You will be swept away by this unique, quirky and historical beach house! The Ice House is snuggled into a backdrop of volcanic cliffs behind the dunes of St Cyrus beach and Nature Reserve. This former Skippers quarters and ice storage building is intrinsic to the history of this beautiful area. Originally used by the fishermen to arrange their nets, it was then turned into an ice house in the late 1700’s so that locally netted salmon could be kept then sent to the London market. It is your chance to experience a magical retreat within a truly breathtaking environment.

The interiors are quirky with the original stone walls and vaulted ceilings yet the design has made the most of the light flooding in the front through French windows and doors and through the former ceiling shafts. It is very tastefully presented – wood floors, wood burning stove, 1 kingsize bedroom with en-suite, 1 double bedroom self-contained in its own wing with en-suite and patio doors, a further double bedroom also with patio doors to the front and a spectacular family bathroom with luxury infra-red sauna. The open plan kitchen/dining/sitting room is a perfect socialising space and there is a mezzanine area which can be used as a single sleeping area or chill out space whilst still keeping an eye on everything. A perfect holiday retreat for family and friends to get together.

The Ice House enjoys rooftop sea views, is set in its own private 3.5 acre plot which is itself set in several acres of nature reserve with a bridge leading across the dunes to the sea. To the rear you have a cycle track/bridal path leading along paths sheltered by the natural barriers of inland cliffs. Within the garden area is a unique New Zealand inspired fire pit and seating area, 2 sheltered patio areas and a large picnic bench creating a variety of al fresco dining spots. There is a heated outdoor shower ideal for sandy pets and children (or if you just like singing in the rain!).

St Cyrus beach is a hidden gem protected from the ravages of the weather by the natural barrier of inland cliffs and a seaward ridge of sand dunes. The beach stretches for miles of clean perfect sands with lots to explore including a waterfall and caves. From The Ice House there are walks in either direction along the coast and mountains. Within half an hour you can reach St Cyrus village via steps from the beach where The Village Inn has fantastic pub lunches and evening meals and the local coffee shop has a variety of home bakes. Activities such as rock climbing, hand gliding, fishing, horse riding, cycling, golfing to name but a few activities available locally.

Book this house if you want something different, love nature, beaches and views and quirky luxury coastal walks: it is an absolute joy.

    The Ice House reviews
Just had a wonderful two weeks at the Ice House. The house and setting was amazing, just a couple of niggles but did not spoil our holiday - would have been nice to have a pint of milk in the fridge when we arrived, the bedding in the master bedroom was poor with holes on the bottom sheet and dried blood on the quilt cover when the bedding was changed at the start of week 2. Brought some mould remover for the showers and the fridge, so easily sorted but not what you would be expected to do on holiday. The area was incredible, the nature reserve and sand dunes were explored daily and the people were so friendly. The waterfall at the far end of the beach is well worth the walk and we even had a seal following us as we walked the shoreline. A trip to Stonehaven and the Bay Fish and Chip shop is an absolute must!
    Mrs Fallows - June 2019
The Ice House is a very special place indeed. Th house itself is totally unique and very cosy and well furnished. Th outside space is great too and ideal for a dog to run around the enclosed area safely. The setting itself is stunning and so close to such a beautiful sandy beach. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and felt a huge benefit of enjoying the beautiful, tranquil setting . I would highly recommend it as a holiday.
    Mrs Bowers - April 2019
Fantastic house in an amazing location. Quirky unique property with everything you could need in a perfect secluded location. Great huge enclosed garden and 2 minute walk over bridge to the beach. Love the ruggedness of the cliff and the big waves. Dogs love the freedom. Will definitely be back.
    Mrs Smith - March 2019
Along with our sons and their partners we spent three wonderful days in the Ice House during the February mid-term holiday. The house is incredibly comfortable and very well equipped with everything you could possibly need for your stay. The Ice House made an excellent base for exploring the east coast although we were loathe to go very far away... This was a perfect location for long walks along the beach with the dogs and for the more adventurous in our party to swim in the sea.
    Mrs Houston - February 2019
Really has all you could ask for, location, views and amenities. It was the little things taht made a difference, fully equiped kitchen, beautiful bathrooms with under floor heating, and plenty of cosy seating to realx and unwind
    Mrs Carter - December 2018
Beautiful property, well kept with plenty of crockery and pans etc. Two ovens and lots of hob space to make meals for 6. Very comfortable beds. Good Wi-Fi. Good walks in the area. Walk from the door for a few minutes to hit a gorgeous beach. Easy to visit Aberdeen, stonehaven, Arbroath. So much to see and do will have to come again!
    Mrs Donnelly - October 2018
We returned to The Ice House this year as we enjoyed it so much last year. It is a few minutes’ walk from the beach and 10 minutes’ drive from Montrose. The house itself is beautiful and has great facilities.
Mrs Von Kaehne - October 2018
This is a wonderful property located in a beautiful Nature Reseve. We had a very relaxing holiday, and with the beach and dunes just a few yards away, it was a great holiday to take the dogs with us. During the week we often had the beautiful sandy beach to ourselves. On a chilly evening there was nothing better than sitting by the wood burner, with a book and a glass of wine.
    Mr Durrell - September 2018
The Ice House is a fantastic property in a great location. The beach was quite busy over the weekend but peaceful and perfect to escape to during the week. Only drawbacks are the garden isn’t enclosed, we had other people’s dogs coming into the garden from the path below the front of the house and the wilder part of the garden needs a gate across the gap where it meets the track, even though there is little traffic I’d rather not take the chance with my dogs running out. The master (upstairs) bedroom would benefit from a window that can be opened as it is uncomfortably warm overnight even with all the heating off and having the rear door open during the day. Kitchen storage is a bit lacking if you intend to do a large shop to last the week, but there are an abundance of supermarket options in the surrounding area so you won’t be stuck for choice. Dogs loved the wild garden tracks and the beachside location couldn’t be better. All in all our favourite dog-friendly holiday cottage in Scotland and we’ve stayed in loads. We can’t wait to go back!
    Mrs Smith - September 2018
The Ice House is absolutely perfect! There was nothing that we can complain about! The setting was idyllic. We stayed for our 30th wedding anniversary and wanted something special and we got it in the Ice House. I can't recommend it enough! It would be nice to return with friends as it was so spacious. A daily walk on the beach with the dog was only minutes away.
    Mrs Kimpton - September 2018
Well equipped house in a stunning Location. The house was clean and in the kitchen you find everything you need and more. The wonderful, sandy beach is only a short stroll away. So much to see nearby.
    Mr Hacker - August 2018
Wow! Absolutely stunning house and setting. Perfect peaceful getaway with 2 young children, one with special needs who loved the space and peace. The garden was incredibly spacious and perfect for our dogs. The walk to the beach was stunning across the nature reserve. We walked every day around the beach and reserve and didn’t once get bored of not venturing further afield. The house, very impressive! Perfect size for 4 of us, the most amazingly comfortable bed in the master room I could have stayed in it all week! Such a relaxing environment. A few downsides for us were the garden wasn’t totally secure for our dogs so was sometimes a struggle keeping them within the boundaries especially when they could hear other dogs walking past as the nature reserve path ran alongside the garden. This meant we couldn’t keep the huge patio doors open into the garden as the dogs could wander off. Secondly I appreciate the structure of the building but in particular the master bedroom would get very hot but the velux window doesn’t open so no air could get in. And lastly this would have been without a doubt the BEST ever if there was a hot tub!! The massive garden and patio areas were crying out for one!!! Overall though it was a truly fantastic holiday and you won’t be disappointed.
Mr And Mrs Prangnell - August 2018
Marvellous property in a most beautiful and unique location
    Mr Olsson - July 2018
Had a great time, house is amazing and the beach is stunning, what a place to have a break only a few hours drive from my home.
    Mr Lamont - July 2018
This is an amazing place. You need to like isolation and wildlife along with huge beaches and luxury accommodation so stay away if you want discos and bars! The house is very well appointed and the surroundings are stunning It felt like an episode of Springwatch with Perigrines, Roe Deer, Buzzard chicks, swallows, Shelduck etc. Found two fab restaurants The Quayside and Gordon's and had gorgeous food. The local pub is a lovely beach walk away and is very welcoming with decent pub food. Farm shop and pick your own place towards Melrose has great produce and a delightful cafe. Places to visit if you can be bothered to leave. We spent most of our time around the property and dunes and beach. Driftwood fire on the beach on the summer solstice with a bottle of champagne and a BBQ... hard to beat
    Prof Tierney-moore - June 2018
The Ice House was a real treat, beautifully presented and everything we could wish for. We have been self catering with our dog for many years in Scotland and this house rates as one of the best. Comfortable beds, sofa and beautiful bathrooms (top of our requirements when self catering). We were lucky with the weather (although no doubt whatever the forecast the house would be very comfortable) and made use of the garden and fire pit! The wildlife is just out of the door and the walks are superb with the beach just minutes away. The farm shop just down the road (Charleton Fruit Farm) had a lovely supply of fresh picked fruit and asparagus plus a good cup of coffee! Montrose, Arbroath, Glamis Castle, Stonehaven, Lunan Bay, Gordon's Restaurant, Glen Clova plus more were all great places to visit. A brilliant week for our first time to this area - would come again!!
    Mrs Shellard - June 2018
The Ice House at St Cyrus simply has it all , and then some . We were exceptionally lucky with the weather and would love to return one day .
    Mrs Ross - May 2018
Don’t know where to start with reviewing the Ice House as we were and still are a week after returning “blown away” by how beautiful and perfect this property is. From the location right beside the most stunning amazing beach and the great walks to the actual house itself we can’t thank the owners enough for a truly magical stay you are a credit to this place.
    Mr Buchanan - May 2018
Lovely, clean, well appointed house in a beautiful setting. Ideal for three couples looking to talk, walk and relax. The beach, which is a few minutes away over the Gurkha built bridge, is stunning. So much to do and see locally. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Thanks.
    Mrs Lloyd - April 2018
Thoroughly loved every minute at The Ice House. Every little thing had been thought of from the ease of entry to the property to all the wonderful amenities thereafter. Beautiful property and I cannot praise it highly enough. My only complaint would be that when looking to book a return date later this year (particularly over the New year) all the dates we wanted were already taken! I'll have to be quicker off the mark now I've discovered it ...
    Mr Paterson - March 2018
A quirky but well thought out house. Clean, comfortable and well equipped. A short walk takes you to a beautiful but quiet beach. Plenty of things to do nearby. Teenagers may find the inconsistent Wi-fi a drawback but soon become fans of Dutch Shuttleboard! Didn’t want to leave.
Owners Response: "Thank you for your review. We have now changed to a permanent mobile broadband which is totally reliable replacing BT. It gives good coverage around the house where as the previous BT WiFi struggled to reach the bedrooms. I hope you can return one day in the future."
    Mr Ward - February 2018
Brilliant place to rest and relax to recharge the batteries. I have been in a lot of places , but this building is one of the more unique places. The house was very comfortable and has everything you could possibly want. Beach is amazing ,plenty of walks nearby.
    Mr Bruce - October 2017
This was our second visit and it was even more perfect than the first. The house is incredible, amazingly comfortable and thanks to the new heating system it was warm and cosy even on the chilly nights. The house was spotlessly clean, had everything we could possibly need and a lot more and we loved the new sofa and chairs. If you can tear yourself away from the house, beach and nature reserve then I'd recommend a visit to Dunnotar Castle and Stonehaven, followed by a visit to the Marine Hotel who have the most amazing selection of beers. We saw a whale on our last night which ended the holiday perfectly and very nearly caught the northern lights - we'll try again on our next visit. Where else could you have an entire beach to yourselves? Absolute perfection.
    Mrs Panter - September 2017
What an amazing house!! It's so big and roomy inside. Each room has a quirky, bright interior. It's been renovated to a high standard indeed with high end white goods. It's location is second to none...over a small walkway you reach the amazing St Cyrus beach, it stretches for miles with a lovely waterfall at the far end. We were even lucky enough to see the Whale!!! our dog loved our early morning walks when it was just us on the beach. There is a Tesco and Aldi in the nearby town St Cyrus also including various other shops to browse around. We found a fabulous sandwich shop called Zappas, you can find it on Google maps, well worth a visit. The owners Pam and Dirk were only a phone call away if we needed them and very responsive indeed. The only thing to is say is it could be sign posted a big bigger than it is and suggested to Pam that she invests in a Guest book for us all to put our feedback in and handy hints for places to visit. Thank you for an amazing stay and we will return one day.
    Mrs Bodman - August 2017
Well, what to say ? The location is great, a couple of hundred yards and you're on a beautiful beach. Walks galore to explore amongst the dunes and grasses. Peregrine and Buzzards behind the house, seabirds, gulls and Pomarin, Arctic skuas along the beach. Highlight being a Humpback Whale close to shore. The space in the house is great, you don't get under each others feet. Sitting in front of the log burner in the evening is bliss. The grandchildren (5+2) loved it, making dens inside or using the tents in the garden or being down on the beach. The hotel in St Cyrus served excellent meals with friendly staff. Not far from Aberdeen and nearby coastal visitor towns. We as a family loved staying there and if we can, will use it again.
    Mr Reid - August 2017
Beautifully situated a small stroll from St Cyrus beach. Walks and cycle tracks directly from the door. The house offers all you need for either a very active or relaxing holiday. Pet owners beware there are a lot of rabbits and the garden is not enclosed, but this would not prevent us from returning. Montrose is just a short drive for shops, activities and Roo's Leap restaurant is worth a visit. Bedrooms are very spacious and the three bathrooms leaves nobody crossed legged. Outdoor shower is a great idea for when you come back from the beach and the outdoor sitting areas allowed the sun worshipers all day comfort. All round great home.
    Mrs Hanson - July 2017
We loved our stay in the Ice House, it's in a perfect position on a national nature reserve. It's just a short walk from the private garden to St. Cyrus beach, which has to be one of the best in the UK. Anyone interested in wildlife or bird watching will be delighted, there's so much to see just from the front door. The house itself is ideal for a family holiday - well equipped and furnished, with a great outdoor space for lounging and BBQ'ing (loved the fire pit!).
    Mr Jones - July 2017
Family holiday at the Ice-House was just perfect. Everything you could need is there for both indoor and outdoor living. Plenty of space and everything has been tastefully and thoughtfully put together. The location is very easy to get to, but leaves you feeling like you're a million miles. Perfect for a relaxing break. Plenty of shops nearby in Montrose. The beach is stunning. Local seafood restaurants providing some of the best and most fresh produce from the sea on your doorstep. Will definitely book to go back again and again with family and friends...
    Ms Barnett - May 2017
Absolutely amazing. A beautiful house on a fabulous stretch of coastline. The location really is exceptional with stunning walks right from the door. The house itself is cosy and comfortable with everything you could possibly need. The owners are really friendly and incredibly helpful and left us to it. It's like a 5 star hobbit hole and a really different and relaxing way to spend a week. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can't wait to go back.
    Mr Mather - April 2017
A stunning property in a superb location. House extremely spacious with everything you need. Very clean and well presented. Only drawbacks with this property are poor Wi-Fi reception which is only expected due to the nature of the structure of the building and maybe a wee bit draughty in the main lounge heating could be better with the sheer size of the lounge and the height of the ceiling although bedrooms and other rooms are nice and warm, otherwise this would be a 5 star property. Brilliant location for dog walking and the outdoors with the beach only a 5 minute walk over the bridge, but still only a short drive into Montrose for essentials. Would like to stay again in the summer to make full use of the fantastic outside space.
    Mr Kinnell - March 2017
