From the outside, the Old Laundry appears to be a particularly appealing stone cottage but once inside there is a sense of gracious living and a much bigger house than you might expect. The large living room looks across the gorgeous gardens towards the hills and Loch More. An open fire makes this a truly stylish, traditional and welcoming house. The bedrooms are extremely comfortable – beds to sink into and crisp white linens so you are assured of a wonderful sleep in the peace of this stunning corner of Sutherland. The only sounds are the animals that inhabit this SSSI estate or the burn bubbling through the garden.

The new kitchen is a wonderful spacious room complete with a walk-in chill room. A lovely sun room surrounds the building and there are charming views across Loch More and to the mountains around. Nestled at the entrance to Strath Stack, the well maintained garden is enchanting with a burn running through it and in the Autumn, salmon spawn within yards of the drawing room windows. The spacious drawing room, with its extremely comfortable furniture and antiques, is made more welcoming with a lovely open fire and provides the perfect setting in which to unwind after a day outdoors. There is the added bonus of 2 hours housekeeping a day.

From here you are within easy striking distance of the cliffs and beaches of the north coast or you can explore the thousands of acres of wilderness that surround you. Whether a keen hill walker or a more modest walker, there is something for everyone here and you will be awed by the landscapes and luxury.

The Old Laundry sits at the heart of the tiny hamlet of Achfary which, complete with its own traditionally built school, is at the centre of the estate. Surrounding the house are thousands of acres of glorious wilderness and magnificent mountains and lochs – truly an extraordinary place. There is a myriad of wildlife on the estate from deer to eagles, otters and the rare black throated divers and much more. In season you can fish the hill lochs for brown trout and you can walk for miles and miles. Pristine beaches are nearby and you are only ½ hour away from the cliffs of the north at Cape Wrath.

This is a wonderful house in what must be one of the most magnificent parts of Scotland. The attentive and knowledgeable estate staff can arrange wildlife viewing trips, both on the estate and in the estate’s fully equipped boats to Handa Island and the surrounding sea lochs if conditions permit. Luxurious picnics can be arranged in remote locations. If you love the landscapes and wilderness as well as a touch of luxury at the end of the day, then this is for you!

    The Old Laundry reviews
As a family of 4 (two teenage children) plus 2 dogs we found a haven in the Old Laundry that ticked just about all the boxes. Tricia's welcome cake didn't last long, the only grumble we could muster was that it wasn't automatically replenished when finished! We would have had no qualms over receiving a bill from her at the end of the week for non-stop Lemon Drizzle Cake, although the waistbands would have been under immense strain. My wife and I were 99% delighted to be without a reliable internet signal (it's amazing how it has almost become one of life's necessities), the teenagers less so, but a trip back to the "good old days" where we entertained ourselves, enjoyed the great outdoors and each other's company where we actually spoke to one another turned out to be a good thing. A valuable lesson for the kids who were the better for it. The dogs loved the open grounds and the burn running through them and were, in the most part, mindful of the beautifully tended gardens - the chase after a mouse through one of the borders was a low point admittedly but a bottle of bubbly as an apology for the understandably irritated gardener seem to help put matters right along with our reassurance that we were as appreciative of her horticultural efforts as she has every right to be, they are a wonderful part of the "Achfary experience". If you like the hustle and bustle of modern day life or you want to at least have it close by in case of any withdrawal then The Old Laundry is not for you. If you want a very comfortably appointed place, almost in the middle of nowhere, to stay for a break away from all that then it is.

If you are looking for a top spec property with doorstep access to some of the most beautiful walks and views in Sutherland then I cannot imagine anywhere else that would exceed the offerings of The Old Laundry. Head out of the front door and you can walk around Loch More, up a steep climb and you have breathtaking views, drop back into the glen and you are in amongst a variety of lochs, overshadowed by the looming mountains above. From the rear of the property you can head straight up the forestry track and either skirt the foot of Ben Stack to a variety of hill lochs or take the route to the summit. A short drive towards Scourie or the coast past kinlochbervie and you arrive at the tropical beaches, albeit with sea temperatures a tad lower those those of the West Indies that they imitate . As for the property, everything is a cut above the norm and the housekeeper was a surprising but very welcome extra who made sure everything was in order and made up the open fire each day. Loved it and can’t wait to come back in warmer seasons to fish all the hill lochs.
