    Beautiful surround and nice view

    My family love staying at Old Town Cottage. It is cosy, clean and comfortable. The views from it are amazing. We made the most of sitting in the sun lounge to make the most of this. We saw red deer in the field opposite every night of our stay. We like to get right away from it all and this suits us wonderfully.

    The location is superb and the cottage facilities are generally good but! It is really nice to sit in the sun lounge but all the double glazed windows are blown and so the view is much impaired by condensation and water streaks. Many other windows in the house are similarly blown. The bed in the main bedroom is uncomfortably hard/firm but the en suite is fine. We did not use the other beds or the bathroom. In the kitchen the floor creaks annoyingly just by the sink and the prehistoric cooker needs replacing, glad we were not cooking for 6! The most important thing that needs urgent attention is the planks that cover the manhole at the entrance to the driveway. This needs a proper manhole cover to be fitted. I am so pleased the neighbour alerted me on arrival. Sadly there was no visitors book in which to leave comments and learn from the experiences of others.
    Owners Response: "Thank you for your comments about Oldtown Cottage. Any comments are always useful and appreciated. With regard to the cooker, we have been waiting for a gap in the bookings to be able to get a new one installed. Being in the Highlands and far from a major centre it’s not always possible to do this immediately. However, I can advise that a new cooker is being installed on Tuesday 10 July when there is a break in the bookings. The popped double glazing is also being looked at – once again not able to be done during the season but hopefully will be taken care of sometime over the coming winter and spring 2018-2019. As for the manhole cover, I have spoken to the person who runs the maintenance and he advises that the wooden cover is designed to withstand 2.5 metric tons in weight. It is safe for now, but once again we will look at a steel or concrete replacement as soon as is viable. The cottage has undergone some major renovations over the past 2-3 years with a total redecoration inside and the outside was repainted this year.It is all on-going."

    Oldtown Cottage is a lovely and comfortable place to stay. It is very, very quiet and comfortable. With 2 full baths and a half bath, it is convenient for two families or a large family. The two sitting rooms are comfortable plus it has an eat in kitchen and a large dining room. Good place to stay!

    Overall the cottage was good it was well furnished and comfortable and with plenty of kitchen equipment. There were three things that were unsatisfactory, the grate in the fire was broken and thus difficult to manage the open fire, the matress on the bed was in need of replacement as it was very uncomfortable, and it would have been nice if the heating had been turned up before our arrival. It was otherwise a very pleasant stay.

    We loved our time at Oldtown Cottage. The house is extremely well equipped for visitors. The kitchen had everything we could think of, the utility area was a great bonus. We loved our evenings by the fire relaxing after a day of exploring the area. We'd love to come back again, and would highly recommend the house to suit almost everyone. The stairs up to the bedrooms and bathrooms may not suit older visitors. Brora was a 10min drive for us. Where there was a bakery & small supermarket for grocery shopping. The golf club and Sutherland Inn hotel were very nice for meals out. We found the Heritage centre very interesting & the beach is breathtaking! You're also only a short drive to Golspie to visit the magnificent Dunrobin Castle & Dornoch for some lovely shops and beaches. All in all a perfect corner of the world to escape and relax in the most beautiful surroundings. The only small suggestion I would make was the TV could do with an update. But it all added to the charm of the place.

    Really pleased my comments from last year were acted on. The oven door was repaired and there are comprehensive notes in the sun lounge area, which really help clarify what you do with the bins etc. Last year we had to guess, so well done! The cottage is lovely and the views stunning. It was clear the place had been decorated over the winter months too and that looked nice. Saw red deer in the field opposite almost every day. Even saw two pine martens in the garden. They were as surprised to see us as we were to see them! Can't beat the scenery and peace here.

    Old Town Cottage is a lovely property with stunning views. Internet access is a bonus (though be aware there is no phone signal. To use your mobile you need to walk up the hill behind the cottage, though this is well worth doing for the view anyway). The rooms are cosy and comfortable and we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. We hope to come back. Cleanliness was excellent, there were plenty of towels, the beds were lovely, and the size of the property is impressive and very good value for the rental. You can't beat the view from the kitchen sink either. It is amazing. We have some minor niggles which are management issues, rather than to do with the property. Firstly usually I would leave a review in the visitor book (and did so when I last stayed at the property). I didn't this time as someone had written a rude comment against one of the entries (ironically mine from years ago). I noted NOBODY has written a review in the book for some time, presumably because they were also put off by this. Not sure what can be done on this (and yes I know my writing is awful!) but it left a nasty taste and I wonder if the owner would be better off not having the visitor book out at all. Just a thought. Secondly, the oven door handle is very loose and is at risk of coming away in someone's hand. This should be corrected ASAP. We haven't left a note for the caretaker as this is probably outside what they are meant to do and I think you at Cottages and Castles need to take this up with the owner. The risk of accident here will increase the longer this is left. (Washing machine and tumbler dryer are excellent, though there may be an issue with the washing machine draining properly. On most of the loads I did it was fine but there was an odd one that didn't so this should be checked). Thirdly, there were no batteries in the DVD remote, which is an oversight. The biggest irritation though was the total lack of information as to when to put out the bins etc, what bin was due out as in the kitchen there was only an out of date notice going back to 2012/2013. There were also notes on paper sheets saying what couldn't go in the recycle bin but these bits of paper could easily get lost. Likewise the bit of paper with the wifi password on it. It would pay the owner to compile a folder of information on bins, passwords, where local doctors, vets, banks are etc as on other holidays we have been on, practically every cottage has something this as it makes life easier for both the owner and the tenants going in having all necessary information to hand. There also ought to be a checklist so that batteries are replaced or a small supply is left at the cottage. After a long and tiring journey, this kind of oversight is annoying. As I say though property lovely, hope to come back but please look at these issues.

    Cottages & Castles Ltd. (acting as agents for property owners) provides a guarantee for tenants who have to cancel their holiday at a cottage.

    If it is necessary to cancel your holiday, for any of the reasons A 1-5 below, you may do so at any time up until the close of business on the last working day before your tenancy commences and we will refund your balance. Your deposit is not refundable. If you have made a late booking and paid in full you will receive your payment minus the normal deposit sum (usually 30%).

    There is no charge for this holiday protection – it is included in the cost of your holiday. Please note that the protection does not apply to holidays in our properties with codes beginning with P (usually castles, mansions and lodges).

    Deposits may be transferred to a different date for a holiday at the same property within 12 months of the original holiday date, subject to availability, but not, however, for a different property. If the new booking is at a higher rate the tenant must pay the extra cost. No refund will be made if the new date is at a lower rate.

    A:
    1. Death, accidental bodily injury, or illness (excluding pre-existing or chronic illness/conditions, or illness arising through epidemics or pandemics)
    a) the Proposer and/or persons with whom he/she has arranged to travel.
    b) any close relative or business associate of the Proposer or of any person with whom he/she has arranged to travel or arranged to meet at the specified holiday establishment. We will require appropriate documentary evidence of illness or bodily injury from a registered medical practitioner. This evidence must state that the Proposer is unfit to travel.

    2. Jury service, witness call or unemployment through redundancy of the Proposer after the date of booking and prior to the commencement date of the holiday.

    3. Fire or theft which is the subject of an insurance claim at the Insured’s main residence or business premises within seven days before commencement of the holiday.

    4. Occupational postings not contemplated at the time the holiday is booked.

    5. Cancellation or curtailment of scheduled transport services due to strikes, riots or civil commotion, but limited to the cost of alternative transport up to £50 per person for the outward journey only.

    But not, however:

    B:
    1. Disinclination to travel.

    2. Failure of public or private transport.

    3. Suicide, attempted suicide, insanity, the influence of intoxicating liquor or the effect of drugs not taken in accordance with treatment prescribed and directed by a qualified medical practitioner or booking a holiday which is or would be against the advice of a registered medical practitioner.

    4. Pregnancy unless problems occur which prevent the person travelling. A  verification must be signed by a registered medical practitioner to this effect

    5. Any loss which is otherwise insured.

    6. Holiday accommodation booked outside Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands
