The kitchen is contemporary and bright with stylish oak units, modern appliances and a wall of windows offering chefs breathtaking rural views. Once prepared, head into the stunning open-plan lounge/diner which boasts fires at either end. Having dined on the quirky timber table, hunker down in the lounge area for an evening of board games or films with the family while you plan the day ahead.

Known for its country pursuits, this area offers plenty of opportunities for fishing and stalking too. Those who enjoy a tipple should make for one of the many distilleries in the area, which include Balmenach Gin Distillery and Tomatin Whisky Distillery.

For an adrenaline rush, spend a day at Landmark Forest Adventure Park (11 miles) with its dinosaur kingdom, wild water coaster and butterfly house making for a perfect family day out. Or jump aboard the Strathspey Railway (13 miles) to admire the beautiful scenery of the Cairngorms National Park from the comfort of your carriage on this traditional steam train. For a meal out, head into nearby Tomintoul (14 miles), home to three restaurants, or pop into Nethy Bridge (2 miles) to stock up on supplies at the farm shop.

A great cottage in a lovely location. Original design, some good pieces of antique furniture. Beds are firm, shower is large enough to turn around in. Nice light kitchen. However, you can't get a view of the North Cairngorms mountains from the cottage itself; you have to go up to the back of the garden. And the amount of wood inside means that it iRead mores quite dark. We had to put the lights on all the time and it was too dark to read a book. BBC iPlayer was available but kept seizing up. Hide
