Melrose is a borders town on the banks of the River Tweed and our Melrose cottages are the prefect base for exploring it. Built on the former site of an old monastery and, later, a Cistercian abbey, nowadays, Melrose is an exciting market town. Steeped in history and packed with charm, its streets are full of quaint cafés and boutique restaurants. Just north of the border with England, it is within an hour’s drive of Edinburgh and a short distance from the coastal trail with its quaint fishing villages.
One of the most popular attractions is the remnants of Melrose Abbey. The abbey is the final resting place of the heart of Robert the Bruce. The building is a fine example of late 1300’s religious architecture; it was the second Cistercian Monastery on the site. It was an abbey until 1560 when the last monks died after the Protestant Reformation of 1530. Whilst you’re there, keep an eye out for the bizarre yet charming bagpipe-playing pig of Melrose (a sculpture). People travel from far and wide to Melrose to enjoy a varied and interesting list of annual events, that includes the town festival. It combines traditional elements from many of the summer celebrations found across the borderlands. The show is enriched with highlights such as common riding (a boundary marking custom on horseback), the crowning of a festival queen, fun sports and a bit of fancy dress for good measure.
