Set in the heart of the friendly Isle of Mull village of Salen, Puffer Cottage is a delightful ground floor stone cottage which once formed part of the blacksmith's house and has been thoughtfully renovated to create a comfortable and welcoming holiday home.

The large beamed sitting room with its wood panelled wall, comfy seating and dining area is a lovely place to relax in after an active day discovering this beautiful Hebridean isle. The maritime theme gives Puffer Cottage a great feeling of character with two antique brass port holes that cleverly light up to reveal painted ship scenes relating to this historic Scottish island.

The spacious king size bedroom makes this an ideal cottage for couples. There is a small, modern fitted and well equipped kitchen.

Salen is the ideal location for those wanting to visit all corners of Mull. This charming and historical village overlooks the Sound of Mull and is set half way between the ferry terminal at Craignure and the island's main village of Tobermory. A small but stunningly beautiful road meanders its way from Salen, passing the Island of Ulva and the mighty Ben More to the west coast of Mull from where you can continue south to the village of Fionnphort and the Island of Iona.

Also available at the same location is Smiddy Cottage accommodating 2 + 2 with one double bedroom plus double sofa bed.

    Puffer Cottage reviews
    We really enjoyed our stay in Puffer Cottage. The cottage gave us everything we needed, in and around the house. It’s conviently situated on the island of Mull, is a good starting point for exploring the island. We took a boat to visit Staffa and sat with the puffins. Unfortunately, due to weather conditions, we didn’t get to visit Iona. A good reason to come back some other time.

    Nice and clean cottage with a well equipped kitchen, cosy living room and a comfortable large bed. The cottage is next to the spar supermarket so you can make all your shopping there. The bus to Tobermory or Craignure stops nearby (we don’t have a car). You can also hire bicycles in the village. Check in and check out was without problems. Thank you very much!!!

    This was not the best, nor the cleanest cottage we have stayed in, but as a base it was adequate. The main problem we had was that the front door would not lock and the water had to be run for 5 minutes before it started to get hot except for the shower. What a waste of water! We had good meals at the Glenforsa Hotel and Enjoy Mull was an excellent guided tour to see the wildlife and learn about the ecology of the island. We would go back to Mull, but not to Puffer Cottage.
    Owners Response: "Thank you for your comments regarding the Puffer Cottage, we are sorry that you were not pleased with your stay and are surprised that none of the matters regarding the cleanliness or the front door were brought to our attention during your stay, when we would have rectified this. We are aware of the long draw through with regard to the hot water and this is explained in the information pack. The environment is very much in our thoughts and although for historical reasons the water has a long draw this is being looked at and we hope to change this in the near future. Salen is the most central place on the island and proves an ideal base for touring and exploring this beautiful Hebridean isle."

    We couldn't have had better accommodation for exploring Mull. Located mid way between Craignure and Tobermory this property offered comfortable and pleasant accommodation for our short break. With great walks on the doorstep, a fabulous restaurant across the road and a fishmongers just down the way we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Everyone we met in the local area was very friendly and we hope to return in the near future.

    We found this holiday particularly beneficial, both as a location and also for the peace and quiet we were looking for. The Island of Mull has outstanding scenery, its a beautiful Island and well worth a visit, especially as able to tour the Island and also enjoy a visit to Iona. As we do not have a lot of trees on our Isle of Lewis, I was fascinated at the amount of trees there are on the Island, giving it a further natural beauty, together with scenery both on the west side and east side of the Island. I wonder if I could maybe point out that, more than one bath and hand towel per person could be supplied for patrons, staying for a few days. If that is a problem, it is easy enough for customers to take their own towels. Also I'm not sure if you were aware, the laundry was not working while we were there. A washing machine instead of a dishwasher could possibly be something to think of. A clothes horse situated in the porch would be ideal for hanging wet clothes (I use that in my own home when trying to dry washing!!). These are only a couple of minor details, but just giving an opinion. Again, Mull well worth a visit.

    This cottage was very well equipped and cosy. It was clean and the bed was comfy. It was very good value for money. Only drawbacks I think were: the lighting in the main room was rather dingy and the smoke alarm in the kitchen went off every time you toasted a piece of bread or opened the oven door to see if your cooking was ready. A garden area to sit out in would have been nice, but for the money we couldn't complain. It is very well located centrally for exploring the island, and the well-stocked Spar shop two doors away is a real bonus.

    Cottages & Castles Ltd. (acting as agents for property owners) provides a guarantee for tenants who have to cancel their holiday at a cottage.

    If it is necessary to cancel your holiday, for any of the reasons A 1-5 below, you may do so at any time up until the close of business on the last working day before your tenancy commences and we will refund your balance. Your deposit is not refundable. If you have made a late booking and paid in full you will receive your payment minus the normal deposit sum (usually 30%).

    There is no charge for this holiday protection – it is included in the cost of your holiday. Please note that the protection does not apply to holidays in our properties with codes beginning with P (usually castles, mansions and lodges).

    Deposits may be transferred to a different date for a holiday at the same property within 12 months of the original holiday date, subject to availability, but not, however, for a different property. If the new booking is at a higher rate the tenant must pay the extra cost. No refund will be made if the new date is at a lower rate.

    A:
    1. Death, accidental bodily injury, or illness (excluding pre-existing or chronic illness/conditions, or illness arising through epidemics or pandemics)
    a) the Proposer and/or persons with whom he/she has arranged to travel.
    b) any close relative or business associate of the Proposer or of any person with whom he/she has arranged to travel or arranged to meet at the specified holiday establishment. We will require appropriate documentary evidence of illness or bodily injury from a registered medical practitioner. This evidence must state that the Proposer is unfit to travel.

    2. Jury service, witness call or unemployment through redundancy of the Proposer after the date of booking and prior to the commencement date of the holiday.

    3. Fire or theft which is the subject of an insurance claim at the Insured’s main residence or business premises within seven days before commencement of the holiday.

    4. Occupational postings not contemplated at the time the holiday is booked.

    5. Cancellation or curtailment of scheduled transport services due to strikes, riots or civil commotion, but limited to the cost of alternative transport up to £50 per person for the outward journey only.

    But not, however:

    B:
    1. Disinclination to travel.

    2. Failure of public or private transport.

    3. Suicide, attempted suicide, insanity, the influence of intoxicating liquor or the effect of drugs not taken in accordance with treatment prescribed and directed by a qualified medical practitioner or booking a holiday which is or would be against the advice of a registered medical practitioner.

    4. Pregnancy unless problems occur which prevent the person travelling. A  verification must be signed by a registered medical practitioner to this effect

    5. Any loss which is otherwise insured.

    6. Holiday accommodation booked outside Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands
