Description

Set in glorious Perthshire countryside on a 1,000 acre estate between Glenshee and Glenisla, the Whitehouse is first and foremost a wonderful family house with a great feel, and provides an ideal venue for relaxed self-catering holidays for family and friends in beautiful Scotland. As a mansion house dating from the 18th century, Whitehouse combines charm and character with more recently added comforts for modern living including a large kitchen/dining room at the heart of the house. This holiday house in Perthshire is spacious and light, and both house and garden have beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

Whitehouse is easily accessible despite its rural location. Blairgowrie is only 20 minutes away, and Pitlochry with all its many attractions is 35 minutes drive across the beautiful Moulin moor. Heading further north, Braemar is an hours' drive through the dramatic mountains of Glenshee and the Grampians.

Closer to home, walkers will enjoy the access to the hills, moorland and hill lochs, and there are many activities more locally too, in neighbouring Glenisla and in Glenshee, with rock climbing and canoeing centre's nearby. Small children are well catered for with woods to explore, a swing and playhouse in the private garden. The Borland and Whitehouse estate on which Whitehouse is situated includes a hill farm with rare breeds such as highland cattle, belted Galloways and Hebridean sheep. Wildlife such as deer and red squirrels can also be seen, sometimes in the garden.

Next door is The Old Laundry a delightful little cottage perfect for getting away from it all and enjoying the beautiful Perthshire countryside. Recently refurbished, the cottage is bright and fresh, with comfortable and stylish furnishings and décor. The sitting room with its wood burning stove is perfect for relaxing, and has two single chair beds allowing the cottage to accommodate up to four guests. The bedroom is spacious and welcoming, and together with a small but well equipped kitchen with dining table, provides the perfect holiday accommodation for couples and smaller families. This means in all 14 people can be accommodated very comfortably at Whitehouse.

    Whitehouse reviews
I stayed at Whitehouse with eight other friends, and a dog, to celebrate my 30th birthday and would recommend it to any other large groups looking for somewhere to stay in this part of Scotland. It's location is absolutely stunning as it stands on a valley side overlooking the scenery of Blacklunans. The house has a large secluded garden which is an extremely enjoyable place to spend time if the weather is suitable. The garden is also ideal if you are taking dogs as they have a large area to roam free without disturbing any local wildlife. The house itself is luxurious and has plenty of room for everyone. On the ground floor, the kitchen and dining area is ideal for preparing meals for large groups and a great place to sit enjoy food and drink. The living room and sitting room are decorated beautifully and provide comfort and space for everyone. Everyone who I stayed with said that their bed was extremely comfortable and the rooms are also spacious. There are also plenty of bathrooms to get going quickly in the morning as there are no need for queues to get washed and ready. Everything we needed was provided for us and there is a large Tesco in Blairgowrie (around 15-20 minutes away) for shopping. For somewhere to relax with surrounding natural beauty Whitehouse delivers and is a gorgeous property. There are also plenty of excellent locations within driving distance to enjoy while you stay there. We couldn't have asked for anymore and I would recommend it to any large groups of friends or family (of any age).
    Mr Gladstone - July 2018
Wow wow wow!!!! I could go on and on so I'll try and keep it short..... We were a family group, this was a Christmas gift to my parents and my sister, her husband and 3 kids to join myself husband and 2 children on the last bank holiday weekend in May........ Check in was easy and in arrival house was welcoming from the outside, beautiful country road up to the Whitehouse sets the scene that awaited us, gorgeous house with absolutely stunning grounds! Huge grass area for the kids to play they particularly enjoyed playing garden snakes and ladders along with lots of other games also enjoyed the tree swing in the garden. We felt safe knowing the kids were just outside in the garden but they felt like they had lots of freedom with it being a fabulous size and so much to explore!! On entering the house there is a massive porch area, plenty space for you all to get in and remove your shoes etc. The hallway it's just beautiful and so elegantly decorated, there is a snug room with a fire and plenty of comfy seats and a sofa, to be honest we never used this room at all. The kitchen was my most favourite room of the house, we spent most of our long weekend in this room all of us round the large oval table with plenty of space, we laughed joked played games and generally made wonderful memories around this table from morning till night!! The kitchen has everything you would have at home from cutlery to plates to serving dishes pots n pans oven trays I could seriously go on and on...... there is nothing you would need that's not in the cupboards or drawers!! We took down all our cleaning products and dishwasher tablets but if required these were all in the cupboards. Even kitchen foil in the drawers...... The living room was in style with the home very warm and welcoming and a room of real character there is a log fire that we did light on the Saturday night - only because we felt it had to be done even if only to show the kids what it was...... again this was a room we didn't use much only due to the fact the kitchen was so spacious and we just loved it! Living room has plenty of family games etc to keep everyone entertained....../ There is a fabulous sized utility/laundry room that has plenty space for laundry to be washed and dried on the pully! We took down our soap powder etc but again there was some in the cupboards had you forgot any! Downstairs toilet again a good size! The bedrooms each one was more lovely than the next, we gave the ensuite to my parents and they loved it! Girls in one room with the spare bed that was provided, and my sister in the other double room! Again there is a bathroom good sized on this floor plenty of towels to be used and lots of spare bedding should it have been required! We had the room on the top level the view was just amazing loved waking up in the morning and watching the red squirrels play in the garden! The beds were all so comfy and no expense spared on the John Lewis feather duvets and pillows on each bed, it was sleeping in a 5 star hotel room! The boys shared the room next to us and we were pleased to see the window was a safety window and would only open a little, giving us great peace of mind for boys who are intrigued with everything! There is nothing to do locally and anything further a field requires a car to venture to but that's exactly what we wanted, we wanted the kids to have no phones and iPads and get back to basics we wanted long walks lazy mornings fun lunches and meals. Everything I could of planned was in the house and lots more! My niece asked me if she could have this as her Christmas present again this year.... not bad for a 13 year old who's constantly on her phone and other social media devices! Overall we had an absolutely fantastic weekend and would thoroughly recommend the Whitehouse to anyone! We are already trying to sort out a date for our next visit...... Thank you to the Howman family for letting out this beautiful house that is so much more and you can tell it's a home that so much thought and effort has went into! Sadly we did have a small mishap and the owners could not have been any nicer so professional and approachable! #WhitehouseRocks
Mr And Mrs Friery - May 2017
Loved the house ,garden, situation. Full of many historical and fascinating pictures which enhanced the experience. Loved cooking on the aga - took me back to my childhood. Could not believe we were watching red squirrels in the garden at such close proximity. It even snowed to enhance the beauty of the area. We did find it difficult to heat the lovely sitting room in the evenings even though we lit the fire. I think this was due to wind direction - it was at the time of storm Doris - and lack of double glazing. The cosy kitchen may up for that.
    Mrs Heissg - February 2017
The Whitehouse was just fantastic. We booked for my fathers 70th birthday so we could get all the family together. The rooms on the first floor were beautiful and the attic rooms, a little simpler, great for the children. The place was spotless and lovely and cosy on our arrival and throughout even though it was really cold outside. The huge kitchen and aga were beautiful and well equipped.
    Miss Penny - November 2016
There were 11 of us on a long weekend break at this lovely house. 7 adults and 4 kids. We all had a fantastic time. Perfect !
    Mr Gallagher - September 2016
The kitchen was fantastic: Spacious, well-equipped and a place that everyone wanted to hang-out in :-) We also enjoyed the view from the house and the squirrel in the garden. The cleaning was fine too. Only problem was the water pressure in the shower on the top-floor (it was almost non-existing). Guests need to have a car to reach the house - there are no great walks/sights/shops nearby - you need to drive for some miles to reach everything.
    Mrs Krogsdal - July 2016
House was excellent and had everything we needed and lots of firewood to keep the fires burning over new year. Excellent place to stay for a few days with a big group. Also thanks to the owner who communicated directly with us about possible access issues due to the flooding and heavy rainfall in the area, and left the christmas tree up, this was unexpected and much appreciated by all.
    Mr Yendell - December 2015
A very large house, well equipped and child friendly with stair gates, cot and high chair. Garden excellent and surrounding farmland good for walks straight from the house. Large Tesco in Blairgowrie and amazing fish and chips at Alyth.
    Mr Mcgorrigan - June 2015
House was very well furnished and kitchen in particular had everything you could need for fine dining. Heating was on for our arrival which was great as I expected a large country house to be cold but it was cosy. Plenty of wood for the open fire. Very clean. Carpeting upstairs looked new. Real winner for us was the large kitchen and dining area complete with aga. Weather not suitable for sitting outside unfortunately but good sized garden. Directions -Missed the turn off initially so would suggest improved signage at the foot of the road. There is a sign for the ecocamp which is accessed via the same road, so directions could mention to look out for this.
    Mrs Cockburn - May 2015
The Whitehouse was a delightful property in a serene part of Perthshire. The house was immaculate when we arrived and we enjoyed a great stay over the course of a long weekend. I booked the property for a holiday with friends who were fellow walkers and it was particularly useful that the adjoining old laundry was also available for the trip. There are plenty of good hills / walks in the surrounding area and the facilities provided excellent comfort and rest after a day on the hills. The housekeeping staff were friendly, attentive and obtrusive. I would recommend the Whitehouse for a small party looking for a nice break in great countryside with plenty of activities available in the surrounding area.
    Mr Gillott - May 2015
This was a perfect place to use as a base to explore the Cairngorms. Spacious, well appointed with bags of character, we absolutely loved the place and would not only recommend to anyone, but would definitely use again.
    Mr Tilley - April 2015
We had a fabulous week in this extremely comfortable family home. Ideally sized for our party with a spacious kithen/ dining area complete with aga and a cosy living room and the separate snug was ideal for grandparents to get a bit of peace from the grandchildren. The bedrooms are all generously sized and the en suite complete with roll top bath off the master bedroom felt particularly luxurious. The house is ideally situated for skiing in Glenshee and for exploring Deeside. The Reekie Linn falls nearby are both surprising and stunning and there's a great pottery a mile or so up the road from the house.
    Mrs Gray - February 2015
A lovely house tucked away in the glens. A very comfortable house with lovely bedrooms, lounge and kitchen. Highly recommend this property to family groups. Lots to do in the local area and the views are stunning.
    Ms Barnett - September 2013
We all throughly enjoyed our stay at the Whitehouse. We were lucky enough to be surround by lots of snow which gave us the oportunity to go to the Ski centre and hit the slopes. Th gerden was perect for letter the dogs run around as well as spotting red squrriels from the kitchen window. It was the perfect venue for our large group of friends to relax and catch up over many meals around the lovely large dinning table thanks to the well equppied kitchen. We loved our stay and would all happily return.
    Mrs Higgins - February 2013
The house was great and just what we needed. Clean, warm and in a beautiful part of the country. Kitchen and sitting room worked really well and with 5 good bedrooms upstairs. Everything worked and well maintained. Would have no hesitation in recommending this house for a stay. Lands of Loyal hotel nearish and good for a great hotel meal.
    Mr Mcewan - October 2012
We couldn't rate the Whitehouse enough. We were a party of 10 plus children and the house offered us the perfect getaway - both in terms of comfort and layout. The house was also very warm - sometimes not a feature of large old houses! The layout of the house meant it was easy to keep track of the little ones. We'll certainly be back next year!
    Mr Reid - October 2012
Two fathers and five kids ranging from ten to six years old had a week long holiday in the Whitehouse. The accomodation was perfect. Kitchen big with a very big table for our breakfasts and dinners. ACE kitchen, also, really useful. Living room with a warm fireplace and optimal landscapes from the bay window. Upper floors could fit us and more, bathrooms enough for any need. Not a broken glass!
    Mr Tracanella - June 2012
Lovely house with plenty of space for the size of our party. On arrival it was very cold and damp and had no dry logs to use on the fires. The sitting/drawing room sofas are dirty and very old. However all beds were comfortable and sofas in the snug were fine. I would reccomend this property but the drawing room furniture does let it down.
Owners Response: "Thanks for comment - Our log man was taken ill, and we always provide plenty of dry logs, so sorry about this.  Contact numbers and instructions are provided on where logs are kept.  We modernised the whole house a few years ago, bar 2 of the 3 sofas in the main sitting room as our children loved making them into camps and dens, and jumping on them!  These are being replaced this season.  It’s hard to strike a balance between fun and formality in this great family house - so thanks for pointing this out.  We do appreciate that outside temperatures were extremely cold recently, and we have had comment recently that the house was too hot.  The house has a large modern boiler, recently upgraded and we never mind people hitting the boost switch in January/February or any time - we might be Scots but we have spent too long in the soft south to get cold ourselves!"
    Mrs Hopkins - February 2012
