Described as the ‘Gateway to the Galloway Hills’, Newton Stewart sits on the River Cree as it flows into the Solway Firth. The choice of activities here is endless, from trekking the trails through the gigantic Galloway Hills and Forest Park to climbing to Merrick’s impressive peak at 843 metres high. There is a very good choice of adventure centres where you can learn and enjoy some kayaking and water skiing. The tranquil lochs are perfect for fishing or for inspiration to paint and sketch. Newton Stewart is a thriving centre of activity with activity centres for bowling, golf courses and interesting shopping. The town also hosts a museum and a cinema.
