    Westruther Mains reviews
ideal sized house for families and also welcomes dogs. Kitchen/dining area is super for relaxing in. Spacious garden with play facilities for children. House itself could do with being upgraded especially the bathrooms. Disappointed that dishwasher was not working and were only informed day prior to our booking. Contacted booking agency re possibility of discount who forwarded our email to the owner who responded and gave a small discount for any inconvenience caused.

Perfect house, very comfortable, fabulous games hut and garden for the kids to play and explore. Good location in the Borders accessible to many attractions.

We (six adults, 4 children and a dog) visited Westruther Mains for joint 60th birthday celebration. When we first arrived we instantly fell in love with the kitchen and set about bedding ourselves in and cooking for that evening. The Aga was amazing to use and not too tricky to get the hang of - the information book left for guests was very well informed which helped. The kitchen itself was stocked with everything that you would have at home and nothing was lacking - including kids crockery. The rest of the house followed a similar theme - comfortable, cosy and homely with everything that you would want or need for a family get away. The playroom was incredibly well stocked with a range of toys - we had a 9 year old girl and 4.5, 1.5 and 1 year old boys with us and all of them were catered for. The beds were all very comfy with lovely feather duvets - for that added bit of luxury! And the bathrooms were spotless and looked brand new. The living room was wonderfully cosy, especially with the fire on latterly, and it really did feel homely - tidy and clean, but no-one worried about keeping it totally spotless while we were enjoying it...we just made ourselves at home! As with all old houses, there were some minor areas that might need a touch up or patch at the end of the season, but absolutely nothing of concern or that detracted from the overall feel of the place. The garden was an absolute joy and we spent hours sitting outside, playing table-tennis, hide and seek (perfect space for it!) and generally just having a wonderful time. Although the grounds are large, the kids were able to run free as they were safely enclosed. My wee one, in particular, loved the local cows and sheep and was constantly asking to go visit them again. We were only there for a long weekend and would certainly go back for longer. In fact, I think we all said that we wished we could just move in permanently!

We had a lovely weekend at Westruther Mains. With 5 adults and 5 children we need a house with lots of rooms and this fitted the bill. It was well equipped for children, lots of games inside and lots to do outside. The house has everything you need with good size bedrooms and comfortable beds. Thank you for the wine and chocolates, that was a nice touch The heavy snow fall was an added extra and the children thought we might be snowed in!! The one and only downside is the road up to the house which has lots of potholes and one of these potholes dislodged the exhaust heat shield from one of our cars
    Mrs Graham - February 2016
Westruther is a great place to take the family, however, some aspects are requiring attention. It has a 'tired' feel. The only shower room has serious flaked paint round the whole window and the tiling could at least be re-grouted to give a cleaner feel. Perhaps the ensuites could be upgraded to incorporate standing showers as we found that the entire party were waiting to use the only shower, which we felt was not adequate for the money it cost to stay there. There is a redundant extractor fan in one ensuite which makes a very loud banging noise when there is wind, this disrupted sleep on two nights of the stay. Those points aside, the location is lovely and the house has a cosy feel. The Thistle Inn was very welcoming and we had superb steaks there.
Owners Response: "Many thanks for your review and feedback. So pleased to hear you loved the property and location in the main and that all went well ! We always re decorate at the end of the year and appreciate the bathroom needs a recoat and regrout which will be done shortly. The extractor fan will also be fixed before next guests arrive – we hadn’t appreciated this was making a noise when windy. You’ll be pleased to hear we are also doing some major works in the garden with a timber deck to be installed for outdoor eating and a general spruce up of the outdoor games room and enclosed orchard. Hopefully you will return next year to see some of the improvements !"

Lovely old house. Felt right at home as soon as we arrived and the bottle of wine and chocolates were a lovely touch. Children loved it - lots for them to do. Lovely area.
    Mrs Downey - May 2015
House was lovely, warm and comfortable. Plenty of hot water and a large garden for the dogs and children to play in. Having not used an Aga before we could have done with a few instructions on how long things take to cook and which oven to use (ie. roast chicken). It was a bit hit and miss but we got used to it by the end of the week.
    Mrs Cunningham - February 2014
This was everything we as a family could have hoped for. It was like walking into your own home - everything, especially in the kitchen, was immediately to hand. The huge kitchen/diner and open fireplace were the best features. Many interesting books on the shelves and plenty of places to hide away to read them too. Great opportunity for walks and fun the garden with children. We'll definitely return.
