Rarely do you have the opportunity to enjoy such a stunning location in so much comfort and style - Lochside House is superbly positioned on the shoreline of beautiful Loch Leven and surrounded by some of the most magnificent scenery that Scotland, and a holiday in Fort William, has to offer.

Inside this spacious home, the interiors are creative, stylish and uncluttered allowing you to truly relax and get away from it all. The welcoming fully equipped kitchen, with its large table and smart slate floor, is perfect for holiday dining and the main sitting room has a calm restful atmosphere with large glass sliding doors that open out onto the terrace and shoreline allowing you to enjoy summer evenings and beautiful sunsets. The three delightful bedrooms are fresh and luxurious with comfy beds and crisp linen and the bathrooms contemporary and stylish. But the real surprise comes when you discover the upstairs sitting room – this wonderful room with its double height ceiling, wood panelling and endless glass creates a mountain chalet feel. From here you can enjoy the continually changing light and colours across the magical landscape and marvel at the amazing variety of birds and wildlife that live around the shoreline.

Return home to this charming holiday house after an exhilarating day spent exploring this magical part of Scotland and enjoy a relaxing soak in the fabulous double-ended bath before sinking into the deep sofa and warming your feet by the wood burning stove. Heaven.

Lochside House is positioned on what was once part of the historic and famous Ballachulish slate quarry where slabs of slate would be taken by tram to the shoreline and split to the required thickness. Still standing around the immediate shoreline is a fascinating collection of slate workers’ boat houses and sheds dating back to the 1860s.

    Lochside House reviews
A beautiful house with a beautiful view of Loch Leven, with beautiful mountains. Everything was perfect in this location and inside the house. The kitchen is AMAZING, not cooking in it at least once is an insult to the kitchen! It had everything we could possibly think of. The Co-Op in Ballachulish is a five minute drive away and it has everything you could possibly need for a good meal. The showers and bath are excellent, the beds comfortable, the TV downstairs has Netflix on it, many DVD's, many books (including Harry Potter books), many boardgames and endless peace and beauty.
    Mrs Ernst - July 2019
An excellent house to stay at. This was our second visit and would highly recommend a stay. The house has all you would need and the beds are really comfortable. It’s located in an ideal place to explore.
    Miss Hayhurst - June 2019
This property is set in a stunning location and provides high quality accommodation. It is equipped to a high standard and provides an ideal base for exploring the western highlands. Places visited during our visit were The Nevis Range Centre, Fort William, Easdale from where you can take a Seafari, Neptunes Staircase, Mallaig via the Jacobite Express and The Eilean Donan Castle. You don't have to venture very far for local water sports or outdoor activities. I cannot recommend this property highly enough.
    Mrs Smith - May 2019
From the moment we entered to the moment we left we were in awe of the location and the views and the house felt cosy and warm. Fixtures and fittings are excellent and as already mentioned for a large house the heating was more than adequate when those chiller nights happen. We will no doubt be back for more!
    Mr Wilcox - May 2019
Lochside House is really special. Words can’t do it justice so, go see it for yourself!
    Mrs Holmes - April 2019
Wonderfully Magical Views!!!!! We really enjoyed our stay. The house is absolutely beautiful and the views are GORGEOUS!!!!!!
    Mr Cotter - September 2018
The moment you walk into the lounge you know you are going to have a great stay at Lochside house. This house is exceptionally well presented and we found it perfect for our party of 6. It felt like a home from home. The kitchen is a delight to use. We were lucky enough to see a seal swimmimg in the loch which was a true delight. You never get bored with the constant changing landscape viewed from both lounges. I would definitely stay in this property again and would highly recommend it to family and friends.
    Mr Chapman - September 2018
The house is fantastic. It offers space for everyone: bedrooms and bathrooms. The kitchen is well equipped, as hobby-cook we enjoyed the big gas stove and the ovens. We especially liked the view from the house, the big windows make the house light even in bad weather. The water is so close and the tide can been observed as much as many sea birds. The flowers in the garden offer home to many birds. Although the house is close to the village, it is really quiet. The cries of the seagulls are the only sounds to hear. We travelled around in the area, we especially liked the Blencoe-Valley which is "just round the corner". There are very nice hikes. In Fort William, we took a ride with the Jacobite Steam Train (The Harry Potter Train) and visited Neptun's Staircase. Driving South, we visited the seal sanctuary, Oban and Inveraray. If you don't mind to drive a little longer (1,5h+), you can go to many places such as Loch Ness and even to the Isle of Skye. In July and August, there are Highland Games on different places around.
    Mr Ermatinger - July 2018
This is a lovely, comfortable house in a fabulous location. The views over Loch Leven from both lounges upstairs and downstairs are stunning. The house is tucked away in a very quiet, peaceful area, but within walking distance of Ballachulish Co-op, also Glencoe village. Excellent for anyone who wants to retreat for a while from everyday hustle and bustle. The house is well equipped and kept in lovely condition. There is a resident heron yards from the window. We watched him regularly. The Seaxplorer 2 hour fast boat trip from Ballachulish was great. We saw many different gulls, cormorants, oyster catchers, wild black sheep and seals. On board we heard about some local history, learned about the burial islands and heard some local legends. For lunches and cakes we recommend Crafts and Things in Glencoe. Best Ploughman’s lunch ever! For evening meals we recommend the Clachaig Inn which is in Glencoe, a few miles out of the village.
    Mrs Mathew - June 2018
Lochside House is an amazing property to stay at, it’s decorated superbly throughout and has everything you will need for a fantastic stay. The views over the loch are amazing and it’s situated in an ideal location to explore, whilst there we visited Loch Ness, Dornie, Fort William and we were lucky enough to get tickets on the day on The Jacobite Train to Mallaig. I would highly recommmend a stay at Lochside House and we will definitely be returning for a second stay.
    Miss Hayhurst - June 2018
Wonderful place with wonderful views as Loch Leven is at the bottom of the garden , it felt remote but it was only a few hundreds yards from the road. We were very lucky with the weather as everywhere else seemed to have loads of snow except us. Masses of things to do so we’re already trying to find time to go up to discover Syke and Mull. The house was very well maintained, very clean and the facilities were outstanding. We have already recommended it to family and friends. So thank you for letting us stay in your lovely home.
    Mrs Needham - March 2018
Not a bad thing to stay about Loch Side House . Clean comfortable spectacular views . We saw otters , seals sea birds it was fantastic. The house is amazing every thing geared to the views. Highly recommend to any one we went in February it rained and snowed every day but it didn't matter the view from the house just got better. Lovely Fort William is just down the road which was all we needed. We will definately be returning. Wendy and Derrick Cobden
    Mrs Cobden - February 2018
The six of us from Alberta had a magical week in Lochside cottage. The house was spotless and well stocked. The rooms were a great size and the beds where comfortable. Having three bathrooms was great. We loved sitting in the living room during the morning having our coffee while watching the sky and tides change. We would all rent Lochside the next time we come back to Scotland. Thank you for a wonderful week!
Mrs Murray Woo - September 2017
Fantastic and well kept cottage, we had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday here and would 100% recommend it to others. Although we didn't get the best weather, as a base for exploring the area, the location was fantastic and it was always a pleasure to come back to the cottage on an evening after a day's adventure. The cottage was well maintained with excellent facilities, the only recommendation to the owners I would make would be to put in blackout blinds to the rear windows in the master bedroom as we found it difficult to sleep as it never seemed to get totally dark.
    Mrs Jagger-strangeway - July 2017
Lochside House exceeded our already high expectations. The interior decor was very stylish with quality furniture and fittings and immaculate presentation. Every detail had been thought of from all that was needed in the kitchen, to an extensive range of games and CDs. The beds were very comfortable with crisp linen. he views from all the windows of Loch Leven and the surrounding mountains were stunning and the garden leading down to the loch was idyllic, whether cloudy or sunny. The choice of an upstairs carpeted chalet-type sitting-room with picture windows or the downside flagstone-floored room with patio doors onto the lake-side garden was great, with TV in both, though rarely watched! We were so comfortable that often reluctant to leave the house and looked forward to coming back "home". The area is very tranquil and seems remote, though within easy walking distance of Ballachulish village with Co-op, visitor centre/cafe/gift-shop, pubs, v good fish and chip shop and even GP surgery.
    Ms Tolson - July 2016
This is without the most luxurious and comfortable accommodation we have ever stayed in. If you combine this with the amazing location of the property with breathtaking views of Loch Leven and surrounding countryside you have an unbeatable combination. Every little detail was thought out from the kitchen equipment, to the design of the windows that allowed you to gaze out on to the environs with maximum effect. We would happily come back here again
    Mr Brenner - June 2016
This was our 4th stay at Lochside in 8 years and it won't be our last, roll on 2018! Without doubt this is one of the best holiday lets we have ever stayed in everything you need and the can you describe that view. Our friends who come with us occasionally (we are very selfish about Lochside and like to keep it for ourselves) just stand mesmerised when they enter the lounge, one burst into tears! Rebecca does a fine job in keeping everything ship shape and sparkling, many thanks. Nice to see the sofas upstairs have been recovered since our last visit. Would suggest just a couple of hopefully constructive comments: 1. really need more than one hand towel and one bath towel per person for a weeks stay. 2. think that the upstairs TV is due for an upgrade (there are some times when you want to watch the telly not often but just sometimes) As I said and in the immortal words of one Arnie S ...........'We'll be back!' Robert
    Mr Springett - May 2016
Lochside House was everything we could have asked for in a vacation home. The location is beautiful and very convenient for exploring the area. The house is very well equipped with all that you should need. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We particularly enjoyed our dinner at the Holly Tree Hotel. The food was wonderful! In fact, the food everywhere we ate was delicious! I can hardly wait for my next trip to Scotland. We will surely rent from Cottages and Castles again! Great customer service.
    Ms Owens - April 2016
Beautiful location and equiped with the best of everything.
    Mr Tudor - March 2016
There's very little negative I can write about Lochside House, having stayed in a lot of rental accommodation (UK and Abroad) it certainly stands out as being the best to date. Location wise it's fantastic IF you're looking for a quiet retreat with excellent views. The house itself it very well appointed and feels welcoming and homely. The quality of finish and decor in all the rooms is of a very high quality and superbly well maintained. The view from the sitting room out onto the Loch is spectacular, as is the 1st Floor Sitting room with provide virtually 180Degree visibility of your surroundings. We spent a great deal of time in the house itself, just enjoying the views, wandering around outside or popping into Ballachulish village for a coffee or lunch at the excellent Cafe / Tourist information centre. The local Co-Op also provides pretty much all of what you may need to sustain your stay. There is quite a lot to do in the surrounding area if you're using Lochside House a base, including walks (all levels) shopping, restaurants, skiing etc. We took a drive over to The House of Bruar, located 10miles north of Pitlochory just off the A9. This passing through some spectacular scenery, culminating in an enjoyable browse around all the stores, cafe etc. at the House of Bruar. There are also a few little cafes en route which also sell arts and crafts; well worth a visit. All in all a superb stay at Lochside House which I'd have no hesitation recommending to anyone.
    Mr Lea - February 2016
House was clean and kept in good condition. Since last time some items that needed replacement were replaced. Views are fabulous, location very central and privacy is guaranteed. Caretaker Rebecca is an asset.
Mr Van Mourik - October 2015
We had a superb holiday at this wonderful house in such a spectacular setting. Add to this the fact that we had the best weather in 50 years of holidaying in the Scottish Highlands and you have the making of the perfect holiday. Additionally, the house is easy to find and conveniently located in Ballachulish, with a very well stocked Co Op store within walking distance, together with an excellent pub and restaurant. There is so much to see and do in the area I am sure we will return again.
    Mr Macdonald - September 2015
It was the best vacation house we have ever been to We could have stayed there the whole summer. The views from the window are wonderful  and the house was clean, designed and well functioned
Mr Manor Ben Zion - August 2015
This was our second stay at Lochside House - we had to come back again because we liked it so much the first time. The views are stupendous, and there's so much to do nearby.
    Mr Colston - July 2015
What a wonderful week at Lochside House, we wanted for nothing! The standard of this property is excellent and it was SO comfortable. The views however have to be the best aspect of this property both from the downstairs lounge and the upstairs room.
    Mr Tilley - May 2015
Lochside House is a wonderful property right on the edge of Loch Leven, the views up and down the loch are nothing short of stunning. We were a family of four and could quite happily have spent all day admiring the views from the living room or the upstairs 'conservatory', however there was too much to do and places to go so this was one luxury we denied ourselves! The house itself is really well equipped, clean and comfortable, it felt like home within minutes of arrival. We had a minor problem with the heating which was sorted out quickly and with the minimum of fuss. There's so much to see and do. North, east, south or west of the property, the scenery is amazing. The west coast is only around an hour away and Fort William/Ben Nevis around 20 minutes. Glencoe ski resort (great for sledging) is also only 20 minutes away, so the house is superbly positioned. I could go on waxing lyrical but I won't. In summary, we couldn't recommend this house enough and will definitely be returning.
    Mr Fuller - December 2014
The house is wonderful and the second floor is spectacular. You have the feeling to stand over the water
    Mr Heck - June 2014
Loch side House is in a beautiful and tranquil location with superb views of Loch Leven and the surrounding hills. It is conveniently placed for Glencoe, Fort William and Ben Nevis. The house itself is excellent providing lovely accommodation. We loved our stay and will definitely back soon.
    Mrs Cook - June 2014
Our second visit to Lochside in two years and most definitely not our last . After our first visit I mentioned what I thought would be a few (constructive) comments all of which have been addressed by the owners, well done indeed. Quite honestly I cannot for the life of me think of one single criticism this time round. Oh, ok if I'm pushed maybe a re-siting of the wifi router (presently on the fridge) to somewhere more central in order that you get complete coverage throughout the house. The signal kept fading in and out when using various wifi enabled thingies whilst in the upstairs lounge. BUT that is only a very minor criticism and cannot or does not reduce the five star experience that you will enjoy at Lochside. We have stayed in similarly priced establishments but none of them have the WOW factor that you get when you first enter Lochside and discover those fabulous views. A very big commendation to Rebecca for providing a real quality place and as the great Mr Arnie S says 'we shall be back!'
    Mr Springett - May 2014
Having stayed at quite a few properties in Scotland booking each time with Cottages and Castles, this property surpassed everything we have ever stopped at it the past. It will be very difficult to improve on perfection which best describes Lochside House. The standard and attention to detail in the property leaves no stone unturned, everything you could hope or wish for is supplied and to an exceptionally high standard. Even the detail of filling the bird feeders before we arrived allowing us the pleasure of watching the birds up close for the full week without having to do anything. The exterior trees/bushes are all trimmed in order that you keep an uninterrupted view at all times. It will be very difficult to find anything to equal or better this property and hopefully we will return again in the years to come.
    Mrs Warhurst - April 2014
Cottage is in a fantastic location with plenty of things to do especially if you enjoy walking. There are plenty of wildlife around as well such as otters, herrons, deers and plenty more. The cottage is well equipped with things to do for all ages. We'll definitely be coming back, enjoyed the peace and quiet, and of course gazing at the beautiful views from the cottage.
    Mrs Ross - April 2014
We have stayed in many lovely rented cottages over the years, but Lochside House really is the crème de la crème for location and the way it has been furnished. We arrived in the evening when it was dark, so when we awoke in the morning to the most amazing scenery it took our breaths away. Ideally situated for day trips or just going for walks. It must be considered one of the most beautiful areas in Scotland. You will not be disappointed if you book this cottage.
    Mrs Little - November 2013
I came into this wonderful house and was speechless! I can only say, that its absolutely worth it! The view out of the windows in the upstairs living room or when you wake up in the morning-beautiful Loch Leven or the Pap of Glencoe...! If you want seclusion for your holiday or many opportunities to walk, mountainbike or whatever-BOOK THIS HOUSE! I will definetely return!!
    Mrs Herber - August 2013
We were all delighted with our stay at Lochside House. It is in the most idyllic location, and has the best view we've ever had from a holiday house. The owner has set up the house for visitors with great thought and care, and was really helpful throughout. It is an extremely comfortable, very well-equipped house, and we were all really sorry to leave. The beds are super-comfortable, too!
    Mrs Colston - August 2013
Wonderful location by the side of the loch with magnificent views. Very comfortable and so well equipped. Lots to see and do in the area. Would particularly recommend Paddle Lochaber next door for kayaking around the very loch you look out on, and hired a rowing boat also next door at the Lochaber Watersports boat hire - the people there were great and it was really enjoyable. Thrillseekers should head to Vertical Descents outside Fort William (at Inchree Falls) - did canyoning and white water rafting. For eating out - Clachaig Inn was good, as was the Glencoe Gathering down the road. A fantastic family holiday. Thank you.
    Mrs Barrett - July 2013
beautiful house to stay in with stunning surroundings. Very comfortable and well equiped with everything you need. Good area, a lot of good walking on the doorstep.
    Mrs Birkett - April 2013
Just sit back and look at the view. You so close to the Loch that you feel you have it all to yourself. A very relaxing house. Well located for Fort William. The local walks are good. The wild life around the house are interesting. The only negative is the Internet is non-existent but the are good phone links. I would love to return.
Owners Response: "We have changed our ISP and now have a good Internet service."
    Mr Ryder - September 2012
We spent a fantastic 2 weeks in Lochside cottage. It was an idyllic place to stay with stunning views from every window. The area was stunning and there was plenty to do whether you want an action packed holiday or a peaceful break. This place is great for either. We would highly recommend the white water rafting with Vertical Descents who are based at Onich on the A82 going towards Fort William, we had a brilliant afternoons fun on the river at Invergarry. The only thing i would say is that there DEFINATELY needs to be some darker blinds over the roof windows above the bed in the master bedroom as when the daylight arrives your day starts. I really missed a few good lie-ins. Also it was a shame the patio doors leading off the downstairs lounge weren't working but hopefully this will be rectified soon. I would definately go back, the views were so worth it and each time you looked out of the window it was different.
    Mr Pateman - July 2012
What a wonderful time we had at Lochside House, couldn't fault a thing. The house caters for your every need, so peaceful! Ballachulish is a hive of activity lots to see and do, would recommend the Sea Explorer trip it was fab! We also went to Loch Leven Seafood restaurant, would highly recommend it! Took the Jacobite train from Fort William to Mallaig, lovely scenery. All in all a wonderful holiday, rained a couple of days which gave us an excuse to stay in the house and enjoy the most spectacular views from up stairs lounge. Plan to visit again!
    Miss Baird - July 2012
A lovely house that makes the most of this fabulous location. Idealy situated to allow you to enjoy the wonderful scenery and spectacular wild life.
    Mrs Cull - June 2012
Lochside House is an excellent holiday let. Where it is situated cannot be faulted and overall I would say it just about lives upto its' five star rating but..........there are one or two areas that I feel could be improved and hopefully these will be taken as constructive criticisms. 1. TV if it states that there is satelite 'Sky TV' then it should really be included. The tvs in both lounges could only receive terestrial channels which is far less than you get on 'freeview or freesat'. I know it's a minor point but bearing in mind the weather sometimes you have to stay indoors. Both tvs are also rather old esp. the one downstairs. I would suggest that the owners invest in a new HDLED for upstairs and move the one upstairs to the downstairs lounge and get the 'Skye' box fixed so there are an adequate number of cahannels available. 2. Some maintenance is required on the patio doors otherwise they will soon become inoperative. 3. As has been stated before by another reviewer there really does need to be some sort of blackout/blind in the master bedroom. Forewarned we took eye masks but a simple solution is for blinds to be fitted to the inner double doors. 4. The cooker in the kitchen is also due for some maintenance especially with the fan oven...not a big problem to fix. I hope these comments will be taken in the manner in which they have been written Lochside House is a very enjoyable place to stay and I shall certainly reccomend it, if these few 'criticisms' were to be couldn't be faulted!
Owners Response: "Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate guests letting us know when things in the house are no longer working or need improving.  We have fitted blackout blinds to the doors in the main bedroom.  A new Sky Freesat card has been ordered and should arrive soon. We have contacted John Lewis with regard to the noisy oven and this is due to be looked at.  We have oiled the patio doors for the time being and these are sliding a bit better. We are hoping to have new doors fitted in the winter."
    Mr Springett - May 2012
The Clachaig Inn does a great range of real ales and good food.
    Mr Townsend - May 2012
We had a great time at this wonderful cottage, it was a lot of house for two people and had everything we needed. The view from the back overlooking the loch was stunning and it was even nice when it rained! The local pub in the village (The Laroch) was very nice, good food, good prices and a good atmosphere (just expect a wait when it is busy - but it is worth it). The village co-op was big enough to provide the essentials. There is no cash machine in the village but you can withdraw money from the post office in the co-op (most banks). The only issues we had with the cottage were the internet which is very limited, it would not even let us look at our bank or check emails or even get onto trip advisor (to check local restaurant reviews) as these sites were blocked. We had to resort to using our mobile as a modem. The sliding door in the downstairs living room is very stiff and heavy and took a few goes to get it to shut properly and lock. The only other issue was that because of all the windows in the living room (upstairs) and the glass door to the main bedroom, we were woken up each morning as soon as it became light; the whole room was lit up by 5am. It would have been nice to have some curtains or something over the doors. Other than that we really enjoyed our stay at Lochside house and hope to return in the future.
    Mr Powell - May 2012
Beautiful house and interior decoration. We spent most of our afternoons in the upstairs lounge room taking advantage of the views to the mountains and Loch Leven through the big glass windows. The house is very well equipped and the kitchen has everything you could need. Great place to explore the area, Fort William Spean Bridge, Oban, Inverary, Ben Nevis and Glencoe all quick and easy to get to. Wonderful mountain walks on your door step. A dinner or lunch at Loch Leven Seafood cafe is an absolute must!
    Mrs Wilson - April 2012
Beautifully decorated and furnished.Amazing location. Helpful and friendly caretaker who let us check in early on Rugby Grand Slam weekend, much appreciated. Great for hill walkers and mountain enthusiasts as so many monroes and scramble within a short drive. All in all a fantastic break.
    Mr Morgan - March 2012
Although the weather was severe and we weren't really able to explore the area, we enjoyed our stay in this property very much. The house was modern, clean and comfortable and is equipped with everything. The location could not be surpassed, with fantastic views and a tranquility that might make you think you were more remote than you thought. I would love to return.
    Mr Minton - December 2011
Very nice property at a fantastic location. Superb views!
    Mr. Vanmourik - October 2011
A lovely house in a fabulous location by Loch Leven with breathtaking views, just a few minutes drive from Glen Coe.
    Mr Townsend - June 2011
We stayed with our folks and all had their own bedroom. We were all very comfortable, even when a storm raged around us. Incredible views from the sitting room and upstairs rooms. Great kitchen and amenities. We would definitely stay here again, especially with a little better weather. We were not so lucky in that department although we got the best rainbow picture ever and an incredible changing sky over the course of a week.

Wonderful house - well thought out, well equipped and beautifully situated.
    Mr Applin - May 2011
The view from the upstairs living room (accessed via one of the bedrooms) across Loch Leven to the Pap of Glen Coe is stunning. There is also a downstairs living room - again with a good view, but not quite so jaw dropping. Location is surprisingly private, given the proximity of other buildings, but it is not "remote" - the main A82 is only just over 100m away, so outside the house traffic could always be heard, but inside was very quiet. The proximity of the A82 has the advantage of easy access to Glen Coe, Oban and Fort William areas. The new Sustrans National Cycle route 78, which ultimately will go all the way to Oban, is complete for many (traffic free) miles of the route already and highly recommended. Loads of Munros in this area, trips to several islands from Oban are possible, foot ferry (take your bikes) from Port Appin to Lismore recommended. Diving (SCUBA) and canoeing from the garden of this house are also possible! The house is very well designed and equipped; everything in first-rate condition, but Zebra skin floor mat in one bedroom may not be to everyone's taste! Only suggestion for a possible improvement would be access to the garage for under-cover bike parking. The caretaker lives adjacent and was very friendly and helpful. Overall an expensive but very high spec and comfortable house with awesome views.

Dining room/area overlooking the loch would be the icing on the cake so you could enjoy a wonderful dinner with a most amazing view. Bath sheet sized towels would be better and would complement the fantastic bathrooms.
    Mr Waller - April 2011
So much to see and do around and about - fantastic house
    Miss Elmer - February 2011
The location can not be beaten, utterly perfect! We took a kayak up with us and used it in the loch. The house is very well decorated and furnished. The kitchen is one of the best equiped kitchens I've seen as so many self catering places offer the bare minimum but this house had a selection of baking trays, every utensil you could think of etc. Cooking from scratch was easily do-able. Only down side was the awful zebra skin in the main bedroom. Thought it was a personal taste too far. But otherwise a perfect stay!
