Description

You will be swept away by this unique, quirky and historical beach house! The Ice House is snuggled into a backdrop of volcanic cliffs behind the dunes of St Cyrus beach and Nature Reserve. This former Skippers quarters and ice storage building is intrinsic to the history of this beautiful area. Originally used by the fishermen to arrange their nets, it was then turned into an ice house in the late 1700’s so that locally netted salmon could be kept then sent to the London market. It is your chance to experience a magical retreat within a truly breathtaking environment.

The interiors are quirky with the original stone walls and vaulted ceilings yet the design has made the most of the light flooding in the front through French windows and doors and through the former ceiling shafts. It is very tastefully presented – wood floors, wood burning stove, 1 kingsize bedroom with en suite, 1 double bedroom self contained in its own wing with en suite and patio doors, a further double bedroom also with patio doors to the front and a spectacular family bathroom with luxury infra red sauna. The open plan kitchen/dining/sitting room is a perfect socialising space and there is a mezzanine area which can be used as a single sleeping area or chill out space whilst still keeping an eye on everything. A perfect holiday retreat for family and friends to get together.

The Ice house enjoys rooftop sea views, is set in its own private 3.5 acre plot which is itself set in several acres of nature reserve with a bridge leading across the dunes to the sea. To the rear you have a cycle track/bridal path leading along paths sheltered by the natural barriers of inland cliffs. Within the garden area is a unique New Zealand inspired fire pit and seating area, 2 sheltered patio areas and a large picnic bench creating a variety of al fresco dining spots. There is a heated outdoor shower ideal for sandy pets and children (or if you just like singing in the rain!).

St Cyrus beach is a hidden gem protected from the ravages of the weather by the natural barrier of inland cliffs and a seaward ridge of sand dunes. The beach stretches for miles of clean perfect sands with lots to explore including a waterfall and caves. From The Ice House there are walks in either direction along the coast and mountains. Within half an hour you can reach St Cyrus village via steps from the beach where The Village Inn has fantastic pub lunches and evening meals and the local coffee shop has a variety of home bakes. Activities such as rock climbing, hand gliding, fishing, horse riding, cycling, golfing to name but a few activities available locally.

Book this house if you want something different, love nature, beaches and views and quirky luxury coastal walks: it is an absolute joy.

    The Ice House reviews
Brilliant place to rest and relax to recharge the batteries. I have been in a lot of places , but this building is one of the more unique places. The house was very comfortable and has everything you could possibly want. Beach is amazing ,plenty of walks nearby.
    Mr Bruce - October 2017
This was our second visit and it was even more perfect than the first. The house is incredible, amazingly comfortable and thanks to the new heating system it was warm and cosy even on the chilly nights. The house was spotlessly clean, had everything we could possibly need and a lot more and we loved the new sofa and chairs. If you can tear yourself away from the house, beach and nature reserve then I'd recommend a visit to Dunnotar Castle and Stonehaven, followed by a visit to the Marine Hotel who have the most amazing selection of beers. We saw a whale on our last night which ended the holiday perfectly and very nearly caught the northern lights - we'll try again on our next visit. Where else could you have an entire beach to yourselves? Absolute perfection.
    Mrs Panter - September 2017
What an amazing house!! It's so big and roomy inside. Each room has a quirky, bright interior. It's been renovated to a high standard indeed with high end white goods. It's location is second to none...over a small walkway you reach the amazing St Cyrus beach, it stretches for miles with a lovely waterfall at the far end. We were even lucky enough to see the Whale!!! our dog loved our early morning walks when it was just us on the beach. There is a Tesco and Aldi in the nearby town St Cyrus also including various other shops to browse around. We found a fabulous sandwich shop called Zappas, you can find it on Google maps, well worth a visit. The owners Pam and Dirk were only a phone call away if we needed them and very responsive indeed. The only thing to is say is it could be sign posted a big bigger than it is and suggested to Pam that she invests in a Guest book for us all to put our feedback in and handy hints for places to visit. Thank you for an amazing stay and we will return one day.
    Mrs Bodman - August 2017
Well, what to say ? The location is great, a couple of hundred yards and you're on a beautiful beach. Walks galore to explore amongst the dunes and grasses. Peregrine and Buzzards behind the house, seabirds, gulls and Pomarin, Arctic skuas along the beach. Highlight being a Humpback Whale close to shore. The space in the house is great, you don't get under each others feet. Sitting in front of the log burner in the evening is bliss. The grandchildren (5+2) loved it, making dens inside or using the tents in the garden or being down on the beach. The hotel in St Cyrus served excellent meals with friendly staff. Not far from Aberdeen and nearby coastal visitor towns. We as a family loved staying there and if we can, will use it again.
    Mr Reid - August 2017
Beautifully situated a small stroll from St Cyrus beach. Walks and cycle tracks directly from the door. The house offers all you need for either a very active or relaxing holiday. Pet owners beware there are a lot of rabbits and the garden is not enclosed, but this would not prevent us from returning. Montrose is just a short drive for shops, activities and Roo's Leap restaurant is worth a visit. Bedrooms are very spacious and the three bathrooms leaves nobody crossed legged. Outdoor shower is a great idea for when you come back from the beach and the outdoor sitting areas allowed the sun worshipers all day comfort. All round great home.
    Mrs Hanson - July 2017
We loved our stay in the Ice House, it's in a perfect position on a national nature reserve. It's just a short walk from the private garden to St. Cyrus beach, which has to be one of the best in the UK. Anyone interested in wildlife or bird watching will be delighted, there's so much to see just from the front door. The house itself is ideal for a family holiday - well equipped and furnished, with a great outdoor space for lounging and BBQ'ing (loved the fire pit!).
    Mr Jones - July 2017
Family holiday at the Ice-House was just perfect. Everything you could need is there for both indoor and outdoor living. Plenty of space and everything has been tastefully and thoughtfully put together. The location is very easy to get to, but leaves you feeling like you're a million miles. Perfect for a relaxing break. Plenty of shops nearby in Montrose. The beach is stunning. Local seafood restaurants providing some of the best and most fresh produce from the sea on your doorstep. Will definitely book to go back again and again with family and friends...
    Ms Barnett - May 2017
Absolutely amazing. A beautiful house on a fabulous stretch of coastline. The location really is exceptional with stunning walks right from the door. The house itself is cosy and comfortable with everything you could possibly need. The owners are really friendly and incredibly helpful and left us to it. It's like a 5 star hobbit hole and a really different and relaxing way to spend a week. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can't wait to go back.
    Mr Mather - April 2017
A stunning property in a superb location. House extremely spacious with everything you need. Very clean and well presented. Only drawbacks with this property are poor Wi-Fi reception which is only expected due to the nature of the structure of the building and maybe a wee bit draughty in the main lounge heating could be better with the sheer size of the lounge and the height of the ceiling although bedrooms and other rooms are nice and warm, otherwise this would be a 5 star property. Brilliant location for dog walking and the outdoors with the beach only a 5 minute walk over the bridge, but still only a short drive into Montrose for essentials. Would like to stay again in the summer to make full use of the fantastic outside space.
    Mr Kinnell - March 2017
