwind after climbing Ben Nevis. Others have commented that the furnishings and decor are a little dated, but that to me, was part of the charm. I don't expect a rural cottage to look like a Finnieston loft apartment. That said, it could use a little TLC. The electric cooker really does need replacing. The grill is not really usable as the handle has broken. It's been fixed with some hard as nails, but that's ineffective when it gets hot, so it comes off in your hand. I would urge the owners to please replace this - it's what stopped me leaving a five star rating. We had everything else we needed, including a cafetiere, which I mention, as we lugged our own as it's not something we always get. Otherwise, this was great value for money and the housekeeper, Jenny, was very helpful both before our arrival and when we got there.
    Mr Whitehead - June 2019
Lovely cosy cottage. Handy for all sorts of local attractions. Had a problem with very noisy central heating which stopped people sleeping well. Hopefully this has been sorted out by the next time we visit.
    Mrs John - April 2019
Had another lovely stay at Fassfern cottage whilst busy in the area researching our move to the area. Lovely and cosy and the fire was great on a cold wet evening. On arrival discovered that there was no kettle but a quick phone call soon sorted that out so no problem.
    Mr Stevens - October 2018
This cottage is excellent value for money. You will not find anything else in the area for this price that matches what this cottage has to offer. We were concerned after reading the reviews from some previous visitors but we had no choice as could not find anything else in the vicinity. We were pleasantly surprised with the cottage as it was roomy and very clean. Well stocked with kitchen utensils, large bedrooms with plenty of towels. Yes it is a bit dated, yes the stairs are a little steep but not so you cannot manage. The only thing we would have liked to see different was a proper shower. (there is a shower attachment in the bath). On the whole this cottage offers a great deal for the price. The wifi caused us no problems as some people have said but you do need to be in the lounge for it to work. The area is wonderful and would recommend the Gondola ride and the cruise from Fort William - we did the evening cruise of Loch Eil that only runs in the summer months and found it very informative and a great way to see the spectacular scenery from a different angle. Have already booked a return visit.
    Mr Stevens - August 2018
The cottage is very old fashioned / out of date with vertiginous stairs but fine if you are fit and adaptable. It does not have any effective wifi and should not pretend that it does. The wifi did not work at all during our 6 day stay despite us reporting this twice. The housekeeper is lovely and very helpful but the wifi is beyond her control - the owner needs to install a far more powerful router. The gardens are lovely - a great base - but note - 10 miles out of Fort William.
    Mrs Pegman - June 2018
Fassfern Cottage is extremely useful if booked as extra space along with Fassfern House.
    Mrs John - March 2018
Enjoyed the cottage, not modern, but worked well for us, partly because we also had the "big house". Great views. Great walks. Weather pretty good for November - cold but dry. Log fire wonderful. Helpful friendly caretaker.
    Mrs Norrie - November 2017
The cottage is set in beautiful grounds and an area that is quite magnificent. This was our third visit to Fassfern, but our first stay in the cottage and not the house. The cottage has great potential, but is in desperate need of a makeover. The kitchen is very dated, and the electric cooker inefficient and slow. On arrival we had no bowls, mugs, spoons or teaspoons, these were provided when the matter was raised. The furniture in the living room - again dated and very low as has been previously commented on, which for us more senior visitors made getting out off interesting to say the least !! Also there was no DVD player, again previously mentioned, which considering how cheap they are is a bit of a mystery (provided when we asked for one). As for the bathroom, which has also been commented on previously, it was more like an assault course for the over 60's !! The bath is under an eve, shallow, and is difficult to get into, and pretty impossible to get out of. The toilet is sandwiched next to the bath and in not a convenient convenience so we used the downstairs one. I also agree with previous comments that the stair configuration in the dark at night is not safe. The garden and grounds are immaculate and the staff always friendly and helpful, the cottage just needs some investing in. The steam train to Mallaig is great fun, and paying the bit extra to go first class is well worth it (can only be booked on line). The seafood restaurant Crannog in Fort William is also worth a visit. Great food, if a bit pricey, but delicious.
    Mr Ormrod - August 2017
My Mother in law used to live here when she was housekeeper for the Dulvertons. So marvellous to see it again & good renovations. My comments can be seen on review of Fassfern House. Forgot to say then how super it was to have all linen provided & beds made up, oh joy!
    Mrs Macleod - July 2017
TRANSLATION : We enjoyed the stay very much. There are walking routes that start from the same stone bridge near the house. With children we find in Fort Wiliam a magnificent activity for rainy days. A rock wall in a church, with a pre-boulder for all ages and levels. Near the Mac Donalds there is also a play area (balls and slides) where to hang out with the kids in bad weather. The best: the route of the glenn nevis waterfalls. It is not very hard and can be done with small children without problems.
    Mr Candido - June 2017
lovely property, well kept and clean, housekeeper couldn't be more helpful and friendly and welcoming. The "down side" is mainly the bathroom - scary at night the approach - I slipped a few times on the carpet steps. Also the bath is the wrong position- it is right on the slope, so you have to be careful not to bang your head!! The kitchen lino also could use an upgrade. Apart from that, everything was really lovely. The lounge delightful -the bedrooms gorgeous and the heating incredibly effective. A shame there were so many bumblebees right at the door - we had to dash in and out not to disturb them. (on the other hand, they are a protected and endangered species so it was fun to watch them at work!!) Would definitely stay again despite the aforementioned points!!
    Mrs Epstein - May 2017
The cottage itself has charm but needs a little updating. Particularly no shower or DVD. However the location and grounds make up for this. The woodlands and garden area is superb and well kept. Plenty of space for parking and a good location to explore the highlands and the Arisaig beaches. Felt it was a good price for the property. The cottage itself was very clean with lots of towels and the beds were comfy. Really enjoyed our week there in the peace and tranquility.
    Ms Ruxton - September 2016
This is a really great place to stay for visiting Fort william and the highlands. Accommodation was first class and the caretaker was excellent in assisting us with any problems.
    Mr Burke - September 2016
We rented both the House and the Cottage, and this review is for both. We got married on 20th July in St. Mary and St. Finnan’s RC Church in Glenfinnan, a few miles from Fassfern, and most of our wedding guests stayed at Fassfern with us. We definitely could not have chosen a better place, it was absolutely stunning! The House is something out of a Jane Austen’s novel, and the park around it utterly fascinating, even if it was pouring down during most of our stay. The building is very comfortable, with plenty of rooms and bathrooms, an extremely well-equipped kitchen, and wonderful drawing rooms with perfectly-working fireplaces (and plenty of wood). The small billiard room and the drying room (both at Fassfern House) are a bonus, both as to enjoyment and as to usefulness. The staff at Cottages and Castles was very efficient in the time between booking and getting there, and on the spot, Tuula, the caretaker, was both extremely kind and helpful. In a few words, we highly recommend a stay at Fassfern, even if you are not getting married :-)!
    Mr Bruschi - July 2016
The cottage is located in a very beautiful environment as the Highlands are truly great. But the estate itself is very nice and quiet. The equipment is old standard, it's ok for holidays. The beds and sofas are comfortable. But the shower take much getting used to. It took some time to get warm water. But we managed it. In the kitchen you've got all you need. Wifi works fine. The fireplace is very nice and works fantastic unfortunately the wood was not dry enough so we needed a long time to get it started. We came as a family with 4 members and had a nice week. And we didn't had any problem with the stair.
    Mr Brock - July 2016
We really enjoyed our stay , the house was very clean upon our arrival and if we needed any help or information the on site manager was always on hand to help. The house is set in lovely grounds that you have great walks. The location is good as its close to Fort William but also in a rural area with a lovely views. We stayed for a week and enjoyed having coffee in the mornings outside the house. Kitchen was well equipped with all you will need with a comfy lounge with the log fire. Very Pet Friendly in the cottage and in the grounds.
    Mr Egan - May 2016
The cottage was warm clean and the welcome from Tuula was great, it had all that was needed in the kitchen and the bedroom was good, the way to access the bathroom is a little peculiar but we soon got used to it. The one thing that let the property down is the 3 piece suite it is very soft and low, so for those of us who are not quite so mobile caused something of a problem when it came to getting out the chair. Given the rents that are charged decent furniture does not seem to much to ask.
    Mr Hoskins - April 2016
Fassfern Cottage is a great base for those who want to return to a comfortable, cosy haven after spending the day exploring the wonderful, wild countryside between Fort William and Mallaig. Its ideal for those who appreciate the great outdoors. I stayed in November, and the autumn colours on the Fassfern Estate were wonderful. The welcome on arrival was friendly and helpful (Thank you Tuula). The house was always warm, with electricity, central heating and logs for the fire all included in the rental. Wi-Fi and TV worked well, which is not always the case with rental cottages. I also had good mobile phone reception. I found the beds and furniture comfortable enough, though some other visitors have commented otherwise. - I suppose personal preferences vary. Note no washing machine. Kitchen equipment meets most needs, but it would have been nice to have some larger mugs and a bit more baking equipment. The unusual angular stair arrangement takes a bit of getting used to (especially in the middle of the night), but no problem really. All in all, good value for money, and I would come back again.
Mr And Mrs Gainey - October 2015
A really beautiful cottage for nature lover
    Mr Baumueller - August 2015
Well looked after cottage in quiet and beautiful spot.
    Mr Barends - July 2015
We were are large family party so had booked Fassfern House as well. This worked very well and we all had our own space but cooked and ate together. We enjoyed boat trips from Arrisag and Mallaig to islands
    Mrs Cressey - May 2015
Translation - Pretty cottage situated in a quiet beautiful and relaxing. Fort William is not very far for supplies. The cottage is centrally located to many attractions and sights. Maria is very attentive to our requests. One regret that the shower is also inconvenient to use, and e furniture a little "tired" in the living room
    Miss Casanova - July 2014
Excellent location and value for money. Cottage equipment a bit basic but the the staff were very helpful, very welcoming.
    Mr Evans - July 2014
I feel a bit mean giving only 3* but it is because the beds and lounge furniture were not comfortable. This had been mentioned in many reviews and I think that it's time this was sorted. I'm glad we were only staying 1 week because of this. That being said the rest of the cottage was lovely. The decor was clean and tidy and Maria was very helpful on arrival and explained everything to us. The kitchen was well equipped and as we cooked most of our meals we had no problems. We were aware of the stairs being a bit awkward and Maria made sure we were alright with them before leaving us! I suggest that you do not get inebriated or accidents may happen! The grounds are beautiful and we sat outside in the sun watching the House Martins making nests in the eaves of the house. The nearby walks were lovely and not too strenuous. My only other concern was the main house next door was booked and you can hear quite clearly conversations, music and laughter. These went on till the early hours. We didn't complain as most of the time they were out and there wasn't anything you could do. You can't expect people on holiday not to talk or laugh! So it's just to be aware of this if you're expecting a 'quiet' week. This is my second holiday at Fassfern. Two years ago we stayed in Woodland cottage. I would effeminately return again if the beds and furniture were improved.
    Mrs Barber - May 2014
Fassfern Cottage is a lovely place for gathering your head together. There's a huge amount to do in the area which is why're have been back many times. The kitchen could do with a bit of an update with the addition of a washer/drier at the very least. Otherwise it's excellent. The fact that heating costs are in the price is a big advantage over other properties.
    Mrs John - April 2014
Fassfern is a good cottage but with a wee bit of investment could be amazing. Great location and friendly welcome, well heated, clean and comfortable with nice beds and a lovely wood fire. Good basic facilities, but if you're looking at doing much cooking bring your own knives, thick-based pans, pint glasses, clingfilm, foil, salt and pepper and for entertainment an IPod Dock. That said pricing is fair and the setting is wonderful, so I would go back with a few more home comforts in the back of the car..
    Mr Nicolson - December 2013
This cottage is in a convenient location for sightseeing. However there are drawbacks which need the owners attention. The lounge seating is shot - not a single comfortable chair. We found the beds hard. The bathroom has no shower and the bath sits under a sloping roof which is not convenient for getting in and out. The kitchen was well appointed. The second loo on the ground floor was an advantage. The grounds of Fassfern House, which the cottage overlooks, are only accessible if no one is in the House which means there is nowhere sunny and private to sit out. The housekeeper, Maria, and her husband were exceptionally friendly and helpful.
    Ms Risdon - September 2013
Very comfortable cottage. Television could though do with upgrading. Even with freeview could only get about ten channels. Although I could get ITV 2 I couldn't get ITV 3 for love or money despite retuning the freeview box on at least three occasions.
    Mr Adams - June 2013
We were a family from 5yrs to 75yrs and we all found our interests satisfied from walking the dog to climbing and cycling down Ben Nevis. The house was just right and sparkling clean thanks to Maria and her husband who made us feel very welcome. The garden was big enough for ball games and sunny! enough to just sit and admire. We will come again please.
    Mrs Cressey - May 2013
We were looking for a traditional cottage with a log burning fire near to Fort William and close to some Munros. We were initially put off by the cottage being adjacent to the much larger Fassfern House (fearing both noise and being overwhelmed by a large party next door). Although there was some noise it was modest, did not disrupt our stay and enjoyed a great deal of privacy. We were lucky with the weather and the only down side was that our private patio was north facing and so largely in shade all the time. The cottage is spacious and full of character. The bathroom fittings are rather tired and the shower is a rubber hose fitted over the taps. There was always gallons of piping hot water and everywhere was nice and clean on arrival. If travelling light, asking the housekeeper to provide towels is a cheap option - lovely soft and big white towels. The kitchen has a reasonable range of appliances/equipment but as always unless guests point out issues to the housekeeper there is some likelihood that something will be missing/damaged/faulty. In our case, a full block of kitchen knives were all blunt and we had no means of sharpening them. We coped but the housekeeper was informed at the end of the week and was going to sort it out. The housekeeper was very friendly and met us on arrival to show us all the bits and pieces, wood store etc. She pointed out the one hazard in the cottage which is a strange stair arrangement to get from landing to bathroom; in the pitch black of night a sudden drop would definitely catch the unwary. Location wise, the cottage is set back from the road far enough to lose any sense of traffic noise and has access to lovely walks on the estate and to the very many larger walks nearby. Also very convenient for ski slopes, Fort William, Mallaig etc. We loved it and would expect to return again.
    Mr Clarke - March 2013
Lovely cosy cottage, we loved it! Very warm and loads of hot water. Very clean. A big thank you to Maria, the caretaker who met us when we arrived, a really lovely lady. The kitchen was okay, but a few utensils were missing i.e potato peeler, but that was the only thing wrong. The walks in the surrounding area are just fantastic with some spectacular views, overall we loved it, the dogs loved it and cannot wait to go back!
    Mr Willis - October 2012
great place for a break, central for so many areas so much to do
    Mrs Holmes - July 2012
A very comfortable and homely cottage. Excellent base for exploring the Highlands. The Ben Nevis Inn definitely well worth a visit for excellent food and drink.
    Mr Phelps - June 2012
Lovely well equipped cottage in a great location (but you do need a car). Very peaceful surrounded by forest, a delightful setting. The cottage is very well equipped (could do with a shower instead of just a bath), and the open wood fire is perfect for the cold nights.
    Mr Chaundy - October 2011
Nice authentic place to stay, roomy chambers. You can do a lot of beautiful walks on surrondings of the estate. It is a central place to visit Fort William, Mallaig, Oban and Inverness.
    Mr Koch - September 2011
As usual our Fassfern experience was great.
    Mrs John - April 2011
Fourth time we have been to Fassfern and as always we have a relaxing time. Ample walks in the area and places to visit if its raining! We love to light the log fire and curl up during the evening. If I could make some suggestions it would be a new cooker. Sort out the Digital TV, it kept breaking up-very annoying and make it snow more when we are there. I can not recommend Fassfern enough if you want a quiet week in an isolated location.
    Mrs Stanley - February 2011
