Is Inverness worth visiting?
As the capital of the Highlands, Inverness is one of the best places to stay in northern Scotland. The city combines historic attractions, independent shops, riverside walks and cultural venues with easy access to some of the country's most iconic landscapes, making it an excellent base for a self-catering holiday.
Visitors can explore Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle, stroll along the River Ness and Ness Islands, or discover local history at Culloden Battlefield, Clava Cairns and Fort George. Within the city itself, highlights include the Inverness Castle Experience, Victorian Market, Inverness Cathedral and Eden Court Theatre.
Inverness is a destination that many of our guests return to year after year. Rebekah Conway, who books a holiday in Scotland with us annually, says Inverness is always a highlight of her itinerary. "When planning our city-hopping holiday for 2026, Inverness automatically made it onto our list. We love the city, and one of our favourite things to do is visit Leakey's Bookshop to find a unique holiday read. This year, we're looking forward to exploring the Victorian Market and making our usual stop at Perk Coffee for a takeaway coffee and vegan doughnut. Even when we're not staying in Inverness, we always plan a detour for our yearly Perk fix."
Whether you're planning outdoor adventures, sightseeing or a relaxed Highland escape, staying in a holiday cottage in Inverness puts many of the region's top attractions within easy reach.
