Description

Beautiful Uiginish Lodge sits at the end of a single track road on the North West coast of Skye and beyond are long walks along the shoreline, cliff tops and beaches where there is nothing but the sound of birdsong and the sea. It is a truly spectacular location – just walk from the garden across the paddock and you are at the seashore and the views of Dunvegan Castle are wonderful. Eagles are regular visitors here and you have a good chance of seeing these magnificent creatures along with numerous other wildlife, including the famous Dunvegan seals, otters, deer and a multitude of birds.

This beautiful 18th Century house, the former dower house of Dunvegan Castle, has been sympathetically and stylishly refurbished to create a wonderfully spacious, light holiday house over three floors. You might spend the most time in the fantastic kitchen/dining/sitting room which stretches the full length of the house. The door to the garden brings the outside in, as do the many long windows – it is a lovely room. The large Aga at one end and the wood burning stove at the other make this cosy all year, and it joins directly to the snug, where you can curl up and read or watch TV. The open plan sitting room on the first floor has a wonderful view of the sea loch and Castle, while the top floor library provides a quiet retreat.

The bedrooms are equally bright and light and the 4 bedrooms at the front have delightful views down to the sea and across to Dunvegan Castle, and the rear rooms have views of the flat topped Tables of MacLeod. Throughout the house there is a sense of light and space with wooden floors, antique furniture and some fascinating modern art it is a house to enjoy and perfect for a family holiday.

Outside there is a fully enclosed lawned garden and easy access to the shoreline. You can launch or hire a boat across at Dunvegan jetty and Uiginish Lodge has its own boathouse. Have a swim - the water is clear and clean, if chilly! Try your hand at sea fishing or take a RIB boat trip to visit Eigg, Muck and Rhum for the day. Locally, if you tire of self catering, you are spoilt for choice with the famous Three Chimneys just two miles away and there is fantastic seafood available at the ancient Stein Inn or the Lochbay Seafood Restaurant (also in Stein, about 15-20 minutes drive).

This large holiday house is very special and the fulfilment of a dream for its owner. If you want to enjoy fabulous landscapes, breathtaking sea views, long walks, a shoreline location and, above all, a sense of relaxation and escape, then this is for you.

    Uiginish Lodge reviews
We had a wonderful ten days at Uiginish Lodge. The house was spacious, homely but not to large too comfortably house all our guests. All our party were really complimentary about the house and location. The only thing that possibly needs looking at is cloudy tumblers, broken kitchen implements that might be better discarded and table lamps having the odd lamp not working. None of these elements spoilt our holiday. We had a family ball in a great house set in a magical location in a wonderfully stunning part of Scotland. Would we return yes.

Inside the house is lovely. But the outside area and garden needs a lot of work. House is well kitted out and the location is amazing. The path to the house is in very bad condition and needs a 4wd to access easily. Overall a good property but overpriced considering the state of the outside and garden area.

Five stars because the lodge is beautifully refurbished and appointed with modern appliances. Very comfortable and spacious. We first entered (mistakenly) through the back door and had some doubts about what we would see. Upon entering the kitchen/dining/lounging space we knew we were in for a delightful experience. Whoever designed the refurbishing of this historic structure had an excellent eye for what pleases. Outdoors, there is limitless space to roam, thanks to the law that allows hiking everywhere in Scotland (people trying this in the USA could be welcomed with buckshot). We clambered over the first stile in our lives to reach the loch. Eight of us, including our two granddaughters always had plenty to do during our week at Uiginish Lodge. Only a few small hitches, which could easily be remedied. The Aga wasn't as hot as it needed to be. Two of the showers provided only cold water (there were also two that work fine, so no problem). One of the toilets has a broken handle. These problems fade into irrelevance next to how special the lodge is, in all.

Beautiful, welcoming house in a delightful location. Spacious, airy and tastefully furnished, and clean and well equipped throughout. Despite atrocious weather, the house made for a great holiday, and the children were never bored. Some really nice touches, like a well stocked library of DVDs and waterproofs for guests to borrow. And the woodburning stove made for cosy evenings. Only niggle was the sparse provision of basics - no soap in the bathrooms, hardly any kitchen roll or washing up liquid, only one spare bin bag etc. These were easily obtainable from the store in Dunvegan, but we'd have preferred not to have had to go out shopping after a 5 hour drive!
    Mr Merrill - July 2015
The property is sited in a excellent and quiet location. We really loved the loch side location with views of Dunvegan Castle to the front and the Macleods Tables to the rear. The large garden was great to play in for the children and the walk out to the point and to the shoreline was fantastic. The property itself is really well equipped and set out very well. The large rooms are just majestic! We really enjoyed cooking in the large and well furnished kitchen and with space to seat all 12 people round the big table. There was plenty of space for everyone to relax, whether it be in the piano room or in the various sitting areas around the house and they were plenty of those! Each area has its own sense of peace and quiet. The bedrooms were well furnished and really large, we had no problem with storage. The bathrooms were just amazing, off the scale in fact - hot water on tap all the time and plenty of space. We did not really use the games room as we were blessed with some great weather during our stay, however the excellent wireless connection saw plenty of use and was accessible in all areas of house. In terms of places to go I would recommend Neist Point (take care in the strong winds), Fairy Pools, Old Man of Storr or just walking out from the property. There is plenty to see and its so quiet - we even saw the Northern Lights! We did not eat out really as we cooked everything in the excellent kitchen, but for a little bite to eat or a coffee I would recommend Old Byre Skye Gallery & Cafe in Ose about 20 minutes drive away, excellent coffee and great food. All in all it was great holiday and definitely a place we will be returning too.
    Mr Marsh - September 2014
We had such a good week, in spite of the horizontal rain, that we want to return next year. We loved the house. Recommendations - a mirror in each bedroom, more coat-hangers in the wardrobes, and a drying rack in the utility room.
    Dr Dhillon - April 2013
The house was simply stunning with amazing views over loch to castle. Everything was immaculate and high quality. The kitchen is the focal point of the house, aga cooking one end , wood burning stove the other. Set out over 3 floors with huge bathrooms, check out the view from the roll top bath. Also plenty of space to put your boots and coats at the end of hard days walking. Only critic was the lack of storage in the bedrooms. The top floor had no chest of draws, only a wardrobe with no hangers so had to live out of a bag for a week. It didn t spoil our stay but might be worth noting, as it can be easily rectified.
    Mrs Slater - April 2012
Uiginish Lodge is an extremely comfortable house. The wonderful kitchen with views out to the sea is just glorious. The rooms are spacious, the beds extremely comfortable & the baths deep with plentiful hot water. Location wise, while it can seem like it takes forever to get there, once you are installed the scenery is beyond compare. There is a beach just below the house which is good for children to guddle around on although on a still day the midges can be a pain. There are plenty of walks striking out directly from the house, and lots of lovely beaches to go and visit. Most of these involve a walk of some description to get there but that is half the fun. There are 3 wonderful restaurants within striking distance, one of which (Loch Bay in Stein) provided us with the most memorable evening of amazing seafood and location. A feast for all the senses. Dunvegan Castle across the bay is fascinating & while the seal boat trip is expensive this is worth every penny. All in all a wonderful place to stay & a wonderful house to stay in. We would love to return one day. However I am meanly holding back one star due to the fact that there was nowhere to hang our coats & one pillow each on the beds seemed a bit mean, although I suspect these things will be sorted as time goes on, given that the house feels as though it has been very recently renovated. AS for the midges, they didn't trouble us in the slightest other than one very still day on the beach below the house. The table football & ping pong in the games room were a huge hit with the children & wi-fi was a great bonus. We also loved the fact that dogs were welcome. Thank you for a wonderful week.
    Mrs Robson - August 2011
Uiginish Lodge is a well worth a stay. Refurbishement of the house was carried out with great care an style. The big kitchen / living room is excellent. Altough being located at one corner of Skye it offers magnificient oportunities to explore the island. Nice private location. Just staying at the house and explore the surrounding is also worth while. If feasable we definitely book once more. Needs some more coat hooks and a drying rack.

Beautiful house, stunning location. Friendly owner and caretakers. A place where you can walk straight from the house out onto the headland to fish, or watch the seals. Sunset over the loch, with a view back to the Cuillin. Very comfortable rooms, space for outdoor gear, and a great dining area for the family. (We need a bit more practice with the Aga, but we never went hungry.) You can watch the sheep walk past as you play the piano in the open hall way, or lose yourself in a book from the library on the top floor. Easy access to food shopping in Dunvegan, good roads to the main towns on Skye, local art galleries, beaches, and Neist Point a few miles to the west where we saw whales, basking sharks, and sea eagles. A place you'll never want to leave.
