Set within stunning countryside in the heart of The Glenkens and the Galloway Hills, Bartaggart Farm offers two self catering holiday cottages as part of the recent steading conversion, which has been carried out sympathetically to blend into the surroundings.

This is the perfect location for an outdoor holiday with super walks, bridal paths and is also in close proximity to Loch Ken where there is a hive of activity. You can have a go at all types of water sports, archery, quad biking and much more. The 7 Stanes world class mountain bike trails are within driving distance at Glentrool, Kirroughtree, Ae, Dalbeattie and Mabie - Scotland’s Biking heaven. But this remote setting is also ideal for a peaceful holiday to get away from the hustle and bustle of ever day life. Enjoy some of the darkest skies in Europe and try a bit of star gazing. Wildlife enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice from The Red Kite Trail and Red Deer Range to Osprey viewing at Wigtown (Scotland’s Book Town) and Ken-Dee marshes nature reserve. Nearby New Galloway offers shops, restaurants and The Catstrand, a contemporary arts and visitor centre which features a year round programme of theatre, music, comedy, storytelling, workshops, exhibitions and film.

This cosy white holiday cottage in Dumfries and Galloway has been recently converted and is adjacent to the Farmhouse. The self catering property sleeps two guests in the double room at the rear of the cottage and two more on the sofa bed in the spacious lounge. The kitchen is very well equipped with electric oven and hob and a large fridge/freezer. The spacious lounge has dining for four and French doors open onto a paved area forming part of the garden. There is also a lawned area and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

Also available The Nook sleeps 2 (+2).

A ramp to the front door then takes you into the entrance hall. There is a large cupboard which houses the washing machine and boiler. Ahead is the compact kitchen with microwave, electric oven and hob. The double bedroom with wardrobe and chest of drawers situated at the rear of the cottage. The shower room is next to the bedroom. A spacious lounge with double sofa bed, dining area and French doors to the garden.

    The Smithy reviews
Lovely cottage. Well equipped with a lovely enclosed garden for the dog. Exceptionally clean The cottage is a bit remote but if you don’t mind driving lots of lovely places to visit. About 3 and a half miles to the nearest small village with a small shop. It’s very well stocked. Sue left us some welcome groceries which was lovely. The roads near the cottage are in quite poor condition so watch out for potholes especially if it’s raining as some are quite deep. But honestly a lovely place for a nice relaxing week

The cottage was lovely and there was fresh milk and bread etc which was a nice touch as we had dogs with us it was great having a walled garden would definitely recommend it.

Lovely little cottage. Great surroundings and excellent wildlife
    Mr Reay - July 2017
The Smithy is spacious and beautifully presented. It lies in a remote rural area, which suited us perfectly, but it is still easy to access lots of interesting places. We particularly liked Gatehouse of Fleet and Kirkcudbright. The only slight drawback is that the property is advertised as having wifi but it is not good enough if internet connection is essential for you and there is only one spot - on a garden bench by the front door - where it is possible to pick up a signal. The owners are friendly and helpful but not intrusive.

Excellent location , clean , dog friendly , home from home
    Mr Whitehouse - April 2016
We loved the cottage, loved the area, and enjoyed meeting Sue. The cottage is comfortable, well-designed, well-appointed, private, peaceful, and centrally placed in this beautiful district. We liked the quiet roads, the scenery, the friendly people in the little towns, and the sense of remoteness. When you look on the map, the huge building next to the farm is nothing to worry about. It is for Sue's horses. We made friends with a nice horse called Donna, in a field by the Hidden Road. (We had some trouble with internet access and could not always get mobile service.)
    Mr Foxcroft - August 2015
We had a lovely holiday in this area. The Smithy was a perfect place to stay. It was clean, comfortable and very well equipped. Where it was situated was wonderful. In the middle of nowhere. The nearest place was several miles away and this made for the perfect retreat. Loved it all
    Mr Russell - June 2015
Lots to see and do. Don't miss the red kytes in Galloway Forest. Awesome!. The Grapes pub is very friendly, good food at good prices. Also The smithy tearoom at new Galloway is lovely , real home baking in a lovely setting. Also visit the aviation museum - great place! The cottage owner is really nice and the cottage is comfy , roomy and great value. So peaceful .
    Mr Robertson - August 2013
enjoyed the comfort of this beautiful cottage and the hospitality and the thoughtful attention of the owners. My daughter and family were camping at Loch Ken so I spent a lot of time with them but it was nice to return to the cottage and relax in peace and quiet, and to admire the wildlife. I would really recommend this property
