Tomintoul is an attractive, stone-built village and is the highest village in the Highlands. You’ll find a good selection of independent shops and eateries, including cosy pubs where you can listen to traditional Scottish music whilst you sip your drink. The village hosts several events throughout the year and, if you’re visiting in July, you might be lucky enough to catch the Highland Games – a fun-filled day of Scottish festivities.

Tomintoul is part of the vast Glenlivet Estate, which is a hub of outdoor activity. In the surrounding countryside you can try everything from mountain biking to gorge walking. If you’re here in winter, you can even take to the slopes at the Lecht Ski Centre (8 miles).

Those wishing to sample a wee dram during their stay can take a tasting tour of Tomintoul Distillery (7 miles), where traditional methods are used to produce the Speyside, single malt whisky. You’ll also be close to several of the distilleries on the world-famous Malt Whisky Trail, including Glenlivet Distillery (10.5 miles).

Nearby attractions include Balmoral Castle, the Scottish home of the Royal family, which is 24 miles away. During autumn and winter months the beautiful grounds are open to the public. Another popular day out is aboard the Strathspey Steam Railway, which chugs its way through the scenic Cairngorms countryside between Aviemore and Broomhill.
