Wonderful rustic country cottage with fully enclosed gardens and a wood burner, perfect for a digital detox. Located in a beautiful area with splendid sea and countryside views.

The traditional cottage enjoys an idyllic location on The Machars Peninsula, boasting exquisite sea and countryside views. The peninsula is a paradise for history enthusiasts, with Bronze and Iron Age sites dotted throughout the area, and the walking opportunities are endless. The cottage sleeps five guests and two dogs, making it ideal for a relaxing family holiday. Spend time unwinding in the beautiful gardens, before heading inside to sip a wee dram by the wood burner.

The detached, single-storey property is bursting with character. With exposed stonework and traditional country-cottage decor, the holiday home has a lovely rustic charm throughout. The property is light and airy and the large picture windows make the most of the fabulous scenery, with many of the rooms benefitting from far-reaching rural views.

Kick off your walking boots in the hallway and head into the cosy lounge. Fire up the wood burner and sink into the plump sofa to watch TV, listen to music on the Bluetooth speaker or read a book. The country-style kitchen is a joy to cook in, with beautiful views and everything you need to rustle up a tasty meal. Come together for mealtimes in the formal dining room where, again, there are stunning views. When it’s time to say goodnight, choose from a charming double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, or the delightful double which houses an additional single bed. Completing the holiday cottage is a handy shower room.

French doors lead from the lounge onto the large, decked area to the front of the property. This is the perfect spot to take in your fabulous surroundings; fire up the BBQ for evenings of great food under the stars. To the rear, there’s a pretty, mature garden where children and dogs can play (just be sure to supervise them near the pond). There is off-road parking for three cars.

The Machars Peninsula is rich in history and you won’t have to journey far to really get a feel for the sense of community in the region. Enjoy day trips to nearby friendly villages, with picturesque harbours and long, sandy beaches, or stride out on foot to explore the clifftop paths and forest trails. However, you choose to spend your days, you’re sure to leave feeling fully relaxed and refreshed.

Journey into the Isle of Whithorn (2.5 miles) to wander around its historic harbour and admire the beautiful Georgian architecture. From here, enjoy coastal walks in all directions. On the headland, visit the ruins of St Ninian’s Chapel, and from the town you can walk to St Ninian’s Cave, which is said to be a hideaway of an early Christian saint. Another popular walk takes you along the coast to Burrow Head, which featured in the film The Wicker Man.

Wigtown (14 miles) is known as Scotland’s book town, thanks to its 20+ bookshops. Spend a lazy afternoon pottering amongst the tomes, followed by a delicious homemade cake in one of the quirky cafes. The town also hosts a fabulous book festival each May.

There are some fantastic beaches within easy reach, including Monrieth (8 miles). This long, sandy beach is just 8 miles away and has many rock pools for little ones to investigate. From here, there’s a lovely walk that takes you to the historic Barsalloch Fort.

Lovely setting with good views from decking which were better than expected as description doesn't do them justice. Walk to coastal path was short and easy and not sufficiently promoted. Cosy cottage with plenty of space and nice stove. A great place to get away from it all. However, it does need some redecoration and a good clean.

A fabulous cottage to get away from it all. The wildlife is wonderful, seeing hares, rabbits and deer from the bedroom window! We will definitely be booking again.

Lovely cozy well equipped cottage in a peaceful location. Lots of windows framing countryside and coastal views. Lack of phone signal and wifi helped a digital detox. Open countryside on the doorstep leading to the coastal path.

Love the location, total peace and quiet. The garden is great for being outside at anytime and weather permitting and a small moon allows great views of the night sky. I would note that access needs to be taken carefully as the track is not a road. Hide
