The converted coaching inn, set in the Cairngorms national park, is the perfect place for a family getaway all within its own private three-acre grounds.

This traditional stone cottage, sleeping eight guests and two dogs across four bedrooms, has been carefully renovated to retain its original charm, giving a real sense of timelessness. Set just outside the little village of Boat of Garten, a quiet and beautifully rural part of Scotland, it is perfect for families, couples or group of friends who want to explore majestic mountains, forest paths, rivers, lochs, wildlife hotspots and tackle some of the 55 Munros – just make sure you pack the walking boots!

 

This cottage is cosy, welcoming and homely, with consideration given to the practical requirements of an active, outdoor holiday. The Jack-and-Jill bathroom is accessible from the outside; there is a storage shed for bikes, skis and other outdoor equipment; and the utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer has plenty of drying space for wet clothes after a day on the hills.

 

Pastel walls are punctuated with colourful artwork throughout, whilst wooden floors, the exposed stone fireplace and bright textiles in the open-plan living space are complemented by large windows allowing panoramic views of the garden and light to flood in. Kick off boots in the porch to relax on the comfortable sofas, hot chocolate in hand and toes warming in front of the roaring wood burner, before gathering together at the dining table for a delicious, home-cooked meal.

 

The generous king-size bedroom and the Jack-and-Jill shower room are on the ground floor, whilst upstairs, the traditional, eaved bedrooms are serene in creams and pastel tones, giving a sense of space and light, perfect for a restful night’s sleep. The bathroom retains the same gentle character, perfect for a long soak after a long, active day. The variety of room make-ups cater for a range of parties, with the extra single bed and cot bed in two of the double bedrooms excellent for families.

 

Children and dogs can spend many, happy hours exploring the pretty, fenced garden, scattered with mature trees and established flower beds. In addition to the 2-acre fields there is a heated thatched hut for six people and a BBQ, perfect for al fresco dining at any time of the day or night. There is a secluded patio which is the ideal spot if you wish to hire a hot tub to make your stay extra special, ending the day in bubbles under the stars. There is ample private parking and an electric vehicle charging point, too.

Please note there is a refundable £250 security deposit for this property payable closer to the start of your holiday.

Boat of Garten (1 mile) is a peaceful village lying adjacent to the mighty River Spey, with a pub and village shop. Take the Strathspey Railway Steam Train to Aviemore (7 miles) to visit the surrounding towering mountains, sparkling lochs and dense forests making it a popular year-round destination for a huge range of summer and winter activities. Visit Loch Garten (3.5 miles) for walks in beautiful forests and the chance to see famous ospreys. Or, with 12 distilleries within 30 miles, why not hop on to the famous Malt Whisky Trail? Golfers will love playing 18 holes or a game of tennis at the Boat of Garten Golf and Tennis Club (1 mile), with further courses at Abernethy Golf Club (5 miles) and Grantown on Spey Golf Club (8 miles), whilst avid skiers are close to the Cairngorm Mountain (15 miles) and Lecht Ski Centre (27 miles). Discover miles of sandy beaches at Findhorn (35 miles) and Nairn (31 miles) on the Moray Coast, and nature enthusiasts may even spot dolphins and seals. The small town of Grantown-on-Spey (8 miles) offers boutique shops, cafes, pubs, restaurants and takeaways, and Inverness (31 miles) is a thriving city offering shopping, culture, eating and drinking. Loch Morlich (11 miles) offers a range of water sports; Loch Insh (16 miles) has paddleboarding, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, and canoeing down the beautiful River Spey; or tackle the high ropes at Treezone Aviemore (8 miles). There is a plethora of outdoor activities for all the family at Alvie Estate (12 miles) too, with zip wires, clay pigeon shooting, archery, horse riding, walking, fishing and bird-watching, whilst Full On Adventure (8 miles) offers river tubing, white-water rafting, gorge walking and canyoning.

Lovely, comfortable house and very well equipped. Excellent base for exploring the beautiful surrounding area. It is situated on a main road, but the noise is minimal.

Great place to stay, only a 10 minute drive from Avimore where there is plenty to do. views are amazing from cottage and there is plenty of space for children and dog to play in the garden. We would happily stay here again!

A pretty cottage which is very well equipped. There is plenty of outside space and access to further woodland through the land at the rear of the property. It is a lovely 15 minute walk to Boat of Garten on footpaths. The owners were very helpful and responded promptly to emails. I would happily recommend to friends and family.
