Description

The School House is a large and welcoming detached villa on the outskirts of the village of Shiskine, ideal for large families or groups. Originally built around 1900, it was previously used to provide accommodation to the teaching staff of the nearby primary school but has recently undergone extensive modernisation and renovation to provide high quality accommodation, whilst maintaining many of the features and charm of the original building.

The accommodation benefits from large, light and well-proportioned rooms, all with open outlooks to the Shiskine Valley and surrounding countryside, and the house has been furnished to a high standard with a focus on making it as comfortable and homely for guests as possible.   There is a large enclosed garden ideal for families with young children and dogs. 

With easy access to the beach and picturesque harbour of Blackwaterfoot, the location of The School House benefits from a range of local attractions and activities including golf, tennis, walking, cycling and horse-riding.  It would also be particularly suited to parties of golf enthusiasts wishing to enjoy the famous 12 hole Shiskine Golf Course and would make an ideal base from which to explore all that the Isle of Arran has to offer.

Guests can look forward to fresh bread from the local bakery in Blackwaterfoot, where there are also many excellent restaurants. Leisure facilities, including a pool, are available at the The Kinloch Hotel and are open to the public.

    The School House reviews
    The School House in Shiskine is well situated, on the other side of The String, for exploring Arran. The house itself, beside the new school, is lovely. It’s well fitted out, with a great kitchen/dinner and outside space to eat (when the weather is nice). The living room has Freeview and the WiFi is quick for on island. We stayed with our dog and the hard floor on the ground floor made tidying up easy. There are some games for kids to play on wet weather days too. The local pub, Baker & butcher (Blackwaterfoot) are all well worth a visit as are the nearby standing stones. A lovely stay in a great cottage.

    Lovely spacious house on the beautiful Isle of Arran. We were a party of 8 with 2 dogs and this property met our needs perfectly. It was clean and comfortable with ample seating in both the lounge and dining area. Convenient for the beach at Blackwaterfoot, but nowhere is Arran is too far away. Some of us used it as a base for playing Arran's 7 wonderful golf courses using the Arran golf pass whilst others explored the island. We particularly enjoyed the walk to King's Cave through the woods, the sandwich shack at Lochranza and the hotel bar at Kildonan. Goat Fell proved a challenge for the adults, if not the dogs or younger members of the party! Would highly recommend.

    The school house is a fantastic holiday home that is well equipped and incredibly spacious. The garden is a great space and all enclosed for our dogs. Some fab places to visit close by- thyme cafe in Machrie had fantastic food and brilliant views. 25min walk to Blackwaterfoot , although it’s on a road it isn’t too busy. Bus service very handy too. Perhaps it goes without saying but you are right next to the primary school.

    This property could have been stunning. It's inland and next to a school which we knew as we were already on the island when we booked but that didn't bother us. The front of the property and the upstairs were immaculate however the back garden needed fencing, tidying and finishing. The downstairs had not one door that closed effectively and had dirty washing in two rooms. The amount of dog hair and smell was unacceptable. We could not vaccuum as the vaccuum cleaner smelled even more so of dog so we had to wash the floors upon arrival !! The TV does not pick up the sky channels as promised and we were left with an intermittent BBC1. Upon texting the owner three times we were told to use our own devices as no-one could fix it! We stayed in May and since then the owner has refused to reply to our emails however Cottages and Castles have, therefore the bad taste left sits with the owner.
    Owners Response: "Many thanks for your feedback. I’m sorry you found your stay less than satisfactory. I agree that to find dirty laundry and dog hair in the property is completely unacceptable and this is far from our normal standards. I have addressed this issue with our housekeeper. Our property is dog friendly and nearly all our guests bring dogs. We have never received any negative feedback regarding dog smells in our property but in response to your feedback we have taken additional steps to address any residual dog smells. We are a little confused about your comment regarding a need for fencing. The garden is fully enclosed. We have installed some fence posts along the wall at the back of the garden, as we plan to put a trellis above the wall to further improve privacy, so we assume this is what you are referring to. Regarding the TV- we do not have sky TV and do not advertise that we do. I am sorry you felt we did not respond quickly enough to your messages regarding the TV. We both work and have a young family so are not always able to respond immediately but always try to get back to guests as soon as we can. When I had replied a few hours after your first message I had advised that occasionally there can be breaks in the TV signal due to the location of the house but suggested that you could access Iplayer etc through the PlayStation and could use the fire stick if you had an account. I’m sorry if you felt this was leaving you to your own devices. The TV was working fully before you arrived and after you left so I can only assume this was a temporary issue. I am aware that you have been in touch directly with C&C and they passed on your feedback but we have not received emails from yourselves since your stay."

    A lovely house with adequate parking though on quite a busy road. Garden was secure for 2 dogs n 2 kids. We enjoyed our stay and would go again even though we couldnt get any hot water to the tap in the downstairs toilet, not ideal if trying to get kids to wash hands b4 meals. Great kitchen/diner, great audio system though couldnt get anything other than freeview channels on the telly.

    This is an amazing holiday let very spacious. It has a secure garden which was fantastic for our dog. Your 1 1/2 miles from Shiskine very easy walk to the local kinloch hotel and there swimming pool. The house has all mod cons very relaxing place to stay. The owners are very helpful. We left some clothes behind and the owner posted them to us at her own expense Just a brilliant place

    This was our first visit to Arran and we couldn't have picked a better place to stay. The School House is a gorgeous property in a stunning location, and the owners were extremely helpful and accommodating. It is clear to see that a lot of care and attention has been taken to maintain a number of the original features in the house, but at the same time it has all the modern conveniences you would expect from a high end holiday let. The location is gorgeous, beautiful views over Shiskine Valley but less than 5 minutes by car to Blackwaterfoot with it's lovely beach, golf course and shops (would highly recommend the butcher). We found it an excellent base from which to explore the island. We will definitely be booking to return to The School House next year, but will plan to stay for 2 weeks as 1 was just too short. Many thanks again for your help in making our holiday in Arran so special.

    Cottages & Castles Ltd. (acting as agents for property owners) provides a guarantee for tenants who have to cancel their holiday at a cottage.

    If it is necessary to cancel your holiday, for any of the reasons A 1-5 below, you may do so at any time up until the close of business on the last working day before your tenancy commences and we will refund your balance. Your deposit is not refundable. If you have made a late booking and paid in full you will receive your payment minus the normal deposit sum (usually 30%).

    There is no charge for this holiday protection – it is included in the cost of your holiday. Please note that the protection does not apply to holidays in our properties with codes beginning with P (usually castles, mansions and lodges).

    Deposits may be transferred to a different date for a holiday at the same property within 12 months of the original holiday date, subject to availability, but not, however, for a different property. If the new booking is at a higher rate the tenant must pay the extra cost. No refund will be made if the new date is at a lower rate.

    A:
    1. Death, accidental bodily injury, or illness (excluding pre-existing or chronic illness/conditions, or illness arising through epidemics or pandemics)
    a) the Proposer and/or persons with whom he/she has arranged to travel.
    b) any close relative or business associate of the Proposer or of any person with whom he/she has arranged to travel or arranged to meet at the specified holiday establishment. We will require appropriate documentary evidence of illness or bodily injury from a registered medical practitioner. This evidence must state that the Proposer is unfit to travel.

    2. Jury service, witness call or unemployment through redundancy of the Proposer after the date of booking and prior to the commencement date of the holiday.

    3. Fire or theft which is the subject of an insurance claim at the Insured’s main residence or business premises within seven days before commencement of the holiday.

    4. Occupational postings not contemplated at the time the holiday is booked.

    5. Cancellation or curtailment of scheduled transport services due to strikes, riots or civil commotion, but limited to the cost of alternative transport up to £50 per person for the outward journey only.

    But not, however:

    B:
    1. Disinclination to travel.

    2. Failure of public or private transport.

    3. Suicide, attempted suicide, insanity, the influence of intoxicating liquor or the effect of drugs not taken in accordance with treatment prescribed and directed by a qualified medical practitioner or booking a holiday which is or would be against the advice of a registered medical practitioner.

    4. Pregnancy unless problems occur which prevent the person travelling. A  verification must be signed by a registered medical practitioner to this effect

    5. Any loss which is otherwise insured.

    6. Holiday accommodation booked outside Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands
