Shinness Lodge, 7 miles north west from Lairg on a single track road, looks over Loch Shin in the heart of Sutherland, with easy access to the East, North and West Coasts.

The traditional stone lodge dates from the 1880s but has been fully modernised and is a warm and comfortable self catering holiday home. The owners have lived there until recently so the house is well equipped for easy living. You can sink into a comfortable new double bed in what used to be the nursery, with its animal frieze still on the wall, or bath in the big claw foot bath with lashings of hot water. For disabled users there is a good quality sofa bed in the ground floor study and a nearby easy access shower.

The whole house is fully central heated and feels warm and cosy, especially with the Aga in the kitchen. On a winter evening light a big fire in the living room from the unlimited supply of logs and sink into the comfortable arm chairs and sofas. In summer, enjoy a lunch time barbecue on the outdoor verandah overlooking the sparkling loch.

For naturalists the area is a haven for flora and fauna with great bird watching opportunities. Black Throated Divers nest on Loch Shin and deer can often be seen from the house in early morning and at dusk.

The Lodge owns two boats on Loch Shin for fishing or just for messing around in boats. The Ghillie is on site and available by arrangement to help and the hill lochs and Fiag and Tirry rivers provide lots of opportunities for fishermen.

Shinness is the perfect self catering holiday home from which to visit the northern Highlands. Play golf, go hill walking or watch the salmon leap up the Shin Falls just beyond Lairg and then enjoy a lovely meal. Go east for great golf courses at Dornoch, Brora and Golspie and visit romantic Dunrobin Castle. Bonar Bridge has serious off road cycling trails, a great nine hole golf course and a good bistro. The huge cliffs at Durness and the mysterious Smoo caves are an easy hour away, together with the empty white sands of the long West Coast beaches. Bird watching is wonderful at Handa Island and the hill walking opportunities include Ben Hope, Scotland’s most northerly Munro.

    Shinness Lodge reviews
Lovely traditional house with a spacious and homely feel. Clean, well appointed, plenty of parking, nice grounds and very helpful caretaker. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend to others.
    Mr Smith - July 2019
Shinness Lodge is a well positioned house that easily accommodates a large group of guests. Easy to find, the accommodation is traditionally and comfortably furnished in a relaxed country house style. The house is warmed by a superb log fire to the drawing room and excellent central heating throughout, with a good supply of hot water. Plenty of bathrooms and shower rooms, large bedrooms with comfortable beds and linens provided by the owners, meant that everyone slept well. The kitchen and utility are also well equipped making cooking very easy with plenty of cold food storage. The owners were very helpful in providing excellent pointers for shopping and eating out in and around Lairg. Of particular note is the Pier Cafe for light lunches and the local Spar and Costcutter supermarkets, also in Lairg. Sutherland Game and Shellfish in Lairg is excellent as is Swordale Butchers, Bonar Bridge where we ordered our meat in advance. Whilst there it's well worth walking around the estate and also taking a drive to Shin Falls and heading to the coast taking in the breathtakingly beautiful scenery and romantic ruins of ancient castles. We have no hesitation in recommending this house and hope to return in the not too distant future.
    Mr Chides - December 2018
This worked excellently for us as a joint vacation for 4 couples -- the kitchen and the living room (lounge) were the center of our activities. Bedrooms and beds worked out really well -- no complaints about too soft, too hard, too short. Easy access to three charming villages - Tain, Dornoch, and Cromarty. A bit of a long haul down to Inverness, but doable. The groundskeeper was very helpful, and even attempted to speak American to us. We regretted having to leave and we'd go again, in a flash.
    Mr Jones - September 2014
We had everything here we could possibly want for a happy and comfortable holiday.
    Mrs Clarkson - May 2014
Our family group of 13 persons, were 9 adults and 4 children (8 to 15). All had a wonderfull time. Plenty of books, games, CDs and the Lodge decourated with a large variety of atrifacts to ensure interest. Large warm kitchen and good laundry/ drying room were much appreciated. Large comfortable lounge. The caretaker was very helpful particularly with fishing equipment and information. Our family thoroughly enjoyed Shinness Lodge. A very pleasant week we will not forget. Lairg Visitors Information Centre is a delightful building with very helpful staff and well worth a visit.
