The Byre Cornescorn is the perfect country cottage for a romantic getaway or as an annexe to neighbouring Shepherds Cottage. Cornescorn at the foot of the Glenesk in Angus Glens is steeped in history and has been settled since the 17th century. During the recent renovation works, a marriage lintel inscribed with "JC and AG 1746" was found and can now be seen above the wood burning stove in the sitting room.  The recently refurbished self catering cottage has successfully combined modern style with traditional character and charm, and the open plan kitchen living room has a well equipped kitchen area with breakfast bar for dining, together with a comfortable seating area centred round the wood burning stove. A French door looks out to the beautiful Angus hills, ideal wandering out, coffee in hand, to take the morning air. The bedroom, which can be a super king double or twin, is stylish and comfortable and together with a modern bathroom makes this cottage the perfect rural retreat.

Situated at the foot of the Angus Glens, walkers will love the area, with walks ranging from gentle low level strolls to the more challenging Munros, ten in total including Dreish, Mayar and Mount Keen. Alternatively, head to the sea where beautiful sandy beaches and occasional outcrops of spectacular cliffs make the Angus coastline some of the most spectacular scenery along Scotland's eastern coast. For nature lovers, there is the RSPB Nature reserve at Loch of Kinnordy where migrant species provide interest all year round, from ospreys in the summer to Whooper swans in the winter, or visit the Montrose Basin where the Nature Reserve provides a perfect habitat for many species of bird. For golfers there are many top class courses in the area including the Championship course at Carnoustie and locally the wonderful Edzell course.

All on ground level:

Open plan kitchen living room with wood-burning stove and double futon, bedroom with ziplink super-king/twin bed, bathroom with shower over bath, WC and WHB.

Please Note:

  • The road up to the cottage is a farm track that is tarred, and can be rough in places. The road is suitable for normal cars (no 4x4 required).

    The Byre reviews
What a stunning spot to stay in! We loved the peace and quiet, to say nothing of the stunning views all around. The Byre itself is very cosy and well-equipped and, as a fussy sleeper myself, I really appreciated the comfortable bed! The location is ideal for walking and sight-seeing, and we loved exploring the Pictish history of the area. We can definitely recommend lunch at the Tuck Inn in Edzell: the food was delicious, and the staff so friendly. A fortnight wasn't long enough: we plan to be back again.
    Mrs Whybrow - August 2019
Comfortable small cottage in a quiet location approximately 3 miles from the main road. Beautifully presented one bedroom accommodation. The Byre maybe small but it has a spacious feel to it. Fabulous 360 degree views. Good location for visiting local attractions including harbours and Castles.
    Mrs Shaw - July 2019
We went to The Byre on the first weekend of July. Prior to going, we discovered that the local Fettercairn Show was on the Saturday so went early to spend some time there. Time well spent on a great afternoon. On arrival at The Byre, we found it beautifully situated and very comfortable inside. The cottage is run by the family who have the farm on which its situated and on the evening of our arrival, someone from the family came to see that we were happy with it. We had subsequent meetings with various members of this very hospitable and friendly family and it contributed to a great holiday. If you're interested in hill walking, there are a number of good walks from the back door of the cottage and all round the area. Definitely a cottage we will book again. Ian Ross
    Mrs Ross - July 2019
First class cottage in all respects except the weather! The cottage was spotless, fitted with every need. It was warm and comfortable with excellent scenery all round, there was plenty to do and see, and beautiful walks from the front door. The only slight drawback was the road up to it that was a lot of potholes, gates and cattle grids, but it's worth the effort. Well looked after by the local shepherd, nothing to much trouble and great local Knowledge. The TV and Wi-fi reception are great. A very peaceful week.
    Mr Dunlop - June 2019
The cottage was beautifully presented and well equipped. So comfortable. Situated well into the glen the only neighbours were the cows, sheep and numerous birds. A really peaceful experience. Ideal for getting away from it all but close enough to services if required. A thoroughly lovely holiday experience. Thank you so much.
    Mr Paul - May 2019
Our stay at The Byre was fantastic. The cottage is in beautiful surroundings and our little boy loved the countryside and the local animals. The cottage was spotless and had everything required for our holiday, also provided a high chair for the little one. Great place to escape the hustle and bustle of every day life. The nearby village of Edzell had a great swing park and we enjoyed going to nearby Brechin, Montrose and Arbroath. We would definitely book the cottage again.
    Mrs Graham - May 2019
Because of the frost, the Byre was not available. But we got the Shepherd cottage next door, with us bigger and more luxurious. Had a wonderfull stay, made some nice walks. The road to the cottages need some inprovement.
Mr Van Kampen - February 2019
The Byre's the Best! Our second visit within the year, and whilst I'd prefer the place to remain the best secret ever, it's only fair to share. wonderfully remote location blessed with all mod cons and comforts. A very special place where we will return time and again- as long as the secret isn't shared too widely! George Thomson , Scotland
    Mr Thomson - January 2019
The Byre is just as in the description (and the photos)... if even better. Some 5 miles from the Edzell up the farm track (but paved and easily accessible). You are among the sheep and the cows and the beauty of the Angus Glens. The small croft is warm, comfortable and very well-equipped. We had the most relaxing of weeks here. A friendly welcome from the family. We are already considering booking again for a visit when the fairer spring or summer weather comes back. Comes highly recommended!
    Mr Smith - December 2018
We stayed in the Byre for a week in October. The cottage was spotlessly clean and was well furnished. There was a very comfortable, large bed and the shower was one of the best we have had in a holiday cottage. It was lovely and warm and had the added bonus of the wood burning stove for chilly nights. Edzell was a short drive away and there are plenty of long and short walks in the area. We hope to return for another holiday some time and would definitely recommend to anyone.
    Mrs Brough - October 2018
Lovely, very well equipped cottage in a stunning location. Walking and mountain biking from the front door. Close to the coast as well as the mountains, plus not far from towns and cities for other sightseeing options.
    Mrs Sture - August 2018
Nestled high above Glen Esk it's a real gem of a retreat. Hard to find and you'll need a 4x4 in winter to negotiate the long track in. The farming family who own it couldn't be friendlier and pop by whilst tending to the sheep just to check you're OK which was really nice.
    Mr Park - May 2018
Well equiped cottage; marvellous location. Friendly owners. One small criticism: the road to the cottage is bumpy and slippery (because of the cow dung).
Mr Van Kampen - February 2018
Cottage had everything needed for my stay the owners really have thought of everything, spotlessly clean as well. Situated in a fantastic area for walking, managed up Mount Keen, weather also good considering it was November. Hope to return in the future
    Mrs Sime - November 2017
A cosy cottage tucked away in the Esk Valley foothills to get you away from the hustle & bustle of everyday life. Probably best suited to 2 persons rather than 4 as the sofa bed does not looks that comfortable, however dont let this put you off as this is a real gem. Spotlessly clean with some nice personal touches from the owner.
    Mr Smith - August 2017
The Byre was a great get away from it all holiday in a glorious natural setting. The Cottage was very comfortable with all mod cons. We will definitely try to go back.
    Mr Cornish - May 2017
We were a couple looking for a relaxed getaway, somewhere peaceful and remote. The Byre was perfect for our needs. Hire car helped to get up the farm track (where cows definitely have right of way!) and make the most of getting to some of the more remote tourist attractions but guess you could do it by bike. Hope to be back someday.
    Mr Gilby - March 2017
Great spot off the beaten track. Everything you need for a comfortable stay at an idyllic country retreat. Lovely views, lots of wildlife, cosy evenings by the fire, perfect.
    Mr Ryan - March 2017
We have enjoyed two holidays at the Byre and managed to do loads of different things each time. The location between the mountains and the sea is ideal. The cottage is really comfortable clean and well equipped and the family who host it always welcoming. We will be back!
    Mrs Lathan - August 2016
Lovely cottage in remote setting. Cottage has everything you need for a quiet getaway. Very friendly owners, nothing was too much trouble. Brilliant for people who love walking, bird watching and peace.
    Mrs Luke - August 2016
We spend two weeks over Christmas and New Year 2015/2016. This Cottage is beautiful. All you need into the Cottage and the view around is awesome. Unfortunately the weather wasn't so good. The owners and all of the Family was very friendly. So we can say just good things about this Cottage.
    Mr Weiss - December 2015
We had a brilliant week at this lovely little cottage. It was warm and cosy in the evenings, and the perfect size for the two of us. The location is perfect - isolated, but within easy reach of the village, and the owners were very friendly and helpful. There are plenty of things to do in the area. We did several long walks including ones straight from the door of the cottage. We would also recommend visiting the Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre and Edzell Castle. The cottage was a perfect home-from-home, and we're hoping to go back at some point in the future.
    Miss Southworth - September 2015
We stayed at The Byre for two weeks during summer. It was the perfect base to explore the surrounding areas being not too close to town but then not too far away either. Set in a quiet, rural location on a working farm, it was perfect for us. The house is extremely thermal, never getting too hot or too cold (we witnessed all sorts of weather extremes, even though it was summer!). Inside the house is modern and has all the conveniences you'd require for a comfortable holiday including a fully equipped kitchen, clean white linen & nice big towels. There are several walks that can be started virtually right from the back door, the views from all directions are stunning. The owners are friendly and helpful without being intrusive. We can't recommend this place highly enough, it's excellent value for money. We sincerely hope we will be able to come back one day if we make it back to Scotland.
    Mrs Murphy - June 2015
Beautiful setting, cottage itself was of the highest standard , abundant wild life and stunning scenery - not much more that one could ask for.
    Rev Neill - June 2015
We had a lovely relaxing stay at the Byre. We felt completely at home. We spent our wintery days exploring the hills and villages nearby before returning home for dinner and relaxing infront of the fire. Without being in the area before, we were welcomed with some milk in the fridge and some pancakes and lovely jam. It felt like a family business, that we were accepted in to, the farmers we met were cheery and chatty, Sarah was very communicative, the Aunt kept the Byre lovely and clean, and Isabella's jam was great! We will be back!
    Ms Atkins-pressegh - November 2014
All you could want in a selfcatering cottage plus  the added beauty ot the Angus hills, it makes in all a relaxing and very special place to have a break away from the hustle and bustle of life . We hope to return again in the near future.
    Mrs Chambers - August 2014
The location for starters took our breath away. Being greeted by Sarah was a great personnal touch. The cottage was everything we had hoped and more. The location was peaceful, just what we wanted. The cottage had everything we needed, plus some. For our first trip to Scotland we have come away overwhelmed with the location and local area. We strongly recommend The Byre.
    Mr Jackson - July 2013
Cottage was well equipped, clean and comfortable, set in a wonderful location. Owners were friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Would recommend to anyone wanting a quiet and peaceful holiday property. Only downside was the road leading to it has suffered from weather erosion in certain parts so care needs to be taken on the drive up to the property.
    Mr Rutter - May 2013
If you are looking for a place to get away from the hustle & bustle of everyday life you need look no further. The cottage & welcome are exemplary and the scenery is perfection. If you prefer to stay 'at home' to enjoy the views & the wildlife in the tranquil surroundings of the old byre building refurbished to an exceptionally high standard or partake in some of the many walks in the area (ranging from more strenuous hill walks to gentler more level areas) you will find something to suit every taste. The nearby Brown & White Catterthuns give amazing views and the beach at Lunan Bay is a blue flag beach with beautiful sand. A very friendly area with good local shops in Edzell.
    Mrs Polwart - July 2012
A beautiful part of the country with stunning views. A very well presented cottage, well equipped and clean. A lovely warm welcome from the owners.
    Miss Gulzar - June 2012
We enjoyed a week long stay at the Byre from 7th April 2012. This cottage has only recently been renovated and has been done to an excellent standard. The cottage had all the home comforts required for a relaxing and comfortable holiday and the owner and his niece were very welcoming and friendly. The cottage is in a quiet and remote location and the local area has some beautiful walks, we can recommend the 'Falls of Damff' circular walk in particular for those who enjoy walking and there are some lovely castles in the area a short(ish) drive away for a rainy day. Crathes Castle was particluarly interesting and has beautiful gardens. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Byre and we are already talking about going back for another week later this year.
    Miss Shaw - April 2012
