Description

Come to the wonderful Isle of Barra and enjoy the comforts of ‘Scutaig’, a much loved and valued family home, your ‘home from home’ while on the island. With the emphasis being peace, quiet and relaxation, ‘Scutaig’ is there to provide it. A user friendly kitchen, a comfortable lounge and the dining room with the most breathtaking views is where you will lose track of time while enjoying your meal and chatting through the day's events. These same views can be captured from the bedrooms from the moment you open your eyes in the morning until you close them last thing.

The garden is fully fenced but you have a personal gate down to the shoreline rocks perfect to fish from or even launch a kayak.

Barra is one of the most attractive little islands in Britain and can boast a first prize in the 'Most Beautiful Island' competition. Its tranquility, distinctive culture and fascinating history will make any visit a memorable one. It is also an ideal starting point for visiting and exploring the Uists and Benbecula. The island is only 8 miles long and 4 miles wide, has beautiful white sand beaches and seven lochs which provide great fishing for brown and sea trout. Castlebay was once a 19th Century fishing port but today is a thriving town with shops, hotels and internet café, as well as a swimming pool and golf course. Scutaig is a delightful holiday cottage in Scotland's Highlands and Islands.

What a comfortable house in really beautiful location!
    Miss Munro - October 2018
The cottage is situated overlooking a sea inlet, so the view is constantly changing. Close to Castlebay for shops and facilities. Cottage warm and cosy, clean, comfortable, and many thoughtful extras. We had a lovely stay, unfortunately, or departure was more challenging, as the weather deteriorated, planes couldn't land/take off, ferries were not sailing, we ended up at Benbecula Airport, where we had an overnight stay, before eventually getting home a day later. People who live and work on the Islands, accept the weather, and cope with the challenges, we have nothing but praise and admiration for the way the staff dealt with all of us stranded. We were travelling with our 5 yr old Grandson (the only child amongst adults), the Airport staff were wonderful, answering his questions, and explaining everything to him. All of that aside, we would definitely look at staying in Scutaig again on our next venture back to Barra.
    Mr Wells - September 2018
Great location right on the coast. Perfect for exploring the rocks and fishing. Close to Castlebay and the highest point on Barra (worth the climb and easy parking). Nice to be contacted at the beginning of our stay and to get a few essentials left for us. Lots of towels, hand soap etc Very well equipped house. Community shop in Barra provided a good range of items from groceries to fish tackle to wool. Leisure centre was fab. Loved the island and the people. Thank you all!
    Miss Falconer - August 2018
Perfect location for quick access to Castlebay. Live being so close to the sea. Literally outside the door you can sit & watch the tides change, the Cal Mac leaving and returning from Oban & really chill out. House is a lovely warm quaint place to stay with a real feel of a hebridean home. Has facilities required to meet all your needs. Fab
    Miss Cameron - July 2018
With pleasure we think of our five days at Scutaig. All questions were already answered in good descriptions. The offered support from the local proprietor was very friendly. The house got everything we needed; from sharp knifes to washing powder. Also Wlan was good. It is very comfortable and cosy, a 50 yards away from the road so traffic noise doesn't disturb at all. We stayed in four people (two couples) and had a lot of fun.
    Mr Reichel - June 2018
Great cottage. Excellent location, very well equipped, clean and well run. Enjoyed fish and seafood from Barratlantic.
    Mr Cross - May 2018
Had a great time. House very good with great outlook. All instructions clear so would recommend to friends and family.
    Mr Kerr - May 2018
Fabulous wee house in the most picturesque location. Handy for Castlebay and the shops.was cosy and very well epuipt! Would definitely stay here again
    Mr Mcclements - March 2018
Barra is a pain to get to and the weather can be challenging, but those who have made the effort know that it is one of Britain's most beautiful places. Scutaig is among a cluster of houses, a few miles outside the island's one village, Castlebay, and you will need transport to do your shopping and generally to get around the island. We took our car this time, but have cycled round Barra in days when we were younger and fitter. The house, which has its own little garden, is situated down a little lane and the view from the front door looks over to Haeval, the island's highest hill. The only sounds to be heard are sheep in the field next to the house, the lapping of waves in the little bay on the other side of it and (with depressing frequency during our visit) the rain hammering on the house's roof! The window above the kitchen sink looks straight out to sea which ameliorates the tedium of doing the washing up to such an extent that we were wondering about taking a video through the window and erecting a screen above our own kitchen sink so we could forever imagine we were at Scutaig.
    Mr Humphries - August 2017
Great cottage in an idyllic setting it's a little dated as is everything on Barra but that is undoubtably part of its charm. It had everything you need and it's was lovely to come back and prepare a nice meal with wonderful sea food from Barra Atlantic
    Mrs Harrison - August 2017
Had a fantastic stay at Scutaig. Really well-equipped cottage, comfortable and cosy. The setting is superb and if you are lucky enough to have sunny weather as we did, the outside is a real sun trap and wonderful for eating out. Also great to spot the local otters. Barra is a beautiful island, and Scutaig made it extra special - definitely recommended!
Mr And Mrs Jeffs - May 2017
A Welcome pack would have been nice. The flowers were appreciated. The property was in good decorative order throughout, the rooms were clean and tidy. It was excellent to find a proper freezer and not just a totally inadequate freezer box at the top of the fridge. This gave us more options choosing the type of food we ate.The window to the Dining-room appeared to be quite drafty and may be faulty. Although the kitchen was well equipped, we felt the cupboard space was to a certain extent cluttered. Little space remained in the cupboards to store groceries, for example. The rooms warmed up quickly when the central heating was turned on. Overall, we would consider using the property once more. Trips recommended : Boat trip to Mingulay and good food eating out in Heathbank Hotel (north bay).
    Mr Cathcart - July 2016
Scutaig was spotted on our first visit to Barra in 2013. It's not too far out of Castlebay where your shopping will be done, the sea view was a bonus to watch the odd cormorant diving for supper. The accommodation was well stocked out with all you'd require on a self catering holiday property and very clean. I would recommend Scutaig for two sets of couples or a family.
    Mr Semple - June 2016
Scutaig was a wonderful experience. Our first visit to Barra was enhanced by the glorious sunshine and being able to eat outside in the evening was an added bonus. The property is very well equipped, everything one could need in a holiday cottage except perhaps a couple more chairs in the sitting room. The fenced garden was great for the dog as was the easy access to the sea. The beaches of Barra and Vatersay are beautiful. We didn't eat out much but bought fresh fish and prawns from Barratlantic. A very interesting trip. Would love to go back and would thoroughly recommend Scutaig.
    Mr Chambers - May 2016
Comfortable and well equipped cottage with a beautiful outlook. scutaig was perfect for our family of 5 ( and Frank the dog). Beautiful outlook and peaceful location- ideal for a totally ' get away from it' break. Barra is beautiful- stunning scenery, idyllic beaches, friendly people and total head space to really relax. Loved it all!
    Mrs Rayner - May 2015
very well equipped kitchen. good beds and nice rooms. the location was great and the sea at the bottom of the garden great for our children (13 and 11). Barra cook in-at the Castlebay Hall great but probably only held once a year. Snorkelling in Leinish Bay truly wonderful. Only half a mile to the east. Lunch in the airport café good and very good seafood from Barratlantic. Oh, by the way, the beaches are pretty good too!
    Mr Edwards - August 2014
My wife and I and our Otterhound, Luby, had a wonderful stay in Scutaig
    Mr Johnson - June 2014
Clean, well equipped and comfortable cottage in lovely situation. Hot water tap on wash basin in bathroom not working. Owner informed. Would be helpful if shared parking and access were mentioned in details.
    Mr Young - June 2013
Ideal holiday cottage in great location and within walking distance of Castlebay. House was equipped with everything you could need and will certainly book again.
    Mrs Watson - June 2012
A clean and comfortable property in a fantastic peaceful location. The garden is a great sun-trap with views over Brevig Bay. Would happily stay here again.
    Miss Sadler - May 2012
We had a great time. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the magical Isle of Barra and relaxing in the comfort of Scutaig. The cottage was clean, well-equipped and ideally situated, close to the seashore. Watching the waves crash against the rocks, from the warmth of the house and shelter of the garden was an amazing experience.
