Description

Poppies is a traditional stone cottage set in a stunning location with spectacular views across the Kilbranon Sound towards the Kintyre. Literally just a stone's throw from the beach, this cottage is wonderfully light and airy and would make an idyllic romantic getaway for two, as well as an ideal base for walkers and cyclists alike. It enjoys the peace and tranquility of a charming village, yet is within 10 minutes drive of the villages of Blackwaterfoot and also Lochranza. In addition there are many high and low level walking routes accessible nearby, and visitors here can look forward to the prospect of some incredible sunsets.

With very comfortable accommodation for up to four over two levels, the cottage includes a master bedroom with views towards three different aspects and a very useful sofa bed downstairs in the sitting room. The kitchen is well equipped and has everything that guests could need. However, for those who prefer to dine out, there are numerous excellent restaurants nearby. Closest is the Lighthouse in Pirnmill but there are many more to choose from in Blackwaterfoot and Lochranza.

The house itself offers an ideal location to make the best of the island, particularly the mountainous region in the north, as well as access to beautiful sandy beaches on the north west coast and the golf course in Lochranza. The ferry from Lochranza takes 30 minutes and runs regularly to Claonaig in the summer season and Tarbert in the off season. From there, the Kintyre peninsula can be explored.

For those interested in historical sites, the King's Caves in local Blackwaterfoot are a series of natural sandstone caves with fragile ancient carvings on the walls. In addition, the Neolithic and Bronze age site of the Machrie Standing Stones is just a short drive from the cottage.

For whisky lovers, the famous Isle of Arran Distillery is less than 10 minutes by car. It offers tours and tastings and has an excellent restaurant and visitor centre.

Translation : The accommodation corresponded to the pictures, which is not always the case. I felt very, very well. It was spotless, warm, the landlord very friendly (a welcome bottle of wine and a bunch of flowers inbetween, THANKS !!), the shower was a pleasure and the bed was very comfortable. Real wood floor, the purest luxury in a holiday home. You could hear only the birds and the sea, otherwise wonderful silence. The equipment was good. Since I had to work on my PC during my stay, I missed a chair. There is also no closet, only a dresser on the upper floor. A private parking lot in front of the house. With several people I imagine the stay cramped. As a solo traveler I would book poppies again. I loved the pub "The Crofters" in Brodick. The service was very nice and the music was great!
    Miss Ramacher-schmitz - March 2019
We really enjoyed our recent stay at Poppies. A really great get away from it all location. Poppies is a very well equipped cottage, with everything you would need to make your stay enjoyable. The dog loved the early morning beach walks right outside the door. The views and of sound of the nearby sea is also quite special and very relaxing. Nothing is too far away by car if you are looking for some adventures. There is a shop within walking distance. The local restaurant was closed when we visited as it was Christmas. The only negative for me was, I didn't find the chairs or sofa very comfortable to sit on, that might just have been personal to me though. Overall a perfect spot. Much enjoyed chill out space. Thanks.
Mr And Mrs Costella - December 2018
We found a gem in finding Poppies. We loved staying there and hope to return next year. The cottage is in the most beautiful setting, just steps from the water, and takes advantage of stunning sunsets. Poppies was spotlessly clean and well equipped, having just about everything we needed for our week's stay; kitchen with oven, microwave & fridge-freezer, plenty of pots, dishes & utensils, a shower room, living room with sofa-bed and bedroom upstairs. My only suggestion would be to have a dressing table style area with a lit large mirror where ladies can do their hair and make-up. The cottage is in a quiet village, in the north west of Arran, which has a lovely community spirit. The local shop has a good selection, including some fresh, local produce. We found the property information folder very helpful and there was lots of info on everything Arran has to offer. Perhaps the best thing about Poppies was the visiting wildlife, including red squirrels, pheasants and robins. I could have sat and watched them playing all day and I'm sure they'd have cone into the cottage if I'd opened the French doors! We also saw Gannets diving for fish and, a little further along the coast, we saw seals, birds of prey and other seabirds. Apples and wildflowers from the garden were a lovely, welcoming touch.
    Mrs Gray - September 2018
We have just returned from Poppies, on this occasion staying a week. The cottage is warm and comfortable, well equipted and has everything that you need, from dishes, crockery, pot and pans, bags, kitchen roll, to books, boards games, CD's/DVD's and countless reading material on where to go and what to do. The garden birds are always visiting the feeders (bring your own seed/nuts) along with the cheeky red squirrel and pheasant. We were lucky enough to to see a group of Porpoise, swimming up and down The Kilbrannon Sound, looking over to The Mull of Kintyre, from the cottage. Being September the weather was mixed but still good, which led to some beautiful sunsets. There are many nice places to eat, some that we have eaten in and would recommend are, the Stag Restaurant in Lochranza (you have to book), The Lighthouse in Pirnmill, Cafe Thyme between Pirnmill and Machrie. As we have relatives in Pirnmill this cottage is an ideal base for us and I am sure we will be returning next year.
    Mrs Mowat - September 2018
Have just stayed at Poppies for 3 weeks. A perfect accommodation for the two of us with everything we needed in terms of comfort and practicality. Everything spotlessly clean and fresh on arrival and cottage has an great collection of books to while away the sometimes rainy hours! Great large drencher shower in the bathroom and kitchen has everything we needed for cooking as well as we do at home. Views to the sea are incredible and when the sun floods into the cottage, the light and brightness inside and the colours of the garden are quite spectacular. Pirnmill itself is quiet and tranquil and very well provisioned with post office, shop, cash point (in post office) and restaurant. It’s also close to Lochranza for easy access to the Kintyre ferry for day trips and stops at the Sandwich Station for bacon rolls! Plenty of space for the two of us (can accommodate 4), and windows in upstairs bedroom area are great for additional views, especially of the stag which seemed to like to take a trot along the road of an evening! Hope to be back sometime soon as feel completely refreshed!
    Ms Mathew - July 2018
A very comfortable, well designed and kitted out, cottage. Stunning views over to Kintyre. Abundant wildlife including red squirrel, red deer, otter and a vast population of birds. A beach just 50 yards away, a restaurant a mile away, and very good other restaurants a short drive away. We have already booked for next year we loved it so much. Our dog Molly was also in 7th heaven! The Isle of Arran is stunningly beautiful.
    Mr Sims - June 2018
Our third time on Arran, but first time in the Poppies, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The cottage is well appointed, cosy, and with a super location. We have used the Lighthouse Restaurant on all previous occasions, which we strongly recommend, super food, and its an approx 10 min walk from the Poppies. We intend, and hope, to book the Poppies again next year.
    Mr Salter - June 2018
Poppies is a lovely place to stay. Views are superb looking out over Kilbranon Sound to the Mull of Kintyre. Internally there is a little maintenance that needs doing. Only one of the Patio Doors locks and it would therefore be simple to break in. The Gas Hob electronic ignition doesn't work (and didn't work when we stayed there a year ago). We were supplied with nothing but very short Matches to light it and this proved difficult to do without getting burnt. Would it really be that expensive to replace the Hob? The television screen is also damaged and affects the picture (looks like someone has pressed their fingers very hard into it and left permanent marks). the Cottage was overall very clean but internally the windows and Patio Doors were filthy. Looks like the previous occupants had a dog or small children as there were nose / hand prints all over the glass. I personally cleaned the inside of the Patio Doors as it was affecting the view of the garden.
    Mr Glover - June 2018
Very comfortable cottage for 2 mobile people in a beautiful setting. The sunsets over Kintyre are spectacular. Lots of wildlife on land and sea and a visit by a submarine too.
    Mr Carman - April 2018
Lovely cottage lovely location garden could be fenced for the dog's light house restaurant is a must very friendly food lovely and the little shop is well equipped would come back again
    Mr Huitson - April 2018
We have had another lovely week at Poppies. Its so quiet and relaxing though we couldn't make much use of the garden as it was pretty cold - but in a long hard winter the weather wasn't too bad. The cottage is so comfortable with everything you might need to keep comfortable and entertained. The location is fabulous with a beach right outside, sunsets, birds and deer coming down to the shore at night. We don't take a car and use the bus for getting around. It took some planning as there are not that many buses but we were in no hurry. The drivers are all friendly and helpful and we had some great - if bumpy - rides! It's fairly remote at Pirnmill and we went before Easter when places open up more - but the shop in Pirnmill is great and had everything we needed and a post office. This time we took the boat over to Clonaig and the views back to Arran are stunning. The Sandwich Shack by the ferry serves fabulous sandwiches. We will be back to Poppies soon. :)
    Mrs Curtis - March 2018
This was a lovely little cottage in beautiful surroundings. We have family in Pirnmill so this was just perfect for a few days stay. The cottage was clean, warm, comfortable, well looked after (inside and out) and had everything that you required. The wine, fresh flowers and welcome letter was a lovely touch. The cottage is perfect for two people. The reason I only scored four stars was although the water in both bathroom and kitchen taps was very hot the shower was not, more luke warm, but by no means was it cold and possibly due to the temperature setting. You do have to be careful upstairs on navigating around the bed and room, due to the sloping roof/walls. I appreciate why this was designed this way so that it was in keeping with the other two attached houses. This being said we enjoyed our stay and have in fact booked a week later on in the year.
    Mrs Mowat - February 2018
This cottage has all you need for a lovely relaxing holiday. Right next to the sea and a short walk to a lovely restaurant The Lighthouse, would recommend this cottage to anyone.
    Ms Price - September 2017
We had a brilliant week in Poppies, Arran is an amazing place and Poppies is awesome little cottage to do it from. Really well equipped and we loved just sitting at the window watching the birds and red squirrels on the feeders! Would definitely recommend.
    Mr Mason - August 2017
This is the second time we've stayed at Poppies and we hope to book again in years to come. It is perfect for our needs. The location is very quiet. The cottage is sensibly equipped and furnished - not overly fussy so that you are frightened to breathe! Owing to the distance from the car parking area to the cottage plus the steps to the front porch, Poppies is possibly not suitable for those with mobility problems. Someone who is very tall would have to exercise extreme car in the bedroom as the ceiling is very restricted.
    Mrs Shrimpton - July 2017
Lovely small cottage with wonderful wildlife literally on doorstep - red squirrels and gannets feeding. Cottage very clean and tidy. if the WM had been a combined WD/TD I would have given it 5 stars
    Mr Brown - July 2017
We loved it here. The cottage faces a meadow and onto the sea. We spent a lot of time watching the wildlife and were lucky to see a pod of dolphins swim by. The garden is very pretty and includes 2 resident red squirrels and a variety of birds who come to the feeder and kept us entertained on a morning. The cottage is very well equipped and comfortable. We did lots of walking and particularly enjoyed Corre Fionn Lochlan which starts from just up the road at Thundergay. It was quite strenuous but stunning and us and our dog enjoyed all our walks on the island. I totally recommend the cottage for its location and is a little piece of heaven. We were sad to leave.
    Mrs Ditchburn - July 2017
The location is fantastic. Great views out to sea, lovely grounds with red squirrels feeding and a brown hare visiting regularly. The cottage is comfortable and well equipped (with certain exceptions). This would be a 'Five Star' except for two factors. There are only very limited areas upstairs where it is possible to stand upright. Where you need to duck down, not only are you likely to bang your head, but also your back as the valleys between the two roofs are so low. There is no wardrobe. Just two coat hooks in the bedroom - no hangers at all. Luckily I always travel with half a dozen hangers, so we managed. These two adverse points did not spoil our holiday and the location and comfort outweigh the disadvantages. The low ceilings ought to be pointed out and it would be easy to add somewhere to hang clothes.
    Mr Shaw - June 2017
Our 2nd visit to Poppies and we were not disappointed. The cottage has everything you need and is ideally located for that get away from it all holiday. Great outlook looking over the sea on the quieter western side of the island. We were entertained daily by a variety of bird life and red squirrels. A perfect location for a quiet and relaxing break.
    Mr Powell - June 2017
A lovely cottage in an absolutely great location.
    Mr & Mrs Penton - April 2017
A romantic getaway ideal for two people but there is a bed setteee too. Well appointed and easy to use appliances. The upstairs bedroom is a bit tricky as the roof slopes all round but this too adds to the ambience. Facing due West you get the most amazing sunsets over the Kintye peninsula. A wonderfully quiet location on the Arran's West coast ideal for all visiting locations.
Mr Mc Mullen - March 2017
Poppies provided us with perfect accommodation for our first visit to Arran. It was warm, cosy, peaceful and spotlessly clean! Not to mention the amazing view and bottle of wine waiting for us on the table with fresh flowers! We will definitely stay in Poppies again when we return to Arran. A place of beauty and chill time!
    Mrs Gilbertson - March 2017
Was a lovely cosy cottage with all we could need plus the extra information provided by the owners along with a bottle of wine
    Miss Straughan - March 2017
Great cottage, clean and well-equipped. Lovely to be able to watch the sunset out of the front window!
    Mr Kirby - December 2016
Poppies is a lovely cottage. It is very warm and well appointed with everything you could possibly need. The Wi -Fi was excellent (although Vodaphone reception less so - but that didn't matter). It's in a great situation with good access to lots of interesting walks.
    Mrs Evans - December 2016
We had a great stay at Poppies and found it lovely and cosy and comfortable. The only reason it didn't get five stars is that there was supposed to be an enclosed garden (useful if you have a dog) and there wasn't...ok, there was an enclosed bit at the front, but it's all tiled and small and not suitable for a dog. The only reason this is an issue is that the main road isn't that far away and whilst the main road isn't terribly busy, the traffic does pass quickly and we wouldn't trust our beloved pooch to navigate it safely on his own! All negatives aside, Poppies is in a great location and is ideal for anyone wanting to get away from it all. The accommodation itself is brilliant and we really couldn't fault it.
    Ms Richards - November 2016
Beautiful cottage in stunning location. Everything for a comfortable stay and a family of red squirrels to entertain. Porpoise and otters along the coast.
    Mrs Williams - October 2016
We had a lovely few days at Poppies. The cottage was well situated for exploring northern Arran and we especially enjoyed visiting the distillery at Lochranza and the stone circles on Machrie moor, although in the opposite directions, both were only a few minutes away from the cottage. Brodick was also well within travelling distance being only about twenty minutes away. The cottage itself was very comfortable and well equipped, no complaints at all. Despite the weather, which wasn't brilliant, we did have one amazing sunset over the Kilbrannan Sound which was only across the very quiet road from us. We would definitely rebook if ever we visit Arran again, exceptionally good value for money. Our dogs enjoyed it too.
    Mrs Seaman - September 2016
Perfect location. Just the right things provided for in property. Definitely dog-friendly.
    Mrs Fenton - August 2016
Had a fabulous week in Arran. Stayed at Poppies in Pirnmill. Lovely cottage in peaceful location. Cottage was comfortable and like a home from home. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 star was that the garden isn't fully enclosed which is a bit of a hassle when you have a dog with you who loves being outside.
    Mrs Mclaughlin - June 2016
Fabulously well equipped wee cottage, it has everything you could think you need, from a shower seat for the elderly to a set of boules to play in the garden. Beach wise, there's a beach at Dougarie but it can be a bit blustery so for a quieter place head to the beach only if the tide is out at Whitefarland, just before Pirnmill, there's a car park 100 yards from the small swing park by the beach. Food wise, the Lighthouse restaurant is a 20 min walk from Poppies or a drive further north to Catacol there's a hotel which does excellent pub grub. Brodick castle gardens are definitely worth a visit, so is the distillery in Lochranza even just for the bar & cafe. The Pirnmill village shop stocks lots of emergency stuff as well as helpful staff given advice on the island.
    Mr Aitken - May 2016
Poppies is an attractive, extremely well equipped cottage. Its location by the coast on the western side of Arran provided some excellent views and stunning sunsets. It is ideally located to explore the western side of the island. We saw loads of wildlife throughout our stay, deer, seals, golden eagle and gannets being examples. The deer at Lochranza have to be seen to be believed, on the streets and on the golf course. We will certainly consider strongly going back to Arran and staying at Poppies again. Good food at The Lighthouse and great cakes at the distillery at Lochranza.
    Mr Plumb - May 2016
We enjoyed a lovely weekend stay at the Poppies cottage. A peaceful location, with deer munching on the grass and sea birds flying just above the waters edge. The cottage has a well equipped kitchen for cooking. It's a great location for exploring the north end of the island and a good starting point for a walk or cycling. We'd stay there again on our next Arran visit.
    Mrs Davis - April 2016
Most relaxing holiday in a long time. Fantastic place to watch the local wild life right outside the window. Great jumping of point for numerous anywhere on the island but particularly some of the hillier options in the North. Scenery and sunsets were spectacular. The lighthouse restaurant was as comfortable for morning coffee and a cake as it was suitable for a quiet evening meal in. Small well stocked local shop was very handy as well. House was exactly what we needed for the fortnight for the two of us. Very warm and cosy and kitchen equipped well to cover cooking and baking needs.
    Mr Johnstone - March 2016
Our holiday in Poppies was perfect. The cottage was warm, clean, comfortable, well placed on the island and particularly well kitted out with everything you could possibly need. There was good parking and a local shop for any extras we needed after stocking up for the week in Brodick. An excellent place to stay on a lovely island.
    Mrs Evans - December 2015
We had a lovely few days at Poppies enjoying the fabulous location and the entertainment offered by the birds and the red squirrels in the garden. The cottage was clean and well equipped although the bed was a bit short for us and the low ceilings in the bedroom a bit precarious! We enjoyed the Stag Restaurant at Lochranza where a good variety of vegetarian and gluten free options were cheerfully offered. We would stay at Poppies again.
    Mrs Darling - October 2015
Lovely little cottage to stay, with fabulous views over the water to Kintyre. Watching red squirrels eating the seeds from the bird feeder on the washing line was a lovely way to enjoy our morning coffee. Great base for exploring the island & I have to say best views overall. Down sides to this property are little but we think if addressed would give it 5stars. The tv is upstairs in the bedroom even if active like us all day going to bed at 7pm to watch a bit of telly is strange. Having a medium size dog with us & having stunning weather we would have loved to open the patio doors to the big garden but it wasn't fence in & as cottage sits on main road (albeit back a bit) one chase of a squirrel could have ended in disaster for the dog.
    Mrs Eccleson - September 2015
Poppies was a beautiful cottage, ideal for our needs. It's beautifully clean, well presented and well maintained. The gardens are well kept very well. Very warm and very comfortable. The reason it's not 5 stars: The TV is upstairs! Why? Great if there's one downstairs, but there isn't. Add to that that the TV is well past it's sell by date, (Videos? - In a machine that squeaks!). It needs a serious update or needs throwing out altogether. Do it properly or not at all! That stopped me giving you 5 stars. I also sent the caretaker a very long text when we left to say thank you and just to advise him that we had left the cottage and that a bulb was out on the outside light. Just trying to help. You've got a wonderful place there. Sort the details - 5 Stars!
Owners Response: "Thank you very much for your comments - we do plan on upgrading the TV shortly and would be happy for it to be placed downstairs in future. Thanks for letting us know about the outside light - we will ensure our housekeeper is aware of your comments. Delighted that you enjoyed your stay Poppies and hope you’ll visit us again!"
    Mr Wormleighton - September 2015
Poppies is a very well equipped lovely, wee cottage with a gorgeous garden in an amazing location. A perfect sized cottage for two. We particularly loved the red squirrels playing in the garden and the amazing sunsets from the cottage. A visit to "The Lighthouse" restaurant at the other end of the village for coffee or dinner is a must - great food and reasonably priced. Only slight inconvenience and oddity wIth the cottage was having the only TV upstairs in the bedroom.
    Mrs Duff - August 2015
we had a lovely holiday in Pirnmill on the fabulous isle of Arran, the cottage was perfect and very well equipped with everything you might ever need, there was lots of local information and many books on local walks ,wildlife ,history etc .The village is just small ,but it has a shop and a very nice restaurant too,"The Lighthouse"which operates a BYOB policy and doesn't charge corkage, it's about twenty minutes walk from the cottage, there are lots of lovely places to visit Witing Bay is a really interesting place as is Lamlash and Brodick we saw lots of wildlife, red deer Lochranza, and heron oyster catchers and cormorants just near us
