Set on the edge of the picturesque village of Doune near Stirling, Old Newton of Doune is a 700 year-old castle that is ideal for groups and family celebrations. Comfortably sleeping 12 guests, the castle is located in an ideal position for those looking to explore both Glasgow, Edinburgh and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs – each is just an hour or less away by car.

Described in Scottish history books as a 16th century L-plan fortalice, the house was originally built for defence and was later used domestically in the 18th and 19th centuries. The castle has welcomed some of Scotland’s most illustrious guests including Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the enlightenment philosopher David Hume and author Sir Walter Scott. More recently, the cast and crew of the popular series ‘Outlander’ had made Old Newton their home during production, with many scenes being filmed at Doune Castle just across the road.

The property itself is spacious and full of character, with plenty of social spaces that everyone will enjoy. The ‘Long Room’ is a TV room/games room, which is sure to be a popular place with both young and old members of the group. The music room is an extremely cosy room with low beamed ceilings, making it the perfect location to relax by the fire with your favourite tipple in hand. Bedrooms can be found in both the ‘Tower’ section of the castle as well as in the heart of the main building. Down on the basement level, you will find a vaulted chapel, which is available to hire for weddings or other ceremonies.

Old Newton of Doune is set on a private estate, surrounded by acres of parkland. The large, enclosed walled garden is perfect for those with four-legged friends. The warm, summer evenings can be spent outside on the lawn where you can enjoy watching the sun setting over Doune Castle. The village is just a short walk away, where there are lots of cafes and shops that are well worth exploring during your stay. Whether you decide to use Old Newton as a base for exploring cities further afield, or for a quiet and relaxing break away from the hustle and bustle of life, then this is the perfect retreat that you are sure to enjoy.

    Old Newton of Doune reviews
We booked Old Newton for a family holiday in July 2019. We had a wonderful time. Old Newton is the most beautiful building with character. All rooms were different and furnished to the highest of standards. Vicki, the owner greeted us and was most welcoming. She even brought extra dog beds for our pets, which was a lovely extra touch. The walled garden allows for privacy and is a haven of peace, it is very well stocked and just lovely. Doune has lots of walks and wildlife which we enjoyed. We also visited Stirling and some surrounding towns as they were easily assessible. We would absolutely recommend a stay. We intend to book again soon.
