The Glenfinnan Viaduct is best known for its iconic appearance in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where it features during the dramatic scene of the Hogwarts Express crossing the bridge through the misty Scottish Highlands. As Ron and Harry fly Mr Weasley’s enchanted car to school, they soar alongside the train, swerving around its steam and nearly colliding with it before crash landing into the Whomping Willow. Where is the Harry Potter train in Scotland?

The Harry Potter train can be boarded at Glenfinnan Station close to Fort William, Scotland. It runs along the West Highland line ending in Mallaig. It is called the Jacobite Steam Train and has become one of the most famous lines in the world.


How to ride the Harry Potter train in Scotland?

To ride the Harry Potter train, officially known as the Jacobite Steam Train, head to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands where you can book a return journey to Mallaig. Tickets can be booked in advance through the Jacobite Steam Train website and we strongly suggest you do this to avoid disappointment in the summer when demand is high. You should also keep an eye out for the treats trolley – you might be lucky enough to acquire some magic frogs or Bertie Botts every flavour beans!

The train takes passengers on a scenic 84-mile journey through stunning landscapes. It will take you through Glenfinnan, over the viaduct and then onto Arisaig and Mallaig. Make sure it’s at the top of your itinerary when visiting the west coast.
