If you close your eyes and imagine the most picturesque, romantic Scottish Highland scene, the chances are it will look like this.

The Shell at Ardtur enjoys the most spectacular setting with outstanding views across Loch Linnhe to the mountains of Kingairloch with the Isles of Lismore and Shuna and the historic Castle Stalker.

This lovely holiday house, approached by a long tree-lined private drive, is located on the edge of the pretty Argyll fishing village of Port Appin, half way between Fort William and Oban. Newly renovated and extended to maximise its exceptional position, this inspiring self-catering property offers everything you could wish for in the way of luxury, peace and relaxation.

Throughout, the interiors are beautifully presented with a perfect mix of antique and contemporary creating a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Cooks will delight at the large, well designed and generously equipped kitchen and the long dining table is a wonderful gathering place. The impressive double height sitting room with its rich oak floor, central log burner and huge glass front makes the most of the views and when the patio doors are pulled back this exceptional open-plan living space is at one with the outside. From here you can enjoy the magical changing light and colours as spectacular sunsets disappear over the horizon or marvel at the enchanting morning mist skimming the loch.

Sleeping up to 10 guests in five stylishly decorated bedrooms, great care and attention has been taken to provide everything needed for a memorable self-catering break with deep mattresses, crisp linen, generous fluffy towels plus many other thoughtful touches. The front king size bedroom suite, cleverly positioned on the mezzanine level, offers a secluded retreat and the spacious ground floor bedroom with its luxurious super-king bed and ensuite shower room makes it ideal for the less-abled guest with unrestricted wheelchair access.

Stroll down to the beautiful and peaceful shoreline where you will find a long shingle and sand beach with an abundance of shells and discover the amazing wildlife that thrives in and around this beautiful sea loch. Seals, porpoises and dolphins can all be spotted, as well a large variety of sea and coastal birds including magnificent white-tailed eagles. Port Appin, with its award-winning seafood restaurant and renowned hotel, can also be reached by walking along the shoreline. There are regular passenger ferries from the village to the Island of Lismore and the cycle track from Glencoe to Oban can be reached by crossing the nearby impressive Jubilee Footbridge and boardwalk over the tidal marshes.

    The Shell at Ardtur reviews
This house is ideal for family celebrations and reunions or simply friends getting together for ‘time out’. It’s a perfect house and has everything you need and the location is simply fabulous! The view is AMAZING! From the kitchen window you see a walled garden with seasonal fruit and a little deer sneaks in - so cute! You can watch bats flying about at night outside from the lounge area and yachts sailing by during the day! The Pier house has good food/but is a bit pricey and has changed ownership recently the inn on the main road is definitely worth a visit (perfect steaks) and very reasonable. Easy walks are along beach/jubilee Bridge/the one to the arch behind the Oier house/the Fairy Bridge which worth going to see and in Oban go to see McCaigs tower lovely view from top of hill! The ferry to Lismore is a must and the Museum cafe is excellent for food! The island of Seil is a must and the wee boat to Easedale and langoustine food in the pub is as fresh as you will get- it was a great adventure! Enjoy!! We did! It was perfect!
    Mrs Smith - August 2019
We had a wonderful holiday in this beautiful house. Anything I say cannot do the scenery and views from your own garden justice. The house is so well thought out providing a large kitchen and dining area (perfect for those big family meals or as we found out ideal for evening board games) and a stunning large lounge with gorgeous log burner and a full height window onto the stunning Loch view. The kitchen is fantastic, it has everything you could possibly need and more and being open plan to the dining table whoever was cooking never found themselves to be isolated. The five bedroom are perfect, they provided the perfect sleep and escape haven! The bathrooms were all impeccable. The house was presented to the highest standard with everything thought of. It was spotlessly clean and an absolute delight to stay in. We all loved our stay at the Shell; adults, children and dogs! The direct access on to the Loch beach was fantastic, 99% of the time we had the whole beach to ourselves. We have stayed in lots of beautiful holiday homes throughout the UK and some we revisit but this place has topped them all. I don’t think anywhere will beat that view and all the stylish, high end comfort the house provides. Add to it the hospitality of the owners who live nearby who manage to get the balance of being welcoming whilst respecting your privacy down to perfection. A truly wonderful, well hidden, private gem.
    Mr Brady - August 2019
Superb property, very high end facilities, plenty of bathrooms & privacy, good family spaces & very quiet & peaceful. Pierhouse very good as was the Waterfront Fishouse in Oban, although Oban is very crowded.
    Mrs Burgess - August 2019
It was a fantastic stay. The house was well furnished and very very clean and tidy. A designer house. Everything brand new. The views are stunning maybe the best we ever had. It is a very quiet place. And you can easily have a lovely swim when the tide is high.
Miss De Ruiter - July 2019
We absolutely loved our week at The Shell. There were seven of us staying with a dog and we couldn't have been more comfortable. Everything had been thought of ... White Company bedding; huge selection of kitchen utensils ,plenty of crockery, cutlery, saucepans, large cooker, great fridge with ice and water dispenser ; logs for the fire and even barbecue charcoal supplied and refreshed. We really appreciated all the careful thought the owners had put into this fabulous, warm ,spacious holiday home. The views were spectacular particularly at sunset and we had many wonderful walks around the outstandingly beautiful local area including Castle Stalker, Lismore Island ,Glencoe .... I'm sure we'll be back !

The Shell at Ardtur provide us all with a first class facility in a lovely part of Scotland. The property is peacefully situated yet easily accessible from the main road. The alterations to the former gardeners cottage has resulted in a lovely property that is highly functional for a larger party. The bedrooms are roomy, the kitchen and dining areas are large with good work surfaces and high quality appliances. The lounge is very spacious and has a gorgeous outlook across the loch. All in all the house is perfect for a large family or group of adults looking for a base to explore the local area. Restaurants and pubs available in the area provide the opportunity to eat out well on good quality local produce for a range of prices, should you so wish. Several are within easy walking distance using quite roads and paths or by walking along the shoreline. Outdoor activities are plentiful with numerous hills to be walked, the opportunity to cycle on the Appin peninsula or to range further using the cycle paths to both Oban and Fort William. Water sports are also available and if you take your own canoe you can launch from the loch side in front of the house. Sitting outside and taking in the fresh air and magnificent views is also another great experience to be recommended and enjoyed. Superb!
    Mr Bertram - May 2019
The Shell is situated in the most amazing location. Remote yet not isolated. We found it to be an excellent base for our holiday needs, being quite central to visit many areas of Scottish beauty and ideal for walking too. Local shop well stocked and restaurants providing first class meals. Very well equipped, everything one could ask for, overlooked and a very warm and friendly welcome by the owners. Thank you for our wonderful stay.
    Mr Smith - April 2019
Luxury, lots of space, beautiful location, wonderful.
    Mrs Munro - March 2019
I am writing on behalf of the group of friends who were fortunate to have booked “The Shell” in Port Appin for a short break from the 4th to 8th March. The house was beautiful with most amazing views and we loved coming home to light the fire in the evenings and enjoy all the facilities of the house. However, I feel that it’s important to give feedback on a couple of negative areas of concern. The Oven. The main oven was not working, which we only heard about following a phone call shortly before we departed, by which time three of the ladies had prepared evening meals that were ready to go into the oven. Unfortunately the dishes wouldn’t fit into the small oven, for items such as a large filo pastry pie, dauphinoise potatoes and a large casserole etc. The guide for the small oven was eventually found in a rather thick instructions book, that was not that easy to follow, in particular to match the symbols in the book to those on the selector control on the oven. Perhaps a simple A4 sheet would be more user friendly for the next group visiting. As there was only one shelf in the small oven, some of the first meal got rather burned having to be put on the bottom on that oven. Cleaning. We were also a little disappointed in that the house needed some floor cleaning, and a fresh dust and hoover when we arrived. The kitchen drawer for the pots was very sticky and oily and unfortunately there was no wash up liquid or cloths to clean this, so we purchased these the next day at the local shop. Despite these issues, we did have a great time at Port Appin and loved the area. Thank you very much
Owners Response: "Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at the Shell. We are pleased you found the house and its views beautiful. We are sorry that the larger oven was not working during your visit. This has been fixed now, but we are really sorry that it affected your stay. Fortunately, all the appliances at the Shell are new, and as a result, covered by the manufacturer's warranty. The manufacturer's engineer for the oven is based in Glasgow, this resulted in an unfortunate delay in correcting the fault. We can only apologise again that the food prepared was spoiled and that you had to use the smaller oven. We will mention the pot drawers to our cleaning service to make sure this is immediately addressed. They do clean the floors and carpets before all our guests arrive, but we will pass on your comments and suggest extra care is taken. The happiness of our guests is of the utmost importance to us, and we really appreciate your feedback. We strive to provide a truly exceptional experience at the Shell. We encourage our guests to let us know of any problems that may occur during their stay, welcoming the opportunity to rectify these as quickly as possible."
    Mrs Heather - March 2019
Just a fantastic house. Well equipped and superb finish.
    Mr Roe - February 2019
The Shell is an immaculate house, perfect for a group of friends to relax together and catch up. It has been recently renovated and finished to a very high standard. We thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful living room with its log stove and lovely views out to sea. (We were only sorry that the grey skies meant we couldn’t enjoy them fully.) The Christmas tree was a very nice festive surprise.
    Ms Bannatyne - January 2019
Beautiful house with double-storey vistas, making full use of stunning scenery. Very comfortable for our party of 9, with the ground-floor bedroom suite particularly useful for our older family members. Quiet end-of-lane location with easy access to the shore, which was a real bonus for kayaking. Generally well equipped but with surprisingly small stack of plates, glasses, cutlery, mugs given the numbers it caters for. Lots of high-spec fixtures and fittings and all beautifully presented. Highly recommended.
    Mr Furness - September 2018
The Shell was perfect in every way. Stunning view from the lounge, warming wood burner, fully equipped kitchen. Brilliant bedrooms and bathrooms. We spent a week here on a grown-up family holiday and it was spot on. We went walking in the local area, particularly along the short front to Port Appin or Castle Stalker. We enjoyed a few meals at The Pierhouse too. It was amazing to watch Storm Ali coming in across the mountains opposite. We saw seals, herons and other birds. Can't wait to re-book.
    Dr Geoghegan - September 2018
Very clever modernisation, very spacious, amazing lounge with fabulous views. Very well equipped kitchen. Luxurious bathrooms.
    Mr Stanley - June 2018
This is a property our family have visited for years, pre-renovation so we are familiar with the area. The renovation itself is outstanding, done with sympathy and love for the original building with a superb attention to detail. The property is large, spacious and faultlessly designed. The views are out of this world. For a new rental, the standard of equipment and furnishings were spot on, I cannot think of anything that had been missed. Excellent WIFI connection and mod-cons as expected. There is a large bootroom which makes life with dogs so much easier. It is warm and perfect for them to cosy in after a long walk. There are plenty of short and long walks directly from the house. Easy access to the shore via a field below and a short, easy walk to Castle Stalker and beyond. The boat trip leaving from the pier in the village is well worth a shot. Fantastic local knowledge and insight. It takes you right passed the house. Many thanks to the hosts here for a wonderful week and we will most certainly return. Absolutely faultless.
    Mrs Freeland - Cook - May 2018
A very special four days to get family and friends together from Tasmania, and Scotland. The Shell was a spectacular venue, a stunning house with everything we needed including a bathroom or shower room for each couple. The house was so well designed for a large family gathering and everything we needed was provided. The view from the wonderful cathedral window was glorious especially at sunset. Bar meals at The Pierhouse were delicious and sleeping baby in her pram was made welcome. Castle Stalker View Cafe did us a great breakfast and also a very good lunch. Five stars all round.
    Mrs Davidson - May 2018
The house is fabulous and very welcoming. Lovely touches of flowers and treats. The view is beautiful. However the surrounding area had limited safe ,short walk opportunities for our dogs. We enjoyed a variety of days exploring the wider area despite the wet weather. The beach at Ganavan was even good in driving rain. Had a nice meal at the Creagan Inn where dogs are welcome.
    Mr North - April 2018
The photos can't do the views justice, they really are something special. To be honest we felt the same about the house. We couldn't fault the location, ideal for some privacy but plenty to do if you don't mind a wee bit of a drive. We enjoyed a nice seafood meal at the nearby restaurant beside the ferry terminal, took the 'ferry' and went cycling around Lismore. Had a day in Oban, boys went sea fishing and we did the distillery tour. Took our Dinghy out on the water that you can access from the bottom of the garden, the boys did a bit of island hopping and a crazy friend of ours went swimming. We went with a group of friends and two 15 year old boys. The owners were lovely and couldn't have done more to assist. A super week was had by all, just what we needed and we will definitely be back. Ms McClellan April 2018
    Ms Mcclellan - April 2018
A wonderful property with quiet location and outstanding views. Equipped to an extremely high standard. The owners made every effort to make us welcome whist ensuring privacy. The log burner in the lounge was extremely efficient and the high ceiling provided lovely acoustics for music making with friends during the week. The bedroom layouts and en-suite facilities make this an ideal property for adults sharing. The large entrance lobby was great for airing outdoor activity equipment and useful for unloading and loading the vehicles at the start and end of week too.
    Mrs Martin - March 2018
