Mar Lodge is a charming, secluded cottage, hidden away in the 300 acre Knockespoch Estate with superb uninterrupted views over the Aberdeenshire countryside to the prominent peak of the Tap o' Noth, site of the second highest hill fort in Scotland. The cottage has been renovated from a traditional Victorian dwelling to provide wonderfully spacious holiday accommodation, which is both comfortable and stylish. The living room, with its high ceiling, is a spectacular and bright room and yet with its wood burning stove, comfy sofas and delightful furnishings, is a cosy setting to enjoy a relaxing evening. The kitchen is fully equipped and ideal for informal dining while enjoying the views, whilst the bedroom with its king sized bed and open fire is truly a haven for a peaceful night's sleep. The sun porch enables guests to enjoy the views on chillier days and also to spot the extensive wildlife, which includes many varieties of bird, red squirrels and both roe and red deer. Outside the cottage there is only peaceful seclusion, bird song and the rustle of leaves in the trees; guests can choose to wander the lovely walks within the estate or venture further afield.

This area of Aberdeenshire is steeped in history, with Pictish standing stones, one of which is at the front door of the mansion nearby, and the castle trail which includes 17 of Aberdeenshire’s famous castles; there are also battlefields, ruins and ancient monuments to be explored. The Lecht ski centre is less than 45 minutes drive and offers 18 pisted runs in winter and fun and fast downhill mountain biking in summer. However, for those wishing to take it a little easier there is plenty of opportunity for the fisherman to enjoy a peaceful cast or golfers to tee off; alternatively, perhaps a trip to the distilleries of Speyside to do a spot of whisky tasting. Whether it's walking, biking, touring or merely sitting and taking in the view, it can all be enjoyed in one of the prettiest areas of Scotland.

Sun porch, hall, large sitting room with double height ceiling and wood burning stove, bedroom with king size bed and open fire, kitchen/diner, bathroom with shower attachment over bath, WC and WHB.

    Mar Lodge reviews
Mar Lodge is a lovely cottage with exceptional views and amazing wildlife. The cottage has everything you need for a comfortable stay and the owner's added little touches make it all the more special. Whether it's a relaxing break away from the madding crowd or a base for exploring the wonderful countryside nearby Mar Lodge is the place to go. The cottage is almost a mile into the forest via a dirt track but the bumpy journey is worth it with the reward of feeling in total isolation and breath taking vistas.
    Mrs Hale - August 2018
House was spotless and well equipped. Setting was brilliant. Wildlife kept us and the dog entertained. Not difficult to find due to excellent directions.
    Mr Moran - July 2018
This property suited our every need. A perfect location. Apart from food we did not need to bring a thing. Have recommended it to as many people as we can.
    Mr Holland - July 2018
The Lodge is very well equipped it is beautifully decorated and maintained to a very high standard. My husband and I have already booked for 2019 as we have family living nearby. I highly recommend the the lodge.
    Mrs Carroll - July 2018
When my wife and I first saw Mar Lodge the first thing that came to mind was Thomas KinKades painting Rainbows End . So it proved to be - spring watch every day .
    Mr Miller - June 2018
We've been renting holiday homes for well over 30 years now, and this is one of the best, if not the best, we've stayed in. The owners have taken great efforts to ensure that everything you could need is provided. All the furniture and fittings are top quality. There is a great porch area from which to view the frequent wildlife, on the first morning 3 red squirrels put on a display for us! We also saw woodpeckers, hare, deer etc. The views are stunning, and there is true peace and quiet. The owners acted immediately when we had an issue with the WiFi. We are already checking our diary to see when we can book it next year, and of course we are expecting the same Mediterranean weather conditions we enjoyed this year!
    Mrs Morgan - June 2018
Very well presented and well equipped. Warm and comfortable throughout. A peaceful retreat off the beaten track. Excellent on all fronts. Reluctant to leave.
    Mr Mayall - March 2018
We booked Mar Lodge last year for spring time 2018,we were not expecting some of worst and extreme Snowfall to occur during the week leading up to our holiday week and again during our holiday week. The day we were due to travel we were contacted by Mr Rhodes to make us aware that conditions were not good and we would not be able to drive our car to Mar Lodge and he would meet us at the estate entrance and transport our luggage to Mar lodge.During our stay we had walk to and fro to the car approximately a mile every day. It was only on the Wednesday that we were able to drive anywhere locally. During the week we had constant cantact from Mr Rhodes regarding our welfare re offers to take us shopping etc. Mar Lodge is in a superb location and the cottage is exceptional. Overall my partner and I enjoyed the week but were disappointed that conditions prevailed to stop us enjoying Mar Lodge experience fully. We are going book Mar Lodge in the future but it will be in 2019 as it is almost fully booked this not surprised Doug Tough
    Mr Tough - March 2018
This is a beautiful cottage in an idyllic setting and the owners have made every effort to ensure your stay is comfotable. All the appliances are top quality and the cottage is spotless.
    Mrs Brown - February 2018
Trust me - if you don't like this, you don't like life.
    Mr Anderson - January 2018
The charming owner showed me to cottage and explained where everything was. The cottage is spacious and very well equipped. Gorgeous views and warm but the log fires are a bonus. My dog loved the walks and the large garden. I loved my stay and am looking to book a cheeky weekend again soon.
    Miss Summers - January 2018
As before, it had everything we needed plus more. We were snowed in for 2 days, and couldn't get the car out, but the owner and the groundsman were at the end of the phone and offered assistance (which we eventually declined because we were content with being house bound in the snow). Plenty to do around the area. Within a few minutes drive, you are on the distillery route. Beautiful scenery to watch from inside the cottage. Wildlife literally on the doorstep. Couldn't fault it.
    Mrs Wager - December 2017
If you are looking for somewhere quiet and to get away from it all, then this is the place to be. We had an excellent stay at Mar Lodge, could not fault it from it's stunning location, wild life and walks.
    Mr Goddard - November 2017
Can't fault this place , 3rd time we've been and as usual it's perfect for what we need.Having arrived back home we're booked for next year already.
    Mr Cochrane - September 2017
The cottage was outstanding. It had everything you could wish for as a home from home. Unfortunately we had atrocious weather but it didn't stop us from enjoying the scenery and visiting the many castles nearby. We both loved watching the squirrels playing and the many birds feeding on the bird table. My husband loved going out in a morning to fill the feeders up including the one on the tree for the squirrels. We will definitely return.
    Mrs Leeming - September 2017
It was Perfect!!! The House was very comfortable. It was calm and in the middle of nature. Our Dog loves it too. That was a perfect vacation!!
    Mrs Drieschner - June 2017
Totally relaxing place ,would recommend to anyone looking for peace and quiet and getting away from everything, but close enough to civilisation if you want to go out.
    Mr Cochrane - May 2017
Excellent travel directions & owners phoned on journey to check we were happy with them. On first morning the owners checked again to see everything was alright. Immaculate, well equipped cottage with good disabled access. Fires laid with good supply of firewood Plenty of bird seed for the abundant wildlife. Good supply of books, games etc. Homemade flapjacks, marmalade and daffodils a thoughtful welcome. This won't be our last visit, looking forward to next time.
    Mr Morrison - April 2017
Second time to Mar Lodge and again a lovely place to relax and enjoy the area. The Lodge is a homely and well equipped place. We loved it again.
    Mr Hanham - October 2016
Cottage was excellent for our needs and was very welcoming, owners very helpful ,wildlife outside and around Mar Lodge was wonderful we had roe deer, hinds ,fawns and as we were leaving the stags started rutting , lots of small birds etc on the feeding table and of course the red squirrel appeared just as we were leaving, once we got our bearings it's not that much out of the way regarding touring the area, but that suited us fine as we preferred the peace and quiet that the lodge brought. All in all it was a wonderful place
    Mr Cochrane - September 2016
Mar Lodge is a lovely cottage at the edge of the woods, looking northwest over fields and farms to Tap o' Noth, one of Scotland's largest iron-age hill forts. The cottage is very well presented, cosy and warm, and is larger than it looks like from outside. It has all the facilities we wanted and is very well equipped (we thought hard, and the ONLY extra things that we could have asked for is an electric extension cable, and a separate freezer, though the ice-box is a good size.) The bedroom is charming, and the sofa-bed is fine if there are four people staying at the cottage. There is heating throughout the cottage, and the log-burner in the living room can provide extra heat, as does the fire in the bedroom, though you are more likely to use them more for the romance than the warmth. The info pack was very useful, and the owners may be able to send you an electric copy in advance if you ask. Both Asda and Tesco deliver, so you can arrange in advance for a full shop to be delivered to the cottage within a couple of hours of you arriving. We spent a lot of time in the sun porch, big enough for two to sit comfortably, and heated as well, watching the wildlife: cows and sheep in the fields, deer in the woodland, red-squirrels in the garden, and loads of birds, including jays, great tits, coal tits, great spotted woodpeckers, and chaffinches on the feeder. You will probably need a SatNav to find the cottage (at 57.3035N, 2.7700W), as it is about a mile from the main road up a reasonably well-maintained dirt road. There are lots of National Trust for Scotland (NTS) castles around, and NTS membership also currently grants entrance to all English National Trust properties for free. If I was to choose anywhere in the world to get snowed-in at Christmas with the one that I love, it would be Mar Lodge.
    Mr Springate - September 2016
Everything you could want in a secluded cottage with fantastic views. You can't depend upon the Scottish weather but the cottage was perfect.
    Mrs Pitt - July 2016
comfortable and nice cottage with everything you need for a couple of days of holidays.
    Mrs Tardo - July 2016
Everything you could possibly require for the most perfect stay including the wonderful scenery. Got to see red squirrels, lesser spotted woodpeckers, jays and a wide variety of other feathered friends feeding from the bird table. The marmalade and flapjacks left for us were exceptional and much appreciated upon our arrival late Friday evening. Plenty of walks and even though the weather wasn't great the cottage was very cosy and relaxing and we shall return for longer!
    Mr Draper-rickards - July 2016
The fact that we have stayed at Mar Lodge on three separate occasions should tell a story! It is in a quiet, lovely location with access to plenty of walking. The Lodge itself is lovely especially on cooler nights when you can get the wood burner going in the main living area and there is even a fire in the bedroom that has a built around screen for safety There is ample room, but the main living room is particularly spacious for only 2 people. The bedroom is a good size too and it was lovely to wake up in the morning and sit in bed looking out onto countryside, including the bird table which attracted squirrels and a large variety of birds. There is always some home made produce on arrival which is a lovely touch and we will definitely be staying again at some point
    Mrs Grantham - August 2015
We absolutely loved our stay at Mar Lodge. The owners were warm and very welcoming. We loved the homemade flapjacks and marmalade given to us by the owner...delicious! The cottage's seclusion made for a peaceful, relaxing stay. The view is wonderful for watching sunsets. We definitely will be returning to this wonderful cottage.
    Mrs Gill - June 2015
Our 3rd stay at Mar Lodge, and it's now something we look forward to all year. The cottage is extremely comfortable, well equipped and wonderfully peaceful
    Mr Bull - May 2015
