Description

You know you have started your holiday when you arrive at Carrick shore. Tucked away on the beautiful Galloway Coast, a delightful self catering chalet with all the comforts for relaxed and easy living. Set in its own grounds, this holiday home is part of a group of beach houses and has magnificent views from the public rooms. The French doors make the most of those wonderful views as well as allowing the light to come flooding in. From the lounge you step out onto the large decked veranda which offers a special space for enjoying the local wildlife, views of the bay and outdoor dining. Also, when night falls you can enjoy very dark skies as it was confirmed last year by the International Dark Sky Association that Galloway is one of the best places for star gazing in the world!

Three steps take you up to the entrance of The Vital Spark and the accommodation on one level has two comfortable and cosy bedrooms. The master has an en-suite bathroom as well as a large picture window to enjoy the scenery. The second bedroom is a twin room, also with window to the rear of the property and has a bathroom next to it. The kitchen/lounge/dining area, tastefully furnished, is open plan making a good social space.

This unique rural setting with its sandy beach allows you to swim, sail, windsurf or canoe all only 100 metres from your holiday home. Close by is the Cream o' Galloway Visitors centre which is not only well known for its award winning ice-cream but where you can have an action packed day. Gatehouse of Fleet is a short drive away and offers shops, restaurants and pubs.

This is an area of unspoilt natural beauty and has some of the best scenery found in Scotland and there is so much to do and see for what ever type of holiday you are looking for. This is truly a haven of peace and tranquillity.

    The Vital Spark reviews
A lovely cabin with everything you need for a lovely relaxing week. The owner certainly has thought about everything, boxes of games, dvds and lovely decking area. Plenty of wildlife to see, red kites, woodpecker and lots more We would definitely return
Mr And Mrs Walker - November 2018
Stayed at the vial spark for the 6th time and have booked for next year. Its our favourite place. The vital spark has gorgeous views and is warm and comfortable and is situated wthin easy reach for walks and seeing wildlife.
    Mr Jones - September 2018
Idyllic week in idyllic setting, couldn’t fault it.
    Mr Wood - June 2018
We know and love the area so we knew we would have a blissful, scenic, peaceful week. What was a lovely surprise was how well equipped and welcoming the cabin was. Sandra the owner has thought of everything to make sure a comfortable stay. What we really enjoyed was the affordable price, the absence of do's and don'ts notices, the thoughtfulness, comfort and the stunning views. Hope to return.
Mr And Mrs Gilbert - March 2018
Cosy, Very good use of space, shower room exceptional. Well equiped kitchen. Will be coming back.Needs upto date photos on website, lot changes to furniture-- all good. Requires some maintenance to decking but we went in January- not a lot of need to sit outside.Track to lodge would not suit cars with low clearances.
    Mr Coleman - January 2018
My daughter came down from Inverness and we had week in Vital Spark everything exactly what we wanted for New Year break.
    Mrs Mcmillan - December 2017
The lodge was lovely, well equipped and very comfortable. It was in a good position with good views of the sea. Our 25 year old son had a great time exploring with the dog. However the access was appalling, a bumpy track was the understatement of the year, it was almost impassable at times and there was no way you could drive it in the dark. Your directions were a bit vague and we took ages to find it. However once we got there it was well worth it.
Mr And Mrs Collins - September 2017
What an excellent property in a stunning location. Well equipped with and with lovely touches such as a welcome tea tray. The location is perfect straight into the beach, with several wonderful walks near by and the most stunning night sky's to look at. The pictures online do not do this property justice as it has since had a refurb and fabulous inside. The whole process of booking and checking in was hassle free. We booked this property one day in advance as our usual holiday spot had cancelled last minute due to a fire and we are so pleased to have found our new favourite spot!!
    Mrs O'mahony - February 2017
This was our second visit to the Vital Spark and it was even nicer than we remember the first time. The Vital Spark is in a great position, overlooking the bay with some really nice walks and lots of wildlife and not far from the main A75 allowing access to Kircudbright, Castle Douglas etc. We will definitely return.
    Mr O'neill - February 2017
Only complaint would be not a big enough bed but we are spoiled at home with a super king. Otherwise absolutely great. Really felt like a home from home. Really well equipped. Mrs Wallace was attentive and helpful. Road in described as bumpy but not really that bad. .
    Mr Rowell - February 2017
Very comfortable, warm and welcoming. So nice to be so near to the beach.
    Mr Frost - October 2016
The chalet was clean and well appointed and we were welcomed with a courtesy tray which was a nice touch. It was a delight to sit on the deck watching the local wildlife with the only noise being birdsong. The short walk to the shore and the many walks on the doorstep, were greatly appreciated by two people who just wanted to chill out. The beer brewed in Castle Douglas is very, very good and it is worth visiting the brewery which is under an archway at the bottom of the main street. The Masonic Arms in Gatehouse of Fleet ( found on the side street behind the less interesting Murray Arms) serves excellent food and has a very pleasant beer garden. We would certainly return to recharge the batteries.
    Mrs Hunter - September 2016
The owner has created a personal atmosphere: we had got a friendly welcome with tea end shortbread, we have eaten from tasteful tableware and enjoyed all the nice little things around us - collected with love.
    Mrs Redenz - April 2016
Absolutely loved staying at the Vital Spark, the lodge was the perfect getaway and so cosy. Great views too and fully equipped kitchen made the stay even better. Will definitely stay for longer next time.
    Miss Mason - March 2016
Nice chalet, clean, beautiful and full equipped for a holiday time. Linen, beds and furniture in perfect conditions, cosy and comfortable. Full of details like soap, sugar or cooking oil, thing that you could easily forget to bring (Shops are a far from there). Well provided library for a lazy evening under the sun. But the best thing is the area, amazing views, sunsets and full of peace and natural beauty. I wish I could had stayed for a longer time. Will repeat for sure.
Miss Mendez Renedo - March 2016
A great place to get away - particularly if you want to enjoy the local wildlife - we saw Kestrels, Buzzards, Red Kites, lots of rabbits and a deer! The views are fantastic and despite how cold it was outside (Mid Feb) the electric heaters did a great job of keeping us warm. The décor is basic but very comfortable. Not far from the main A75 so this is a good base to explore. Beware the entrance road though - it is narrow and VERY bumpy. We'll definitely return.
    Mr O\'neill - February 2016
Lovely property, great location couldn't fault it apart from it meeds a new cooker!! the lower oven did not work and the top oven door does not close properly so there is no seal, made cooking difficult but apart from this everything was perfect.
Owners Response: "Thank-you very much for the review of your stay at my holiday home . I was sorry to hear that the cooker was playing up as I would have been down to sort it out, as on one or two occasions, it has been the cooker settings that need to be altered for the second oven to work. The instructions are left in the drawer for that purpose. I do appreciate problems being brought to my attention as it can be annoying not only for you but for the rest of my guests and I always phone at some point in the week to make sure everything is running smoothly! However , I hope this did not spoil your stay in Galloway and that you will come back to visit here again."
    Ms Wood - September 2015
The best sea view very beautiful beach comfortable cabin
    Mrs Burke - September 2015
We love this area and have had holidays there before. The surrounding countryside and beaches make it a fabulous place. We take our boat, wetsuits, bikes, walking boots etc and that's us set for the week. We particularly like to visit Kirkcudbright but other than that tend not to venture else where. Once the car is parked up it stays parked up! We have stayed in The Vital Spark before and felt is was getting tired but chose to return again this year. The blinds were new but other than that it was all the same. As the week progressed we notice a layer of thick dust covering things which hadn't been moved for a day or two. When the settee was adjusted a cloud of dust appeared. If we lay with our head on the settee we began to sneeze. All in all we had a fabulous time but fortunately the weather was good so we didn't need to spend much time in the cabin. Unless we knew the settee, carpets, soft furnishings had been replaced and the kitchen updated we will not return to The Vital Spark again but will definitely be back to Carrick Bay and neighbouring areas.
Owners Response: "Thanks for sending me this review………I was sorry to hear that you found the chalet tired but I am honest in saying that I try to keep the furnishings good but simple so that the damage from visitors is kept to a minimum, which is also reflected in the price you pay. This is my own holiday house which I let out when we don’t use it and my family love it as it is, a comfortable ,relaxing and family friendly space. I must admit that I can see your point about the settee as I had put on new throws which I always do when children and pets come, to keep it clean and pet hair free, but these throws seemed to cast off more fibres than any pet would! I must apologise about that and they have now been replaced. Unfortunately with the situation of the chalet ,being beside a dusty track and a sandy beach, although it is thoroughly cleaned on a Saturday, it can get dusty very quickly but that's the nature of a beach holiday ! I always phone to make sure everthing is satisfactory and to get in touch if there is a problem as I would hate a holiday spoiled if a simple thing like replacing throws can make all the difference."
    Mrs Perkins - July 2015
Excellent cabin everything you need and a view to die for.
    Mr Ancrum - June 2015
Loved our stay at the Vital Spark, just a welcome break which our young family thorougly enjoyed. Great views, and a wonderful location to explore the area. Well thought out and accommodating cottage with everything we needed and more. Will be looking to book again certainly. The owner was helpful and friendly phoning on our first day to see if there was anything we needed and made us feel welcome for our week.
    Mr Ferguson - October 2014
Well equipped house, with two lovely bathrooms. Ideal for four people. Very quiet location, with garden around each property and privacy. The house has a large deck at the front, facing the sun in the afternoon and with sea views - delightful to sit here and read or chat with a cuppa or G & T! Easy access down to the bay and coast and if you cycle and have bikes you can go further. However for anything else you need to get in your car (eg for milk, or any provisions ) and the road is a rough single track for a mile after the Tarmac road ends. No wifi and phone signal can be erratic. Good place to escape!
    Mrs Cousins - August 2014
This is a lovely cabin in a beautiful setting with everything needed for a relaxing holiday. The only problem we experienced was finding the cabin when we arrived as the instructions were completely inadequate. They did not give enough information about distances to be travelled after leaving the A75 and did not indicate that we should have proceeded down a no through road to reach the cabin. Once we found it we had a great holiday but finding it was very stressful, not helped by torrential rain.
Owners Response: "The Owner and Cottages & Castles apologise for any inconvenience caused and we are now reviewing and updating the travel details for the Vital Spark so no future customers experience the same problems."
    Mrs Sparks - July 2014
Superb stay, property very well equipped and VERY clean, we couldn't fault it in any way. My husband is disabled and owner was very accommodating - they came over on the first night to say if there was anything that she could help with we were just to call. Definitely 5 Stars!
    Mrs Smith - May 2014
This was one of our best holidays for years. The log cabin had every possible thing you could need and more. We had some difficulty finding it from the instructions given and in fact went right round the site before asking for help to locate it. We were very lucky with the weather and never needed a top coat once. The views were brilliant from the sitting room and we found lots to do and enjoyed visiting Laurieston for the feeding of the Red Kites at 2 p.m. Also the superb Gallery there where we were given a lovely welcome by Phil Mcmenemy along with home made biscuits and a cup of coffee. Must go again soon.
    Mrs Granger - April 2014
Lovely Chalet, very well kept & with a remarkable view of the cove at Carrick. My wife, myself & our cat had a great chillout long weekend break at the Vital Spark. It's so serene and relaxing, plus we got great weather for early April.
    Mr Farmer - March 2014
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Vital Spark. Excellent accommodation, everything you might need in the chalet, beautiful setting and views. We really enjoyed our walks with the dog along the sea shore and watching the sun set from the living room window. A real 'get away from it all' place. Will definitely return.
    Mrs Jones - November 2013
The Vital Spark is a wonderful lodge in a beautiful setting and all 4 of us want to return. It had absolutely everything you could want (including champagne flutes to celebrate a birthday while we were there!) It is cosy and warm, and the view from the sitting room is amazing. There is an abundance of wildlife, including a weasel which ran along the verandah one evening and 3 roe deer just a few feet from the kitchen window. The owner rang to check that everything was OK the evening we arrived. We couldn't have had a better holiday. We walked most days and my son in law swam in the sea most mornings (admittedly in a wetsuit). The area is beautiful and the weather was pretty kind - windy and cool but mostly dry.
    Mr Hodgson - April 2013
Excellent and very warm (despite the sub zero nights) - well appointed and a great place to explore from
    Mrs Wren - March 2013
An Ideal cottage for families with children with a lovely and safe beach on the doorstep in summer. My wife, daughter and I,not in the first flush, in mid sept. found it very cosy and comfortable and welcoming and an ideal location to visit the many gardens, including Threave, Cally, Kennedy and Logan Botanic. and the Galloway forest. Port patrick we found to be a beautiful spot.We had many meals out, our favourite being the Ship Inn in Gatehouse. We would be happy to return for another visit
    Mr Farquhar - September 2012
We had a lovely week and explored the beautiful Scottish villages and towns. We found a very lively Christian Church fellowship. The week went too quickly. The weather was very good indeed until the last day, when it didn't stop raining! but the scenery was fantastic. I thughy I'd submitted feedback previously!
    Mr Harris - June 2012
Lovely cosy, well equipped property in a really beautiful, peaceful setting
    Ms Dolan - March 2012
We were pleasantly surprised at how well equipped this chalet was. The kitchen had absolutely everything we neeed, and there were little extra touches that were very welcome (cooking oil in the cupboard - I always forget to buy that when away! Nets for rock pooling, bird feed for the bird table etc). A selection of reading material and board games helped during a wet 'summer' week. The phone call from the owner upon arrival was a lovely touch. We were made to feel very welcome, and there was a good opportunity to find out hints and tips for making the week a success. The accommodation itself was very clean and tidy and had all we wanted. It isn't the biggest, but there was ample space for lounging about, a dining table, good storage in the bedrooms, two toilets (very handy!), a bath and a shower - which was very warm, and most useful when coming off a cold beach. A brilliant feature was the outside utility room that had an electric heater, which we used a lot as a drying room for clothes, wetsuits etc. The location is close to the beach and several residents seemed to have boats, windsurf boards etc. We used an inflatable RIB which we could store safely and there were no problems launching etc. The tide does go a long way out, though, so we had to time it correctly. The tracks between chalets are unpaved and cars go slowly, so it was safe for our young children. There was space for them to run around and play, which they enjoyed. The chalets are not arranged in an order and are at different angles and levels, so they tend not to be overlooked and certainly are not crowded. The area is good - lots to do on the beach, the sand is good to play on, rock pools to explore, and at low tide you can walk to the nearest island. The view from the lounge window is great and constantly changing. Local attractions are very handy, and we really enjoyed the castles and the Cream of Galloway centre. I would happily recommend this accommodation to others - we had a good week and it was everything we expected and wanted. The only minor point that we would note for next time was that the chalet is a little hard to find amongst the others in the area - we had to work through each by name until we found it. Not difficult, though - a lovely remote location to explore!
    Mr Weights - August 2011
Wonderful well equiped chalet within a short stroll to the beach. Beautiful location and plenty to do in the area. Only improvement I could sugest was that the garden wasn't fenced in for dogs and children but this might be an estate rule rather than the owners decision. Great cottage once again from Cottages and Castles.
    Ms Jamieson - June 2011
Really well equipped, and very well prepared for our visit. Lovely views and very quiet. Was suitable for my elderly parents, and the dog loved it! Host was extremely welcoming.
    Mrs Dempsey - April 2011
What an amazing chalet. Absolutely beautiful interiors and comfortability is also great. Greeting phone call from owner was lovely welcome to the vital spark. A wealth of information regarding the local area was given to me from the owner which was particularly helpful. There was no need for me to have brought pots and pans and crockery as this was supplied which was another bonus. Then theres the view. The view has to be seen as words cannot justify what the eye can see. Loved the walk in shower cubicle and seperate bath tub. Heating was excellent. Hotwater was always provided. Very clean chalet on arrival (and when we left cos i cleaned it) All together an amazing chalet that we all thouroughly enjoyed. Thank you Cottages and Castles!! and to the Vital Spark.
    Mr Cross - April 2011
