This was a perfect house for two pensioners who like their home comforts. We were glad not to have to use the spiral staircase and we think the difficulty of using it should be emphasised in the brochure: really for youngsters only! The fact that blankets WERE supplied should be made clear. We would have valued a radio as we are not TV fans (TV radio not good). The length of the journey from Ellery to the main road should be emphasised. Helpful comments we hope because we really thought everything was A1.

The Lodge at Ellary is located on a very quiet single track road at the head of Loch Coalisport. It's about a 20 minute drive to Lochgilphead, where food and so forth may be found. The house is well equipped and has a spiral staircase to the first floor. Heating is by electric storage heaters and a coal fire. In cold weather one may get through quite a bit of fuel, although temperatures were kind during my stay. I did see a fox in the garden one evening and there were a few traces of otter at the point off the road on the way down to the estate office. I much enjoyed using the private estate road from Ellary to Kilmory. The key is available to guests on the estate. The road is not for the faint hearted and has very few passing places. I was lucky. A wonderful remote place to see. I went there alone but there's room for six.

This cottage is set in a beautiful estate, perfect for those seeking to get away from it all. Forget mobile phone coverage, there is an old fashioned pay phone, but there is internet. However, despite being impressively clean, the bedding needed replacing and smelt of wet dogs complete with dog hair on the blankets. If you own a dog then this will not be a problem I am sure, we do not and I possess a strong sense of smell. The decor and fixtures and fittings are tired and need updating in every room apart from the kitchen, which is lovely and bright. In fact the vacuum cleaner when used, smelt like it has sucked up an old dog by accident! Access to upstairs is via the smallest of spiral staircases, something I hadn't realised, and having mobility issues this was a challenge for me and my tall husband; who couldn't stand up in the shower or indeed the entire upstairs or fit on the small 4ft6 double bed. You also have to pay for your electricity, which is rather old fashioned and needs to be done at the main house, which is about 2.5miles further away in the opposite direction to the exit. If this needs to continue to be the case, I'd prefer to have someone come down to the cottage to collect payment & be handed the key.
Owners Response: "Thanks for taking the time to leave some feedback. We are glad that you found the property very clean - however if you had only informed us that you had an issue with the bedding or the hoover, we would have happily replaced it straight away for you (there is somebody around 24/7, and we keep spares of everything). The shower is a standard over-bath height, the bed is a standard double, and the spiral staircase is steep - all things which are stated in the listing. Decoration and fixtures/fittings are very well represented by the photos in the listing, with the exception of the new carpets which were laid throughout the house the week prior to your arrival. We are very pleased that we now have a 4G signal on EE and Vodafone (although O2 is still non-existent), having gone without until last year due to our remote location - although we do appreciate this is normality for most people living in less isolated locations. As we mentioned to you during your stay, you were welcome to leave cash in the cottage on departure for the electricity if you wanted to head straight off, or indeed just call us (for free from the payphone provided) with card details and we could have put it through remotely for you. We would also have been happy to come down and collect the money in person from you."

My husband and I, and the puppy, had a marvellous time. The Lodge was spotless and in an amazing location - the loch and mountains on 3 sides. We had some lovely walks, my husband enjoyed going fishing and the puppy, Penny, loved the water and beach. The garden to the Lodge was all enclosed which was lovely as we could let Penny out on her own without the worry of whether she would go onto the road. The Lodge is in a very quiet lane - perfect holiday away from the hustle and bustle of normal life. Definitely recommend it for anyone wanting a 'get away from it all' holiday.
