If you want to get away from it all and enjoy some of the most beautiful countryside in Scotland then come to The Smithy. On the edge of the River Bladnoch sits this cute holiday cottage with over 10 miles of privately owned salmon and trout fishing, offering unrivalled opportunities for the visiting angler.

Fishing, riding, shooting, hill walking, bird watching, star gazing or just lazing around by the river are only a few options when holidaying here. Also in close proximity is the Galloway Forest Park, Britain’s largest forest park with 300 square miles of mixed landscapes and an array of activities to enjoy including one of the 7 Stanes - mountain biking heaven. Also, local beaches offer a choice of water sports. Only a short drive away is "Scotlands Book Town" - Wigtown, Bladnoch Distillery, The Gem Rock Museum and so much more. This recently restored and modernised self catering semi-detached cottage offers cosy and comfortable accommodation on one level and sits in a large garden with wrought iron gates for privacy.

Entrance to the holiday cottage through the back door takes you into the very well equipped new dining room/kitchen. To the left is the welcoming lounge with open fire with comfortable furniture and plenty of  games and books. The peaceful master bedroom has beautiful views over the garden to the river and beyond, housing a comfortable pine double bed. The second bedroom has two single beds. So, whatever type of holiday you are looking for, The Smithy is the place to visit! We have 10 miles of varied and productive fishing on the rivers Bladnoch, Cree and Palnure Burn. Much of this fishing is excellent open flywater with well maintained banks and little need to wade. The Bladnoch is unique amongst the Solway Rivers in producing a Spring run of Salmon.

This is followed by Summer grilse from June on the first spates, with a good build up of fish towards Autumn. The brown trout fishing on the Bladnoch can produce excellent sport particularly on the dry fly. Salmon fishing on the Cree and Palnure can be very rewarding from late Spring onwards (Fishing is available at additional cost please advise at time of booking 2 rods free in the spring with full price house bookings. From £110 per rod per week low season to - £140 per rod per week peak season payable direct to owner)

Also available are: The Coach House and The Lodge.

    The Smithy reviews
Postcode (DG8 0DA)takes you to a farm about a mile or so away. Some of the advertised facilities are not available :- THERE IS NO WIFI. NEVER HAS BEEN ANY. SHOWER OVER THE BATH IS COLD WATER ONLY. NEEDS A PUMP TO BE FITTED TO CORRECT THIS. Mr Haley tells me that you have been told about this a few times. And apologised for you not correcting the advert. On the plus side of errors, the TV is in the lounge. One of the leather chairs bit chewed/scratched on the arm, no doubt from pets that have been there. Have been draped over with a blanket. Really is okay as fisherman's/hunting/ shooting cottage.
Owners Response: "RESPONSE FROM COTTAGES & CASTLES Thank you for your review. Firstly the post code covers a large area in Scotland in more remote parts so albeit it is correct the travel directions we send you are the best way to find your way. The entry of Wi-fi was not correct in our brochure - it was taken off our website as soon as the mistake was found - sorry. The shower is a mixer shower which does become warm once run and the TV was taken out of the bedroom and placed in the lounge area - again we have now amended this. The Smithy does accept dogs so the owners have decided to put a furniture throw over the chair. Thank you for your review and helping us keep things up to date."

Just a short stroll over a field and you are by the river Bladnoch. Superb outlook, plenty of car parking and an excellent helpful and knowledgable owner. This is a very popular cottage and folk have obviously been returning to it for years. The Cottage itself is kept very clean and comfortable with a well equipped kitchen. It is certainly very warm and cosy and has everything needed. The book town of Wigtown is worth a visit, go up to the top floor of the Library for outstanding views across the bay. All the pubs we visited were friendly and full of local characters. Best value for money was the Craighlaw Arms Kirkcowan ....No nonsense Pub grub from £6.00
    Mr Thompson - February 2014
Smithy cottage is situated a few metres from the river Bladnoch. You can hear the river flowing by from the cottage and stand at the door and imbibe the peace. The cottage is well equiped and lovely. The proprietor was very friendly and helpful, he marked on the Dumfries and galloway map places that he thought may interest us. We had a fab holiday.
