Description

Set just off the main road near the village of Ardgay, this attractive Gate Lodge on Gledfield Estate has been recently refurbished to provide a delightful, fresh rural retreat in this beautiful part of Scotland. The River Carron runs through the estate and there are many hill and river walks available in the area. Nearby are lovely beaches and walks along the coast, making Gledfield Gate Lodge the perfect self catering holiday cottage from which to explore Sutherland, a beautiful part of Scotland.

The cottage itself has a well proportioned sitting room with a welcoming open fire and an LCD TV with freestat and a DVD player, so even on the cooler days you will have a warm and entertaining space. The holiday cottage is on one floor so the two bedrooms and bathroom are very accessible for all ages. Outside there is a good sized walled garden laid to lawn which is secure for children but the access to the hill behind is open to the road at the end of the drive.

    Gledfield Gate Lodge reviews
Gledfield Gate Lodge is a lovely property in a quiet area. The lodge is exceptionally clean, nicely decorated and fitted out with all the cooking and laundry appliances you could need. The beds are very comfortable. I have been visiting Scotland for most years since 1977 and this vies with an exceptional property in Portpatrick as the best I have rented in all of those years. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who asked. We had a little difficulty in finding the lodge when we arrived as the directions were a little misleading. I would dispense with the 1.5 mile reference and just say take the left fork after the school. Also the photograph is of the back of the property so looking for it from the road does not work
    Mr Jones - May 2019
3rd year staying at Gledfield Gate Lodge so we must like it ! First class accommodation, well equipped and beautifully clean. Very peaceful and, being central with good access to other places, a good base to explore the area - not that we need to as we've been visiting the general area for the last 20+years ! Compliments also to Nancy Macpherson, who's always on hand to deal with any minor queries and is very helpful. All in all, an excellent cottage.
    Mrs Spence - May 2019
Well appointed cottage, great location, good for dogs. Our third visit.
    Mrs Hordern - September 2018
    We enjoyed our stay
    Mr Lefherz - September 2018
We have stayed at the Gate Lodge for a number of years. It is very well appointed, clean and cosy. The only reason we did not give five stars is the lack of wifi for keeping in touch with emails
Mr And Mrs Stenhouse - September 2017
We loved the cottage and its location. It was very comfortable and was equipped with all necessary appliances. Beds very comfortable. The website photograph of the living room however, is misleading. We were expecting to see the lovely scotch plaid couches and easy chairs, instead we found a rather unattractive electric-blue rug by the fire place and leather couches. Not very cozy and cottage-like.
    Mrs Aeschliman - August 2017
The kettle did not work from day 1 of my stay - even though there had been people in just before me. It would have been nice to have curtains or blinds in the kitchen and bathroom. Poor quality of pillows in bedrooms and the dressing table and mirrors too small to be of any use.
Owners Response: "We apologise that the kettle wasn’t working but the previous guests did not mention any problems with the kettle. My contact details are left in the cottage for any problems/queries. If you had contacted me I would have been more than happy to purchase a new kettle for you. During the nine years the cottage has been a holiday let no one has ever mentioned curtains or blinds for the kitchen and bathroom. The back of the cottage is private and not overlooked; also the bathroom has a frosted window. I am very sorry that you felt unhappy about this. The pillows are regularly washed and renewed as necessary, I apologise that none of the pillows were acceptable for you. This is a small, country cottage and the furniture we have has been selected for the size of the rooms. I apologise that you found the dressing table and mirrors too small. I trust you still had an enjoyable holiday and thank you for the lovely truffles you left."
    Mrs Wardall - December 2016
My husband and I plus yellow Labrador Brodie have stayed in Gledfield Gate Lodge many times and have never been disappointed. The Lodge is always beautifully presented. Big thank you to Mrs McPhearson. We still find new walks the community woodbring one of the ones we have been meaning to do and actually did this year. The Pier cafe at Lairg does not look very welcoming from the outside but we were recommended to visit and wow, never judge a book by its cover. The views from inside were amazing as was the food worth a visit.
    Mrs Taylor-reid - October 2016
We have stayed at the Gate Lodge for many years with our dogs. It is well appointed, clean, cosy and warm - ideal for getting away from it all without being isolated. The reason for only four stars: Although we do not wish to spend time on the internet it would be an advantage to have WiFi for email. (Over the years there has been a great deal of self seeding on and around the drive - we used to be able to see the hill, but no longer. Would it be possible to reduce this as it is beginning to encroach on the drive?)
Mr And Mrs Stenhouse - September 2016
The cottage is nice with a comfortable living room and plenty of space. For people who want to spend a few days offline its a good place to be, as there is no WIFI and no signal coverage for the cell phone. Situated in a little forest and closed to plenty of rivers it is a really good starting point for walks out in nature.
    Mrs Tardo - July 2016
Beautiful house, perfectly clean, with everything we needed, on a beautiful landscape, and very calm.
    Mr Vincent - June 2016
Very good cottage. Very happy with our stay. Note no kitchen basics at all left ie salt or oil. No phone signal and no wifi. If get wifi will 100% go back here.
    Dr Targett - June 2016
Overall we had a fantastic time in Gate Lodge. The house was very clean and it was great to have the log fire ready to light when we arrived. I think you should add more to description in terms of the well equipped kitchen as this was an excellent surprise to us. We have been to villas abroad with a well known and generally expensive villa company and you have to buy everything from toilet roll to bin bags when you arrive. I did take basics with me from home but it was a great surprise that there was, tea, coffee, sugar, kitchen foil, cling film, kitchen roll, matches ,wash up liquid, the list could go on, in fact everything you could need initially and every kitchen tool you could ever imagine-even a blender! The highlight for us and our 9 year old daughter was the deer coming down from the hills every night just right behind the house-amazing and a beautiful sight to see. Our only criticism would be the mattress in the double room which has seen better days and if you could provide better directions to the house in your final e mails ( we think you may have provided initially but could not find when we needed it), the entrance for the car is along the road a little from the house and when you turn it looks like you are going into a field, so we thought we had the wrong place. Oh forgot to say the woods behind the house was great for the dog and our daughter running about safely and someone has carved big toadstools out of the old trees ,so our daughter thought it looked like a magical woods. We will definitely return at some point and use it again as a base for visiting all the beautiful beaches around the north, well worth a trip to Balnakiel beach and Cocoa Mountain a chocolate shop that sells to die for Hot chocolate, great after a walk on the beach. We would definitely recommend this house.
    Miss Hepburn - April 2016
Very well equipped cottage and in a lovely location. The only thing lacking that would make it 5 star was WIFI!
    Mrs Osborn - April 2016
We have stayed at Gledfield Gate Loge before and once again it has not failed to captivate us with its magical charm. Again the standard of presentation and cleanliness was first class. A new mattress on the double bed would be appreciated! We will return.
    Mrs Taylor-reid - October 2015
We have stayed at the Gate Lodge over several years now. Each time we look forward to it and it has never disappointed us. It is well appointed, always spotlessly clean and warm. It is rather like having a second home in the Highlands.
Mr And Mrs Stenhouse - September 2015
House very confortable for a familly of 4. Good position for forest walks and visiting the differentes beautifull beaches (Dornoch).
    Mr Nicolas - August 2015
What a fantastic lodge with everything you need for a comfortable stay in a beautiful and quiet location, but close enough to shops and restaurants in Bonar Bridge, Tain and Dornoch. Amazing scenery and such welcoming locals. The perfect solution for a stress free holiday. Will definately return to Gledfield Gate Lodge.
    Mrs Hagan - July 2015
The house had everything that we needed as well as the quiet and peaceful location. Great walking without having to get into the car. The house was well equipped and well cleaned. The heating system kept the house at a constant comfortable temperature.
    Mr Arbuthnot - July 2015
Excellent accommodation, very clean, heating very efficient, very well equipped. Situated in a quiet spot. Only drawbacks some way from shops and restaurants but you can't have it both ways! Lack of internet connection a minor inconvenience. The approach from the road is via a track to the rear of the property accessed some 80 yds further down the road. Could do with some signage.
    Mr Tod - June 2015
We were very impressed with Gledfield Gate Lodge from the moment we drove up the short track. A lovely setting, incredibly peaceful, we rarely saw another soul and only heard the very occasional car or tractor going passed the single track road. The lodge itself was very comfortable and clean, and the facilities were excellent, the kitchen was absolutely superb. Though it seemed small on the outside, it was actually quite spacious inside. One small improvement would be heavier curtains in the bedrooms as it was very bright very early at this time of year! However, we would definitely stay there again. We would recommend the Crannag Bistro locally, and for walking the trails around Loch Migdale were stunning. Dornoch is also a lovely town for exploring.
    Mr Webster - May 2015
A comfortable cottage with a well equipped kitchen. Good riverside walk on the doorstep. While we were there the weather forecast was better for the west (brilliant sunshine) than for the east (overcast), so we drove over to Stac Pollaidh one day and Cul Mor the next day - only about an hour's drive. I would only make one suggestion for improvement and that is to have a few more books/games/paper/the odd pen. We had a really great meal at the Crannag Bistro in Bonar Bridge - excellent food especially the cheese souffle with chilli, and good conversation with the owner. We got a taxi there (taxi number and landline phone in the cottage) and walked back in the gloaming.
    Ms Ambler - April 2015
This was a revisit and already booked for 2015. The Cranag Bistro in Bonar Bridge. Kathy and Ian Smith our wonderful hosts and the food is out of this world well worth a visit or two or three!
    Mrs Taylor-reid - October 2014
The Gate Lodge is very well equipped for a comfortable stay. The surrounding area is perfect for walking, golf, mountain biking and fishing and is suitable for all ages.
Mr And Mrs Stenhouse - June 2014
We have stayed at Gledfield several times. Firstly it was chosen as it is only a mile or so from my sons. The cottage is well appointed and the only thing that I would wish to add is WiFi. Surrounding areas are superb for walking - or golf if that way inclined. The Crannog restaurant in Bonar Bridge is an excellent place to dine also The Quay in Dornoch. Shopping locally at the Kyle Bakery (Spar now) and a good butcher, again in Bonar Bridge. It does not matter at what time of year there is always something to delight the soul.
Mr And Mrs Stenhouse - October 2013
Once again the lodge was in immaculate condition with all resources that one could want in the kitchen- the house was spotless and very well kept and we thoroughly enjoyed our time again at Gledfield- well done to the team that keep this property hopefull we shall be back in October
    Mr Thomson - April 2013
I only stayed a short time as there was problem with boiler so they relocated me. Hilda could not have been more helpful and we fell in love with Carron Cottage will be back next Xmas for sure. I loved the Lodge it was perfect and had everything one could possibly want and more. Excellant value for money and I would recommend either cottage to anyone. Carron is just home from home and the scenery in both places breathtaking so much to see and do. Peace and quiet, sheer bliss.
    Mrs Macdonald - December 2011
This is the third time we have stayed at Gledfield and found everything top quality Hilda Buchanan(keys) was as usual very helpful and the cottage was still as good as ever very clean with all kitchen requirements and I would and have thoroughly recommended this property Regards to all the staff involved Allan
    Mr Thomson - October 2011
We have stayed in a lot of cottages and this one has to be one of the best. Hilda the caretaker gave us a really nice welcome. The cottage was spotless and had everything you could wish for in a holiday home. It was lovely and warm, which was a bit of a shame as I would have lit the fire! My husband really appreciated having sky for the TV.
    Mr Burnett - August 2011
We really enjoyed our stay at Gledfield gate lodge and would return without any hestitation. The cottage was modern and immaculate with everything you could possibly need. Beautiful location with rabbits and deer on your doorstep. You will need your own transport as it's quite far from most things. Plenty of fantastic walks in the area.
    Ms Claxton - August 2011
The cottage was in very good order, spotless, and with good specification. I had expected two bathrooms but must have misread the particulars. Good value.
    Mr Lacey - August 2011
Extremely well equipped cottqage . The kitchen has to be one of the best equipped I have ever stayed in. The log fire was a welcome attraction -even though the cottage is extremely well heated without it. The location was perfect for day trips to Tongue and Ullapool , Unapool , Durnoch and Dunrobin Castle .The setting for the cottage itself is lovely -rural and peaceful with deer, rabbits and pheasants a plenty but not far from the shops at Bonar Bridge for supplies. All in all we were very happy with our choice and would recommend it highly.
    Mrs Paterson - June 2011
Really well appointed and comfortable cottage in fantastic location.
    Miss Clark - April 2011
Second stay at Gledfield Lodge, excellent, very clean and tidy home. Wwonderful place to stay.
    Ms Mcpherson - April 2011
Having been to this accommodation before we were again NOT disappointed - the accommodation is lovely, very clean and has everything that one could expect in 2011. Literature available is very good and the process of booking and administration was first class we would thoroughly recommend this accommodation for 2- 4 people and would hope to return ourselves in the future.
    Mr Thomson - April 2011
A very well appointed cottage in a lovely location. Very helpful staff from the Estate.
Mrs Llewellyn Stenhouse - March 2011
Everything that you could need and of good quality. Walking distance from village but not much there. Would recommend to anyone who just wanted to chill but not if you wanted spectacular scenery or touristy activities. Quite a long way from anywhere worthy of note. therefore quite expensive.
    Mrs Ingham - July 2010
