What is Melrose known for?

Melrose is best known for the impressive ruins of Melrose Abbey, one of Scotland's most important medieval landmarks and the reported burial place of the heart of Robert the Bruce. The town also sits at the foot of the Eildon Hills, a distinctive trio of peaks that are popular with walkers and offer far-reaching views across the Borders. 

The River Tweed runs through the area and attracts anglers from across the UK, while the surrounding countryside provides opportunities for walking, cycling and exploring historic sites linked to Scotland's Roman and medieval past. Melrose is also home to the annual Melrose Sevens, the world's oldest rugby sevens tournament, which has been held in the town since 1883.

"My top tip for anyone staying in Melrose is to head up the Eildon Hills early in the day. The walk starts right from the edge of town, and the views across the Tweed Valley and wider Scottish Borders are well worth the climb. Afterwards, it's easy to spend a few hours exploring Melrose Abbey and the independent cafés and shops in the town centre."
