    Grenrof reviews
We had a wonderful holiday, on a beautiful island. The property was well situated, with large rooms. We had a few niggles, many of which have been mentioned by other people, for example - the patio outside the back door needed weeding; there were pots of very dead plants on the patio - if there are going to be plants in pots outside, they must be looked after. The garden in general needed weeding, although the grass had recently been cut. There were some cleaning issues - for example, some of the glasses were dirty. As was mentioned in another review, there were some non-stick pans which had no non-stick, although there were also new pots, which were absolutely fine. The hoover clearly did not reach under the bed and behind the sitting room tv. We felt that the house needed some tlc - for example, there was a note beside one of the windows in the conservatory saying that we should not open it; and all the kick boards in the kitchen fell over on a regular basis. It would have been helpful to have a file detailing, for example, how the various kitchen appliances worked, the arrangements for rubbish (rather than having them stuck on the wall), the wall switch for the shower; and some tourist information of nearby places. Having said all that, we did have a wonderful holiday, and we really liked the property.
    Mrs Grant - May 2019
Everything about this cottage was very good, the only downside was the unclean oven. I don't really want to clean up after other people on my holiday! The cottage is spacious, the conservatory a great sun trap.
    Mr Henry - May 2019
On arrival we spent one hour cleaning kitchen work tops and all the floors. This is the fourth time we have stayed in this home, no problem on the other visit. Enjoyed a few nice meals out in local restaurants especially steak night at Felicity’s.
Owners Response: "Thank you for your comments and we hope to see you again next year"
    Mr Davidson - May 2019
We love Arran and we have stayed at Grenrof on several occasions. On arrival the bungalow was a lot cleaner than last time and the garden looked a lot neater too. kitchen was very well equipped, living room was very cosy and conservatory was lovely to seat in for my morning cup of tea. Beds were comfortable and clean. The only down side was a blockage in the bathroom that made the water drain very slowly in the sink, bath and the toilet would get blocked. Someone did come out to have a look put couldn’t fix the problem and would have to come back, so I’m assuming it was fixed after we left to go home. Having said this I would definitely stay again and it was just one of those things that happen in anyone’s home. I would definitely recommend this holiday let to other people as it’s a lovely place to have a nice family break and is situated in a lovely location. Hope to be back there soon.
    Mr Simpson - April 2019
The reason I gave Grenof 3* instead of 4 was because there were a few issues - the electric socket by the sink where the kettle was plugged in didn't work, I went to open the corner cupboard and the door came away in my hands and the toilet seat was broken, so you had to Ben careful how you sat on it. However once those things are rectified I would stay here again, it was warm, comfortable, plenty of room for two and in an excellent position.
    Mrs Martin - November 2018
Another great stay in Grenrof with some minor comments. The shower is becoming intermittent (possibly the filter needs cleaning) and perhaps a third toilet roll, although we take extra because of past experience
    Mr Pollock - September 2018
Ideal family base. Excellent value for money. Clean, tidy and towels provided. Excellent space with sun room to chill and plenty dvds to choose from of an evening. One of our highlights was watching a hedgehog in the garden one evening! Dishwasher was a big plus as was having a corner bath as well as shower. We also like all the gorgeous art throughout the house.
    Mrs Brown - July 2018
We managed to gain entry at 2pm instead of 4pm- which was a bonus having the kids with us. House contains everything you would absolutely need for your stay. Even beach toys in storage area in kitchen. The only reason I put a 4 instead of 5 stars is we had to clean venetian blinds in the bedrooms as the children are sensitive to dust. I had to use a antibacterial spray to get off. Also had to brush and hoover under main bed and found an old tee shirt and underwear also under it. Overall, it is a brilliant place to stay and handy for amenities and best of all - so peaceful.
    Mr Thomson - July 2018
Lovely property in a very nice situation close to the sea and exactly what we were looking for. We put up the dog travel bed in the hall and our labradoodle was happy there. The family made good use of the pleasant front gardens. The children’s room was large and airy. The rooms had access to TV/WiFi and any problems were dealt with timeously and effectively. I would highly recommend to friends and family.
    Mrs White - June 2018
A.great house but cleaning although ample was really superficial. The back patio AGAIN requires weeding We will be back in September and hopefully next June and hopefully will see some improvement Regards
Owners Response: "Thank you for your review and I have organised for weeding to be done now. Look forward to your returning in September."
    Mr Pollock - June 2018
The bungalow was extremely comfortable and had everything we needed. Perfect location. Excellent value for money. I cannot fault it in any way.
    Mrs Barker - May 2018
3rd time here, that says it all.
    Mr Davidson - April 2018
Our first time at Grenrof and also on Arran. The bungalow was very comfortable and warm. Very close to the tidal beach which the dogs thoroughly enjoyed when the tide was out and although on the south of Arran it was close to Lamlash and Brodick. We enjoyed our visit to Arran Aromatics, Arran Cheese and also the pottery. Sadly Brodick Castle was closed for maintenance/renovation during our visit (March) but we were able to walk around the grounds. Lochranza Castle was also closed. The road closure at North Sannox meant we couldn't drive all around the island but this was due for completion after our visit. We enjoyed a very nice meal in the restaurant at the Lamlash hotel and bought a beautiful painting from the art gallery in Whiting Bay which is well worth a visit.
    Mrs Royle - March 2018
A couple of urgent things to report and some smaller considerations. 1) a piece of flashing on the eaves has come away above the double bedroom. This leaves the roof space exposed to the elements. 2) we became aware of a bad drain smell which has fluctuated perhaps with tides but is present still today. No sign of blockage or problem with water draining but bad smell! No flushing of anything other than toilet paper we promise. The other things we would feedback is that through the passage of time, some items need replaced. The pots and pans are beyond their best : the non stick is flaking off all the saucepans and the frying pan is not non stick anymore . The only large oven proof dish (which we had also to use as a fruit bowl) has a large crack. One of the cafetières is broken and the cooking utensils are a bit lacking. Eg only one wooden spoon. The Seive and colander are rusty and the toilet brush is disgusting. The table mats too have served their time. None of these are big expenses but you may not know about them so we wanted to tell you! It would make a difference to the experience of self catering as Grenrof is such a grand wee house otherwise. We also suggest the douvets are not really winter weight. We were chilly in both rooms and needed lots of doubling up of covers which is not great. The bedding is also a bit tired and thin. The towels were very small and one tea towel is insufficient. We also missed a wee hand blender which are so cheap but improve the soup making no end.
Owners Response: "Thank you for your review and your helpful comments. I will ask my contact on the island to look into the roof and the drain smell immediately. I am going to Grenrof shortly and will replace anything that is needing renewed so all will be in order by mid February. I am glad you did enjoy your stay overall."
    Mrs Milton - December 2017
We had a very nice time at Grenrof, location was fab and house well equiped. Would suit both couple and family holidays. Gardens looked good, however it was a bit too cold for us to take advantage in late Nov. We would return but would remember to take a hairdryer next time.
    Mrs Mclean - November 2017
We had a lovely week staying in Grenrof. The house was clean and warm when we arrived. It is well equipped and provided an excellent base for our stay on Arran. The garden is regularly visited by red squirrels and there are excellent walks nearby.
    Mr Holmes - October 2017
The house was cleaned to a much better standard than last year and the patio was weeded. The house has everything we required for a great holiday and we are booked for two weeks next June and can't wait
    Mr Pollock - September 2017
The house itself was really nice, spacious, good location for touring Arran, big lounge, good dvd selection, good wifi. However, there were a few things that we did not like. First of all, the above (May) mentioned stains and the white marks on the bedsheets (which look really gross - the bedsheets have been washed, but the stains are still there, so it would be advisable to get a new bedsheet!) were still there, together with other signs of a poorly done cleaning job. Secondly, we really missed contact with the owners / company that runs the building. We found a big sign in the kitchen, giving their details (e-mail and phone), for further questions or problems. At the very first day, I contacted them with a minor issue: I could not find a hairdryer in the whole house! We've been to many self-catering cottages and they all provided one, so I did not double check before we booked if there was one, so was disappointed when there was no hairdryer (and I have really long hair which takes ages to dry), so I simply wanted to ask where it was hidden. No reply to my e-mail, no phone call, nothing. Then we had to realise they did not even reply to major issues: The third day, we noticed (a neighbour made us aware of it) that part of the roof (the side bit) was loose and coming down, so we should not park very close tot he house or the rental car might be damaged. My husband took photos and sent it to them via e-mail, and we thought they might come back to us or arrange for someone to deal with it, but no reply whatsoever. Instead, another person came a few days later and asked where the lamp is that he was supposed to put up in one of the rooms. We were surprised because we did not know of any lamp, nor of somebody due to come (and it was pure coincidence that we were even there, because we were out for most of the days during the days). We did not find the lamp, so the work could not be done. I had another problem when I want to do some ironing. When I found the iron and the ironing board, I noticed that a former tenant must have had a major burn incident, because the iron had some burnt cloth sticking to it underneath, and the ironing board had a bit of cloth missing! Obviously somebody didn't switch it off and left it on the board. So this was not usable. What a shame, because now I had to run round with bad hair AND creased clothes! We told the cleaning people about all this when we left, so maybe something has be done in the meanwhile. This was the first cottage which didn't have a guest book, and maybe it would be a good idea to leave one there AND read it, so the owners would know which things they should fix / avoid in the future. As I said, other than that, the cottage was nice and we did not regret having rented it.
    Mr Weissenberger - July 2017
We loved are stay at grenrof and would definitely stay again. They house was lovely and I enjoyed my morning cup of tea in the conservatory. The children loved their bedroom and enjoyed have a bath every day as we only have a shower at home. The only thing that let the place down was the housekeeping, there was a brown gravy or coffee mark on the cupboard behind the kitchen bin, there was about 30 dead ants in the conservatory which I cleaned up and my daughters bed sheet had white marks on it which I turned around but it did smell clean. Also the windows to the right of the conservatory had marks all over them. All in all this place is a good holiday let but just needs to brush up on there housekeeping.
    Mr Simpson - May 2017
This is a well equipped single level holiday cottage in Whiting Bay. It has everything you would require to live on Arran just the same as you would at home. Excellent kitchen and bathroom facilities and very spacious living areas including a nice bright conservatory at the front. Conservatory is needing a little tlc but that did not spoil our enjoyment of the property or our holiday in any way. Repeat visitor to this property for a good number of years. It is a short (and I mean short) walk to all restaurants, coffee/tea rooms and miscellaneous shops in Whiting Bay. Really good walking opportunities all around. I would recommend it.
    Mrs Thomas - August 2016
Spacious, spotless, plenty dvds to choose from, fabulous bath, excellent location. We had breakfast at Coffee Pot the day we left.Drift Inn and Coast both great for food.Lagg definitely worth a visit also.Dishwasher was a major bonus for me!!Also love the various paintings.
    Mrs Brown - July 2016
Felt so at home the moment we unpacked. Lots of space and absolutely spotless. Everything you could possibly need was supplied.
    Mr Thomson - July 2016
The bungalow was very easy to find and within walking distance of some shops, and only a short drive to Lamlash or Brodick for larger supermarkets. It has lovely walks from the door of the property. The bungalow sits in spacious well maintained grounds and has a very large conservatory from which you can just about see the sea! The rear seating area was very handy. The bungalow was very well equipped with everything you could ask for, and was very clean on arrival. Although the property allowed dog(s) the only enclosed space was the small seating/patio area to the rear. You could easily fit 3 cars on the drive. The excellent shower/bath room looks like it had been recently refurbished and I'm sure that other areas of the house may well follow suite. Missing 'easy start' instructions for the various appliances and other general house/area information. Plenty of games for children and I have never seen so may DVD's and books!! Well done - may use it again.
    Mr White - May 2016
Would have been five star if easier access to dining table from the kitchen. A bit harsh perhaps.
    Mr Morrison - May 2016
Another great visit, ideal location for exploring arran. Local hotel has improved greatly for its food and hospitality. Recommend a visit to the holy Isle, it has been twenty years since our last visit there, the views looking around are stunning.Hope to return next year.
    Mr Davidson - April 2016
we had a fantastic time on Arran, staying at Grenrof. Please pass on our thanks to the owners.
    Mrs Higgins - April 2016
The cottage was in immaculate condition.Plenty games kept the whole family entertained.Children loved having DVD player in their room.Dishwasher made it more of a holiday for me!Excellent location and beautiful furnished. We would definitely recommend.Fantastic price really made it.Thankyou for a great holiday.
    Mrs Brown - July 2015
Quality house and location, well presented and spotlessly clean.
    Mr Pollock - May 2015
A lovely house. Good quality furniture, finished to a high spec. Not a typical rental cottage at all. Not full sea views as there was houses between you and the shore, although you could see the sea. the house is set in mature gardens so there was a feeling of being out in the country. Lots of birds, a rabbit and even a red squirrel to entertain us. When in the house we spent most of our time in the massive conservatory relaxing. There was plenty heating and hot water. I just couldn't fault this house. Loads of books, dvds and games if you wanted them. We didn't use any as it was lovely relaxing in he conservatory. I would stay here again if back in Arran. Whiting Bay is a small village but every village is 10 minutes apart so it is a very handy base,
    Miss Stewart - May 2015
Lovely house, quiet and in a good location
    Mr Davidson - May 2015
Lovely, peaceful bungalow, very clean. excellently equipped with good bedding & towels. Convenient location.. Loads of DVDs & books. Coast restaurant in Whiting Bay excellent. Would book again
    Mr Hallam - August 2014
We stayed at Grenrof for three days/nights, 25-27 August. The house was very clean and comfortable, well-furnished and the location was excellent for our needs, with easy access to the Whiting Bay Beach for our morning and evening dog walks. Having completed a full circuit of the island, my husband and I felt that the Whiting Bay location had been the best choice for us. It is not as big/busy/touristy as Brodick or Lamlash, yet was close to all that is on offer there, and not quite as remote feeling as some of the villages on the south and west side of the island. Whiting Bay had has two good (albeit small) village shops and a few places to eat. We particularly liked the fact that we could start the Glenashdale Falls walk from our cottage, and also take the lovely Kingcross Point walk from just a bit up the road in Whiting Bay. We had several lovely walks, and found this website very useful: One of our favourites (and very easy!) was the Kilmory Shore walk listed under the Lamlash and South Arran section. Two out of our three days my husband went to the Whiting Bay Golf Course just up the road from Grenrof, around 5 pm, and the friendly staff allowed him to play 9 holes for only £5 the first night and £10 the second. I walked the course with him the second evening; the steep greens were fantastic and the views from the top gorgeous. He loved the relaxed atmosphere and having the course to himself! It was definitely one of the highlights of our visit. We had warm, sunny weather all three days, and really enjoyed our first visit to Arran. It was definitely nice to come home to Grenrof and have a bit of space to spread out at the end of the day, as opposed to returning to a hotel room.
    Mrs Siegfried - August 2014
Grenrof still our chosen house in Whiting Bay. Just a little problem this time. Shower screen had lost its rollers on one side of the door, making the door almost impossible to open. We managed however to squeeze through one door !! Someone did call to fix it but as he couldn't find said rollers he was unable to do anything about it. That said it won't stop us from coming back.
    Mrs Thomas - August 2014
WE lleft some feed back re plumbing. toilet difficult to flush wash hand basin and bath plug difficult to operate Could have had a bigger range of dishes and chopping boards
    Mr Gordon - May 2014
Had a great chilled out holiday. House was great and loved location. Whiting Bay very nice and liked being so close to beach. Went to Coast, Eden Lodge and Coffee Pot in our week and thoroughly enjoyed them all - lovely to have them all within walking distance. House was very clean and had everything we needed for our stay. Second time in Arran and would love to return, would book Grenrof again and recommend to friends.
    Mrs Mcmanus - April 2014
Cottage was very comfortable , well equipped and well maintained. A quiet spot on the island but not isolated. We were looking for a relaxing break from work - somewhere to chill out and this cottage allowed us to do just that. We have stayed in this cottage before - so knew what to expect. A gentleman from the Arran Team called to put out refuse bin ( he said he had filled it with packaging from new furniture the day before) and noticed guttering was leaking. He repaired it before leaving - an excellent service.
    Mrs Carrigan - December 2013
This is a very comfortable house, highlight is conservatory which even at this time of year warms up quickly and has beautiful views out to sea, as well as a terrific place to watch birds and red squirrels. It's very handy for local shops and for Coast, an excellent wee restaurant which also does coffee etc during the day. Grenrof is a great centre for exploring the whole of Arran. With mixed weather forecast, we always managed to find part of the island where it would be dry. We had one superb day climbing Goatfell and getting wonderful views - not bad for mid November! Every other day was forecast to be showery, but we walked every day without getting wet at all. We will be back!
    Mr Wardrop - November 2013
excellent cottage, very good value and everything you could need (especially wifi for the teenager!) short walk to beach for the dog, Arran is a very special and peaceful place and i love it!
    Mrs Whittaker - October 2013
Good location in Whiting Bay, a few minutes only from the beach. Five minutes from the golf club. The beach is great for walking the dog. Plenty of good local walks. Good shops and cafes all within five minutes walk. All points of interest on the island within around half an hour's drive
    Mr Myers - August 2013
Lovely modern bungalow, very well equipped in a great location.
    Miss Knox - June 2013
Very comfortable house, walking distance to shops, pub and restaurant, and ideal for walks to Glenashdale Falls and Giants' Graves. Conservatory looking out over the sea is a lovely feature, ideal for wet weather relaxing and bird watching from the house!
    Mr Wardrop - December 2012
Good house but could do with a little TLC. A few complaints- gas fire and one of the heaters not working. No surfaces in double bedroom (a bit annoying)
    Miss Affleck - September 2012
Grenrof was a lovely place to stay, well situated and very comfortable with all amenities. Arran is a lovely island, with lots to see. It was just a shame that the weather was against us but that's the chance you take in Scotland! The Old Pier cafe in Lamlash offers lovely homemade food with nice people to welcome you and Bilsands in Brodick is also a good place for lunch. Lovely gift shops included Bunty's and Jolly Molly in Brodick and The Curtain House in Lamlash. And of course a holiday on Arran isn't complete without a visit to Arran Arromatics. Both trips on the Cal Mac ferry were excellent and the staff were very helpful and nice.
    Mrs Madeley - September 2012
Grenrof is a fantastic house that is just needing a wee bit of a refurbishment. i.e. new blinds and some replacement crockery. It still won't stop me going there again as we love Arran and especially Whiting Bay.
    Mrs Thomas - August 2012
Grenrof felt like home instantly. Immaculately clean, spacious and better equipped than our own home! We were very pleasantly surprised to find it well stocked with everything from tea towels, first aid kit, candles, fairy liquid, sugar and even a wide selection of family DVD's and books!!! Private and quite location within minutes walk from coffee shop, general store, post office and bar lounge.....and only 15 minutes drive from the Brodick Ferry. We are already talking about booking Grenrof for next year. Hopefully for 2 weeks not 1!!!!
    Mrs Lyon - July 2012
Very nice place to stay. Good location, only a few minutes walk from the beach which is excellent for those with dogs (ours particularly enjoyed jumping off the jetty into the sea and going for a swim!). Only slight criticism is that the mattress was too firm (I'd go so far as to use the word "hard"), but I accept this is a matter of personal taste. Lots to do on Arran, we particularly enjoyed the archery session (good value with the with 2-for-1 voucher in the booklet), the distillery visit and the powerboat trip round the Holy Isle, up to Brodick and then back to Lamlash (from Ocean Breeze Rib Tours) The Eden Lodge pub/hotel at the end of the road was also very nice - good pub lunches and space to sit outside with the dogs.
    Mr Foster - July 2012
As always we enjoyed our stay. A couple of points- bath plug, curtain hooks. The tv in the double bedroom now takes up the only dressing table space there was.
    Mrs Gold - July 2012
We are ex islanders holidaying on the island and looking up `old` friends.
    Mrs Benson - May 2012
Lovely cottage in Whiting Bay, within sight and sound of the sea. Breakfast outside on the front porch in the sun every day, evening meals in the sun outside the back door - Arran at its best. Good roomy house - not that we spent much time in it. Why 3 tellies? Who wants to go to Arran and watch TV? Good to be somewhere that encourages recycling, with clear guidance on what goes where. Excellent Coffee Pot cafe just a few yards away, while Coast is a lovely small restaurant less than 10 minutes walk away - booking definitely recommended! Good bus service to other parts of Arran - bus stop just a few yards away.
    Mr Wardrop - May 2012
The accommodation was to a high standard and ideally suited to our family of 4 including two young teenage girls plus our pet dog Ben (Golden Retriever). The cottage is close to the beach and ideal for regular walks with Ben. Coast Cafe & Bistro is well worth a visit (which we did a couple of times) and we were also delighted with their recent innovation of carry out fish suppers which you phone to pre-order and collect at an agreed time. Great when you've had a hard day climbing Goat Fell and just wish to relax in the evening.
    Mr Cuthbert - March 2012
The property has been furnished to a high standard. Clean and welcoming on arrival. Easy access to the shore front at Whiting Bay.
    Mr Kyle - October 2011
This property is very spacious and furnished to a high standard. It has excellent views and is in a quiet location with the village centre within walking distance. It is very pet friendly and good value for money. We had a fabulous weekend there and will definately go back.
    Miss Meikle - September 2011
A very quiet cottage with a great sun porch. Handy for pub and shops. Really good walks right from the door. Crossed to Holy Island and enjoyed walk there. If we ever go back we'll go over in the morning and walk right over the hill. There are so many things to do on Arran we wished we had stayed for a fortnight instead of a week. Iain and Jan Martin, Monifieth, Dundee.
    Mrs Martin - August 2011
Perfect property in a good location. Plenty of kitchen equipment for people who do not want to eat out all the time. In fact, I have never come across such a well fitted kitchen in any other properties we have rented over the last 30 plus years. The lounge furniture is wonderfully comfortable. The TV is a good size for those of us who are a bit sight challenged! Loads of books and videos. The property was very clean and easy to keep that way. All in all I cannot think of any negatives. Oh, except maybe there should be a small fire extinguisher or fire blanket in the kitchen - unless there was and we did not see it.
    Mrs Willson - May 2011
The property was spacious and clean on the inside when we arrived. However it was our opinion the outside of the property could've been maintained better. It was obvious that everyone used the back door to come & go and as a result the front door and patio door were stiff to use. Like everyone else we used the backdoor. This was fine once we made arrangements for the outside light to be repaired. As my mother who was with us was a little infirm it would've been better if this had been checked before our arrival. On the plus side the repair was made the same day we reported it. As the cottage is not used every week it was apparent that the bins were not emptied every week. As we were requested we put out the bin that was due whist were there but again it was not pleasent that neither of the bins were empty when we arrived. If the the cottage is empty in any week then arrangements to put out the bin should be made. The view was not as good as made out in the brochure but if you were standing in the conservatory it was excellent. Overall a very enjoyable stay and was what we wanted a base to tour the island.
    Mrs Learmouth - October 2010
A great base to visit Arran from. Quiet, well equipped and comfortable. We spent the majority of our time when at the house in the wonderful, spacious and bright conservatory. All of Whiting Bay is easily reached on foot. We would easily go back the next time.
